Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm McGroovey:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm medson:

Hey Nate and everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm TomDash:

Off to a good start, ears getting singed!
  3:12pm clarke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm chris_in_space:

I smell it burning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Nate K.:

Hey, Tom. Can't lose w/ G.A.O.B.!
  3:13pm clarke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm TomDash:

  3:16pm annette:

got a freezer load of broiled chicken thighs. some with tomato-ye sauce. the rest with only lawrys seasoning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm rx scabin:

Speaking of food, chili is simmering, asparagus ready for sauteing, Cajun coleslaw slawed, corn tortilla quesadilla waiting patiently. Also, Martini is being enjoyed now. The sun is shining until the winter storm warning takes effect at 5:00 p.m..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Nate K.:

Hey, Pauly. Nice to be rocking w/ the sun out! Even if it is cloudy today.
  3:17pm clarke:

nice annette!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Handy Haversack:

Might just be all the smoke, Nate!
  3:18pm clarke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm TomDash:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm efd:

Hiya Nate, nice to hear you this afternoon! And good afternoon to all Burners and Downers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm rx scabin:

  3:21pm clarke:

GOOD stress-cooking, rx!

nate: the sun is streaming down in new orleans, so this is reeeeeaaaal niiiice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Handy Haversack:

Pretty good, clarke! Jalapeno hash and huevos mexicana. Three jalapenos led to a nice spiciness level.

efd! Great to finally get a chance to chat at the Eyelids show. Last night was a really great time for us. Very special night with lots of good folx around!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm karlward:

rx scabin: we had a Bloody Mary watch that turned into a warning, and then passed through our area, deliciously
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Handy Haversack:

Hell of a set, Nate!
  3:22pm clarke:

gr8 as always, Handy -- i am super-jealous of that show, as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm efd:

@Handy yes, great to finally meet in person and what a great night of music! Eyelids are one of the best bands out there right now.
  3:24pm clarke:

agree evan - the eyelids seemed to go thru a quiet period, and then powered it up during the pandemic, which might be counter-intuitive, but much enjoyable.
  3:24pm annette:

@rx. breaded asparagus topped w bruschetta and feta. you got a free pass to heaven
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm mariano:

Hey there, clarke, Handy, efd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Frank In Queens:

Yeah, last night was a great show. Lots of fun and good company!
  3:26pm annette:

@clarke. glad you ducked those tornados
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Nate K.:

@Clarke, glad to hear it!
  3:28pm clarke:

days don't get much nicer, here, eh, Mariano??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm pollypinocle:

@Handy I looked for FMU tees to see if I could find you! But also was doing a lot of catching up with old friends. Next time, I hope!
  3:28pm clarke:

as for the 'nado -- near miss. again, luckily.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm efd:

@polly How did I miss you?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm mariano:

Beautiful day, clarke.
Avatar 3:29pm John L:

Going through boxes of cds, for a Spring cleaning, and at the bottom of a crate full of Mojo, Uncut and Wire samplers was this Dadamah cd. Not purging that one!
  3:29pm clarke:

u ain't kiddin'!!
  3:30pm clarke:

i wouldn't purge the Mojo's either - i am regretting giving mine away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm pollypinocle:

@efd yeah, right? I later saw you standing up front .. sorry we missed each other!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm ACmonicAC:

Hey there, Nate! LOOOOOOVE what I’m hearing!

Hi Medson, yo Handy. Hi to all you friends!
  3:31pm SeanG:

fuzzy warbles? is that XTC related
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Handy Haversack:

Next time, polly!

Yeah, K8 and I were just buoyant from that show. And from getting to chat with them after the show, too. Absolute great night.

But after shows two nights in a row, not sure we're gonna make Baby Shakes tonight. I am hearing that we'll be sticking close to home ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Nate K.:

@AC, thanks! Glad to hear it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Frank In Queens:

@Handy, but remember, you're both young and vital!
  3:33pm clarke:

"buoyant" "row" - always the nautical allusions, handy.
Avatar 3:33pm John L:

clarke: Some are just samplers of new releases, but I'm keeping most of the artist tribute and theme cds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Handy Haversack:

Hey hey, ACmonicAC!

Frank, that's what I said! But reasonable people can differ. Oh, I reached out through your FMU profile. K8 wants to follow up with youse about booking, and we both want to follow up about further activities for the young and vibrant set we are accustomed to running with!

