was that the Nintenfo Wii menu music as Olivia’s outro? That was such a lovely segue into Mark’s opening

Was disappointed we didn't get a performance from you last night Mark! ;)
  6:02pm Glistener MW:

Very looking forward to tonight’s conversation, Mark! as a longtime bandcamp user/consumer/lover, I’ve been so
unjazzed by that acquisition news.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:03pm DanFA:

Mark didn't perform with the Hoof N Mouth because it was also being streamed on toxic YouTube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm D Rok:

Glistener MW: I think that was Olivia's outro. I couldn't quite place it, but I'm pretty sure it's from an SNES game. One I've definitely played.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Handy Haversack:

I have this childish desire and fantasy that Mark will tell us that everything is going to be OK, Bandcamp-wise. But that's not how things go, I know.
  6:03pm Glistener MW:

as Erin said - ditto, Mark! your Talking Heads cover last year was a highlight

Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Bimbus Bambus:

Not expecting any reassurance either, but I think as long as Bandcamp honors their Bandcamp Fridays hopefully that will still be good for artists?
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Handy Haversack:

DanFA, I don't think we're likely to run out of tech-capitalist nightmare scenarios to discuss any time soon. Maybe not till the lights go out for good.

Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Handy Haversack:

There are so many ways they could start monetizing engagement and offering "freemium" models perfected for massive amounts of micropurchases, though, Bimbus Bambus --the strategies of video-game companies. So ... well, yeah, not optimistic.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Webhamster Henry:

On one hand, there may be more services developed for Bandcamp artists and customers, on the other hand, I'd expect the usual inter-company data buying and selling to commence.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Long ago now Techtonic (first?) among others have made me realize that what is required is a Bill of Digital Rights for the 'new' occupied territory of CyberSpace - where we've all been living for some time now. A prerequisite for this would be a Revolution deriving from the Citizen's outrage over their lack / loss of Rights here. Which could only derive from a general Awareness that this is so...
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Bimbus Bambus:

Yeah I can imagine a kind of subscription-based thing where you need to be a "member" to even have access to Bandcamp Fridays...

Avatar 🤖 6:12pm MarciB:

@Tim from Washington - Substack is a platform for both paid and free newsletters. But there are issues with it.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Will the Sound Guy:

Hi Mark and all!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm B R M:

My kids play FORTNITE and it is a very robust console game (PS 4/5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch)... it has huge financial upside because it has its own in game currency - V-BUCKS- that cost actual cash, and are required not to play, but to acquire different characters and traits, none of which enhance how you perform in the game, all of which are purely cosmetic. My son, instead of collecting physical action figures, collects Fortnite characters (called "skins"). The game does live events, including live music concerts, in game, which were quite interesting.

The thing to talk about, for me as a dad with boys in this culture, is the way in which YouTube culture supports interest in the game through game-funded "creators" who stream the games and generate perpetual interest in the game by creating rumors, theories about the game, live playing the game online with commentary, etc. These videos are truly the apex of ADVERTISING, as it is generated by content creators and appears to be authentic, and that relationship drives the "culture" of Epic Games.

My observations as a dad 🤷‍♂️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Mark Hurst:

@Erin in TO thanks - I was sorry to miss it - unfortunately I had a scheduling issue - but I very much hope I can make it to the next one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...not that Marx becomes irrelevant in CyberSpace - on the contrary, the Tech Monopolies make him more relevant than perhaps he's ever been.
However, Aldous Huxley's lessons about Technocracy become ever more relevant. That is - they've made us like it here - a Territory they've stolen from us absolutely wholesale (the Internet & AI - paid for by Taxpayers originally in fact - were going to Decentralize & Democratize everything...)
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Handy Haversack:

Also, if it's not to presumptuous, I do think the slogan for Techtonic as long as the 2022 badges last might need to be

WE ARE THE ROBOTS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Mark Hurst:

@BRM good observations, thanks

I just want to add on this point Damon is making about catalogue vs new releases which is true, but we often discount YouTube as a music delivery system for younger listeners... and there, relatively new release numbers DWARF Spotify/ Apple Music numbers. Spotify has 406 Million users, but YouTube is 2 Billion.

@coelacanth: even more irksomely, Bandcamp were doing fine / quite in the black for the better part of the past decade or more. So they didn't need a financial infusion, per se, as much as this new deal potentially just being a cashout. (Again though, I love the site and hope it stays fairly unchanged for artists and their royalties, but the cynic in me can't imagine that happening. :/ )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm The Oscar:

I used to work in one of the Harvard record stores Damon frequents (and can attest to his character!). About 10 years ago the store got a new landlord who hiked the rent. We moved down the road; the spot was vacant for a year, and is now a bong shop. Happy ending: the shop is still open in its new location!
