Long ago now Techtonic (first?) among others have made me realize that what is required is a Bill of Digital Rights for the 'new' occupied territory of CyberSpace - where we've all been living for some time now. A prerequisite for this would be a Revolution deriving from the Citizen's outrage over their lack / loss of Rights here. Which could only derive from a general Awareness that this is so...

Hi Mark and all!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
B R M:

My kids play FORTNITE and it is a very robust console game (PS 4/5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch)... it has huge financial upside because it has its own in game currency - V-BUCKS- that cost actual cash, and are required not to play, but to acquire different characters and traits, none of which enhance how you perform in the game, all of which are purely cosmetic. My son, instead of collecting physical action figures, collects Fortnite characters (called "skins"). The game does live events, including live music concerts, in game, which were quite interesting.

The thing to talk about, for me as a dad with boys in this culture, is the way in which YouTube culture supports interest in the game through game-funded "creators" who stream the games and generate perpetual interest in the game by creating rumors, theories about the game, live playing the game online with commentary, etc. These videos are truly the apex of ADVERTISING, as it is generated by content creators and appears to be authentic, and that relationship drives the "culture" of Epic Games.

My observations as a dad 🤷‍♂️

Another way to interpret Galaxie 500's experience with Spotify is that the algorithm also rewards decades-old innovators whose music anticipated today's trend, isn't it?

Not to defend Spotify's business model, of course.

W FM(radio) + Upsala College. W MFU << very frequent typo for WFMU. It used to be WGXC , and then Ken discovered that WMFU was available, and it was actually pretty cheap to change the call letters!

I just want to add on this point Damon is making about catalogue vs new releases which is true, but we often discount YouTube as a music delivery system for younger listeners... and there, relatively new release numbers DWARF Spotify/ Apple Music numbers. Spotify has 406 Million users, but YouTube is 2 Billion.

@coelacanth: even more irksomely, Bandcamp were doing fine / quite in the black for the better part of the past decade or more. So they didn't need a financial infusion, per se, as much as this new deal potentially just being a cashout. (Again though, I love the site and hope it stays fairly unchanged for artists and their royalties, but the cynic in me can't imagine that happening. :/ )

I used to work in one of the Harvard record stores Damon frequents (and can attest to his character!). About 10 years ago the store got a new landlord who hiked the rent. We moved down the road; the spot was vacant for a year, and is now a bong shop. Happy ending: the shop is still open in its new location!

Be afraid. No shitting around. He is the true dark lord of borderline and or fully blown on the spectrum evil pricks of our reality.

His personal grudge that destroyed Gawker et al. was fair warning. This year he has deep political plans. And going forward unless a just god does something to minimize his threat.

Just saying. There’s evil and there’s truly malignant Peter