Anchors aweigh, clarke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm medson:

This Witches Broom album is so good.
  3:35pm clarke:

yes, i jettisoned all my cd's - am considering the same for (not pre-recorded) cassettes. input ya'll??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Nate K.:

@SeanG, might be a reference, but they're a Brooklyn label.
  3:35pm clarke:

why so many cuss words handy??
Avatar 3:35pm βrian:

I'm embarrassed to say I was an adult before I realized it wasn't "anchors away."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Nate K.:

@Medson, agree. Great contemporary garage.
  3:36pm SeanG:

ah cool, thanks Nate
  3:36pm clarke:

i happen to think it IS anchors away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm rx scabin:

@annette asparagus! I eat it every day in the spring. My favorite way is sauteed in olive oil with a little garlic, Parmesan cheese, and good bread.
Avatar 3:37pm βrian:

That might be appropriate for a hot-air balloon.
  3:37pm clarke:

stress-free good bread.
Avatar 3:38pm βrian:

Add coarse black pepper and deglaze with lemon juice, I say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm TomDash:

Rockin' Saturday Jams!!! love it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm rx scabin:

@clarke the scabins keep everything -- just in case they do a biography of one of us. Our children can throw it away or sell it. Also, they could build us a museum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm chris_in_space:

Crystalized Movements—slayin'
  3:41pm clarke:

i have hundreds of mixtapes i made until i started doing cd's of them. they may be dead weight, but hard to let go of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm rx scabin:

How is each one better than the other?
  3:42pm annette:

jettisent so many cds to my fav radio station. will pleasure so many ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Frank In Queens:

@handy, check your email.
  3:42pm clarke:

somewhere in there is a cassette i made as a kid singing along with Lightnin' Strikes by Lou Christie!!!! along with some made-up commercials and such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm chris_in_space:

Re: doing shows in the afternoon vs. night slots, I gotta say, @TomDash, your Friday mornings have become a highlight of my weekly aural calendar. What a way to kick off Fridays!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm efd:

@clarke I still have a couple of racks of cassette mixes I made in the '80s and '90s. No cassette player currently, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm rx scabin:

@clarke .KEEP it.
  3:44pm clarke:

yeah - what are we gonna do??
Avatar 3:44pm John L:

clarke: I was recently in the home of someone who had passed away and they were a hoarder. Made me want to start getting rid of some of my stuff. Cds are at the top of the list. I'm sure I'll end up keeping more than I should. But I have worked in record stores, and owned one, and have so many promos, And do I need that Small Factory cd for that one song? I'll probably give it another listen and decide, um, maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm TomDash:

thanks @chris_in_space!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm McGroovey:

I really need to get more Crystalized Movements rekkids.
  3:45pm clarke:

i hear u, John L. i recently found a friend to 'curate' my (huge) record collection -- it was honestly very freeing (and i can visit and check out/in stuff at will).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm rx scabin:

Keep. Even the small joy you or others have in remembering is recompense (Handy word).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm chris_in_space:

@McGroovey my thoughts precisely
  3:46pm clarke:

and, sync - i was listening to Small Factory the other day (a box of my cd's did not get away)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Handy Haversack:

We are totally out of shelf space. Things are beginning to LOOM up in here.
  3:47pm clarke:

"jettison" - handy word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm rx scabin:

That said, do not keep trash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm listener 126464:

The floor is one big shelf.
  3:48pm clarke:

well, moving is a LOT easier without the albums to deal with!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm rx scabin:

@listener etc. it is our bookshelf.
  3:48pm annette:

less is more. just support the radio we dumped on.
  3:48pm clarke:

and, yes: i started a "new" record collection soon after the main collection left, ha ha ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm listener 126464:

Spent the last couple hours cleaning the shelf.
  3:50pm clarke:

rx - are you saying you pile books laterally from the floor up - euro style?
  3:51pm clarke:

i dig that, if so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm TomDash:

that Sic Alps sounded like Skip Spence! On that note, hopping off the board and heading to work soon. Great saturday hang music Nate...play something that will go with chicken (the same question I'll be posed at the shop this eve!)
Avatar 3:52pm Fredericks:

Clarke, my only cassette advice is, generally speaking, prerecorded ones don't hold up as well as decent quality blanks.
  3:52pm clarke:

don't chicken out!! (or: DO!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm rx scabin:

@clarke there is no alternative. Glad to hear that I can tell people that it is "European."
Avatar 3:53pm John L:

I also have years of back issues of Shindig, Uncut, Mojo. Probably keep some of the Shindigs, as well as Popwatch, Chemical Imbalance and Your Flesh, though. Selling and donating books and dvds/blu-rays. I just want to be able to not have things piled on top of each other. When everything is more streamlined I'll decide how much further I need to go.
  3:53pm clarke:

i don't have ANY pre-recorded cassettes. none. these are all (mostly maxell) made by me and folks i traded or gave me.
  3:54pm clarke:

you have PopWatch? John did u live in boston? or know lesley gaffney??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Will the Sound Guy:

Hi Nate K and all!!!
  3:55pm clarke:

and, i forgot that i DO have a few Thumper Jones cassettes from truck-stops on the road.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm rx scabin:

@Nate K you are not filling in; you brought your own slot.
Avatar 3:56pm John L:

Nope. I live in the NY Hudson Valley. But I'm thinking I bought many of those mags at a NYC store called See/Hear.
  3:57pm clarke:

ahhhh See/Hear - ted gottfried!!
  3:57pm clarke:

was a great store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm mariano:

Ted got fried? Good for him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Nate K.:

Hey, Will. Great to see you on the board.
  3:58pm clarke:

brother's M!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Nate K.:

@JohnL Can't say I was a regular shopper, but See/Hear was legendary.
  3:59pm clarke:

i might have to go get some Brother's in a bit! all this chikken talk.
  4:00pm clarke:

i do have to go get the Acetone organ out of my car before it gets too hot (or stolen). brb.
Avatar 4:01pm John L:

See/Hear was great! But I was just reminded that when I worked at a record store, in the 90's, we sold those magazines, so got some of them from there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Handy Haversack:

Some (especially those who live with me in a four-room railroad apartment with four other mammals) might say I have too many hobbies. And three of them (books and table-top games) pretty definitely involve collecting physical objects. And canoeing and softball come with awkward gear as well. So ... things fill up. I need to do a games and books purge, get some cash for them, and reset the space reserves until they fill up again.
Avatar 4:08pm Creature Boy:

@ nate k , B0TH 0utsiders? 🐸

Avatar 4:11pm Creature Boy:

As in both the American & European Outsiders bands?
  4:12pm clarke:

handy - i recently saw a table-top bowling pin game that was seemingly intact!! due to moving, i did not act.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm karlward:

Hey this from Killed by Mardi Gras isn’t it?
  4:13pm clarke:

(the game where you swing the 'bowling ball' around on a derrick).
  4:15pm clarke:

it may have been on that comp, karlward, but the version is from the normals album.
  4:16pm clarke:

i think the comp version may have been a different mix??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Handy Haversack:

Nice, clarke. I mean more like table-top RPGs (D&D-like stuff). Board games I have declared a full moratorium on. They take up so much room, and it's not like we've been having many game nights these past two years ...

But that bowling game would be hard to resist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Nate K.:

@Karl, yes, I think this was the Normals song I chose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm karlward:

Love that comp!
  4:17pm clarke:

it was pretty sweet because one rarely sees old games that are a full-set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Nate K.:

Thanks, @Karl. I'm proud of that one!
  4:21pm clarke:

the Smirk EP (i think) is better than their album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm common:

This is a fine guitar sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Nate K.:

@Clarke, I agree. Or at least, I prefer it a but more.
  4:22pm clarke:

yes - i still like the album. but...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm chresti:

Pop Top sounded like "crap ass" on my little bluetooth speaker.
Avatar 4:25pm John L:

Toy Love! If we were on a Zoom call you would see I was wearing my Chris Knox t-shirt to work today.
  4:27pm clarke:

cool. and me in my Stax shirt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm rx scabin:

This seems nice.
Avatar 4:29pm John L:

And Knox also did cover art for a Popwatch and Forced Exposure magazines.
  4:30pm clarke:

truth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Handy Haversack:

Now clarke has me checking to see how much some of my board games might sell for ...
  4:31pm clarke:

am sure they are in pristine condition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm The Spoony:

  4:33pm clarke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm rx scabin:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm rx scabin:

@Nate K how did we get here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Nate K.:

@RX It's the beauty of freeform!
  4:37pm clarke:

there was a (fairly corporate) record store in baton rouge called New Generation, 70's-80's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Handy Haversack:

This is how it gets burned the hell down!

Hey Nate K. and listeners!
Hey Will the Sound Guzy!
Hey Handy, McGroovey - great to see you last night at Eyelids.
EFD - sorry I didn't get a chance to re-introduce myself and have a chat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm rx scabin:

I hope to see you soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Handy Haversack:

Mike! Great to see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Spinning Giant:

  5:01pm clarke:

agree, nate - warren is where it's AT!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Handy Haversack:

Hell yeah Nate! We were there Thu. What a show.
  5:01pm clarke:

you went to that TOO!!! grrr...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Handy Haversack:

We were really transfixed. One great thing about seeing Nick Cave, in any formation, is that you know that at least one person in the crowd is having the best night of their life.

I had also never been to Kings Theater. It's gorgeous.

I found this picture of Warren Ellis. It's from a couple of years ago but is still essentially accurate:

  5:04pm kate:

hey nate! what were the montreal bands you mentioned just now? i missed them! great show!!
  5:04pm clarke:

he's a scary lookin' dude - but boy could he play: guitar, viola, bass, piano, keys, violin, etc.
  5:06pm clarke:

when Dirty Three played in nola (at mermaid lounge, long ago) i showed warren around the warehouse district. great fun, that.
  5:07pm Ochre Ogre:

Hi Nate, The British folk group Trees does a great version of Sally Free and Easy!
  5:07pm Andres:

When I hear skeleton crew I think Jason and the Argonauts (1963). Fearsome!
  5:08pm clarke:

great flick!!
  5:09pm clarke:

kendra!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Nate K.:

@Ochre I adore that version!
  5:10pm Ochre Ogre:

Andres- Ha good one, Harryhausen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Handy Haversack:

A friend of mine went to see Harryhausen speak and actually got to hold one of the skeletons!

Dang, this set is already burning so hot there won't be any air left!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm LesleyK:

Ooh. Opal. One of my faves!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm LesleyK:

Hi Nate!
  5:12pm clarke:

Avatar 5:13pm Fredericks:

Ochre Ogre: I listened to that Trees' song twice this morning.
5:14pm tom tom the pipers son:

dion sounding like the byrds even before the sounded like the byrds by a little
  5:15pm Ochre Ogre:

Nate- So beautiful, discovered them by Irwin I think, and was instantly hooked!
Avatar 5:17pm Fredericks:

I heard them on an archived Shrunken Planet then listened again.
  5:18pm clarke:

i miss the Shrunken Planet on sat morn...sigh.
  5:20pm Ochre Ogre:

Fredericks- Wild! Unfortunately they only released 2 LP's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Nate K.:

@Leslie, that Opal collection is my number-one want!
Avatar 5:22pm elkeno:

  5:23pm Ochre Ogre:

-Studio albums-
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Nate K.:

Love that band so much. I'd fly to Canada to see a reunion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm TomDash:

I almost feel like we're veering towards City Rock? Maybe not...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Nate K.:

@Tom, Arthur Russell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm LesleyK:

Nate, I used to have the Opal stuff on cassette..back in college. Maybe I still do. love it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm TomDash:

nope, Deadly Snakes felt like it was veering towards it in odd way (says this guy who still doesn't really know what City Rock is)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Nate K.:

That Early Recordings comp is rare. The CD is like $60.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Ryansterlingvirtue:

major feels from this song Nate. How was the concert?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Nate K.:

@Tom. Ha! Got it. Was gonna say, Arthur Russell is pretty eclectic, but I don't think he does City.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Handy Haversack:

Ahh, this Nick Cave. The version on Live Seeds is also great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Nate K.:

@Ryan, really amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Ryansterlingvirtue:

only from the two albums right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Ryansterlingvirtue:

I would go just to watch warren go nuts on the violin. I saw grindermen a couple times. Next level experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Gaylord Fields:

Hiya, Nate! This show has been just the jumper cable to get the motor purring! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Nate K.:

Thanks, Gaylord! Much appreciated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Handy Haversack:

My friend whom we went with on Thu. also went back on Fri. They're in Manhattan the next two nights -- anyone who can swing it should go!

Ryan, they played a couple of Bad Seeds songs, a PJ Harvey cover, etc. Not just the two albums. It was transfixingly great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Ryansterlingvirtue:

outstanding show today. always good to have you back on the air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Ryansterlingvirtue:

oh wow! I didn't hear about the bad seeds stuff! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Handy Haversack:

Ryan, quoting myself from upthread, but:
