A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Attack Of The Comps: Seattle Syndrome (etc.)
The title "Seattle Syndrome" refers to the predicament Seattle based bands found themselves in during the late seventies and early eighties, described by Neil Hubbard as the fact that "a Seattle band could produce stunning renditions of highly original tunes, to little or no support. You could do anything here, good or bad, and nobody would care."

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Kat in Chicago:

Everyone else who I've heard play Lucier this week seemed to be going out of their way not to play this one. I'm glad you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Pauly! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Rich in Washington:

I went out of my way to not listen to many other DJs this week so I wouldn't feel like I was being redundant. Kinda solipsistic, I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Rich in Washington:

I'm feeding the delayed webstream back into itself.
  🎸 8:07pm Agent Spacegirl:

Congrats Rich! <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Mr Fab:

Yeah, cool remixing! Kitten Sparkles just played the orig version straight thru.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Rich in Washington:

Thank you, Agent Spacegirl! Glad to see you here!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Kat in Chicago:

I missed Kitten this week :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Rich in Washington:

I missed Kitten too! Most shows after 2 or so my time are difficult to listen to because of my changing work place schedule.
Avatar 8:11pm ironybread:

I am rooming in a sit. I am sooming in a rit. Soom am ritting on an eye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Mr Fab:

That's interesting Kat @8:04, as this is the only piece of his that I'm really familiar with. Maybe it's the only piece of his that MOST people are familiar with, so they wanted to play his "deep cuts," not his "hit."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Zipperhead7:

Ah, the metafrequeny is kicking in. This is very nitrous-sounding
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Kat in Chicago:

I have Extended Voices on less-than-pristine vinyl :) and some recent Lucier recordings on digital. Haven't decided what to play of his on my Monday show - it's supposed to be a New Music Monday but I can't ignore his passing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Rich in Washington:

Oh wow! I have to hear that!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Zipperhead7:

This is all new to me. I feel like tiny cartoon nebbishes are racing around my bloodstream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Mr Fab:

Kat, one definition of avant/experimental is "New Music," so there ya go.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm ultradamno:

Some additional notes on The Urinals family tree I neglected last week that may or may not be of interest, after 100 Flowers drummer Kevin Barrett goes on to God & The State, Project 197 and Radwaste (as does bassist Talley-Jones) meanwhile Kjehl Johansen and Talley-Jones, who had both been in Danny & The Doorknobs would take a couple of other of those guys, join up with Vitus Mataré of The Last and formed Trotsky Icepick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Rich in Washington:

if you can find the version of OHM: The Early Gurus Of Electronic Music that has the accompanying DVD, you can watch Lucier controlling musical instruments with his brainwaves.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Kat in Chicago:

Haha, Mr. Fab, you are correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Rich in Washington:

I'm gonna crash my computer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Mr Fab:

Since you missed Kitten, allow me to cut-n-paste my comment:

Listening to "I Am Sitting In A Room" again had me thinking about how amazing those early tape pieces were. Even tho we've had decades of sound collage since, and digital tools make it so much easier to make concrete-type stuff, those old cut-n-splice tape works like early S Reich, "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me," this one, are just so astonishing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Rich in Washington:

The first time I heard I Am Sitting In A Room, I was a teenager and it blew my mind. Now I actually one of the hosts of the very show I first heard it on after the founding host Richard Francis passed away in 2009.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Kat in Chicago:

Very cool, Rich! I haven't known about Lucier for all that long, really. I might have heard him first on Fabio's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Rich in Washington:

Fabio's show is fantastic. I rarely ever miss it - work interruptions notwithstanding.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Kat in Chicago:

I was exposed to Steve Reich's tape chopping at an early age though, randomly checked this out of my college library www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Rich in Washington:

It's Gonna Rain is so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Rich in Washington:

I made this mix of Music on a Long Thin Wire many years ago for another show but I can't remember what exactly.
  🎸 8:32pm Agent Spacegirl:

So Pretty
Avatar 8:33pm TDK60:

Hi RiW: I'm in a room too. Good to see various WFMU shows playing Lucier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Rich in Washington:

I wish there were a horizontal way to playlist stuff people could see the overlap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Rich in Washington:

Hi TDK60! Glad you could listen from your room!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Mr Fab:

The horror version: "I Am Sitting In A Room...the same one you are sitting in..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Rich in Washington:

There MUST be an avant garde radio show somewhere called I Am Sitting In A Room. There just must be.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Kat in Chicago:

hahaha Fab
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Rich in Washington:

Ha, FAB! The calls are coming from your room!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Rich in Washington:

Don-O, are you getting closer to rejoining us?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Zipperhead7:

I watched a PBS doc on WBCN earlier this week and thought "Jeez, someone should do a doc on WFMU." Lo and behold, there is one! I streamed "Sex and Broadcasting" a couple of days ago. Pretty good flick; nice to see the nod to the late great Lorenzo Milam
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Kat in Chicago:

OHM 3CD+DVD on eBay for $55 + shipping. Seller states in description "I'm hesitant to sell this"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Rich in Washington:

There's also a pretty good old doc on Lorenzo that's worth finding. Can't recall the title ATM
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Kat in Chicago:

I have "Sex and Broadcasting" Zipperhead7, you can still buy it I think!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Mr Fab:

Yeah it comes with a record, a book, all kinds of cool stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Rich in Washington:

I'm proud to DJ on an OG 'KRAB Nebula' Lorenzo station, KBOO.
Avatar 8:57pm Don-O:

Rich: my "official" return might have to wait until the new house happens by early next year. In the meantime, I getting a new computer.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Kat in Chicago:

Yeah Zipperhead7 www.factorytwentyfive.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Rich in Washington:

I hope things are improving for you and yours, Don-O! What an ordeal.
Avatar 8:59pm Don-O:

...oh, and I need to get a new desk as I'm doing on the corner of my "other" bed. Not good for my back.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Zipperhead7:

I did a term paper once on the tortured history of KCHU/KNON in Dallas. Milam said that Dallas was "as hard as a tumor." That's for sure!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Kat in Chicago:

No that doesn't sound too ergonomically sound, Don-O
Avatar 9:04pm Don-O:

My bedroom is the kids room as this this temp house was used as a AirBnB: I got two short kids beds (thin mattresses) but the second bed serves as a desk....and a piss poor one at that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Rich in Washington:

Oh man. I am so sorry!
Avatar 9:05pm ironybread:

Is anyone else experiencing massive volume jumps on the stream?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm ultradamno:

@ironybread Yep. Sounds like something terrible is happening.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Zipperhead7:

Yep. Gain was leapfrogging on Can
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Rich in Washington:

Oh no
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Kat in Chicago:

The levels did get weird for a bit, seems more stable now though
Avatar 9:06pm TDK60:

I am and couldn't tell if it was meant to happen.
Avatar 9:07pm Don-O:

Yea, that volume is bouncing....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Rich in Washington:

I'm not registering any stalls on my streaming software. Let me check my bandwidth. is it still doing it?
Avatar 9:08pm Don-O:

Not RIGHT now....
Avatar 9:08pm ironybread:

No volume jumps for about the last 2 minutes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Rich in Washington:

my bandwidth is unusually good right now. Hmmm. Maybe an isolated blip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Rich in Washington:

How about now? I know it's hard to tell with glitchy sounding music.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Zipperhead7:

Hey I just downloaded the Can set from Bandcamp and when I tried to unzip it I got this: "You do not have permission to open the document“. WTF?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Rich in Washington:

Not sure what would make the volume jump.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Kat in Chicago:

It seems ok now
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm ultradamno:

It's settled down
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Mr Fab:

Sounds fine to me.

But it might be a case of, to quote an old WFMU slogan "...where you can't tell the technical mistakes from the programming."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Kat in Chicago:

Zipperhead7, that's weird. could be whatever you're unpacking it with? once in awhile PeaZip gets cranky and tries to tell me it can't open something
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Aitch:

assumed it was intended
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm ultradamno:

Speaking of Bandcamp, People Like Us' whole digital discography is 85% (when you buy it all) while it's still going on. peoplelikeus-vickibennett.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Kat in Chicago:

I recall it as "Those aren't buffering issues, that's our programming!" Would be a good pledge shirt IMO
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Zipperhead7:

It's WinZip. Aaargh!
Avatar 9:15pm ironybread:

Seems to be all better now
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm ultradamno:

...which is just under $36 on the low end.
Avatar 9:16pm ironybread:

Zipperhead, can you upload the file for downloading? I can try to defeat the bastard
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Kat in Chicago:

ultra, I've got a lot of Vicki's stuff already but at that price I might go for it. I haven't done my Bandcamp Friday shopping yet
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Kat in Chicago:

I reckon she could use the $$
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Zipperhead7:

Ironybread -- at the risk of sounding like a numskull, to where should I upload it?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm WR:

early to listen, late to comment. I hear all ok here. Now wondering what that button you pushed does, what will be the reckoning. . . .

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Kat in Chicago:

I thought the singer here was David Byrne for a sec
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Rich in Washington:

Weird. I could see that my interface was going into the red for no reason. Maybe pushing the volume is making it freak out? Could also be this old version of Mixxx DJ software I am using ATM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Rich in Washington:

Late 70s/early 80s, every major city had their David Byrne.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm ultradamno:

Did he just sing "spray a robot with a can of mace"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Rich in Washington:

I remember reading a interview with Glenn Branca and he pretty much accused David Byrne of ripping off another band that sounded exactly like Talking Heads before he even got into bands, from Rhode Island, where Byrne was in art school at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Rich in Washington:

OK now? I can sorta hear the stream in the other room. Is it still jumping around, level wise?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Zipperhead7:

sounds good from here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks. Weird. Hopefully won't happen again.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Aitch:

I think she might have wanted to be in Blondie
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Kat in Chicago:

Who wouldn't have wanted to be in Blondie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Rich in Washington:

Gonna shift gears a bit
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Kat in Chicago:

Grunge Set?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Rich in Washington:

I have really vivid memories of this coming out and hearing it for the first time.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Zipperhead7:

It was kinda interesting to suddenly have my headphones jump an inch off my ears. Reminded me of when I went on long drives and nodded off, I'd get out and slam the door on my hand. Woke me right up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Rich in Washington:

Sorry about that! That's really strange.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm ultradamno:

I will always think of this as Creamo Coyle's mystery song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Mr Fab:

Was wondering if "White Power" was some kinda Skrewdriver-type thng. But the lyrics did seem to be ridiculing the concept.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Kat in Chicago:

I assumed the worst at first, then I wasn't sure. couldn't understand enough of the words
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Rich in Washington:

I looked it up. I was sorta curious but yeah, it was ridiculing the concept. Seattle had a large racist skinhead scene but more towards the mid-80s (as did Portland).
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Kat in Chicago:

This didn't seem like the kind of comp you'd find that sort of thing on. Chicago had racist skins for sure (and anti-racist)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm ultradamno:

I hate Illinois nazis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, Chicago and Boston and NY had huge skinhead scenes before Portland. My friend Erin did a fascinating podcast series on the white supremacist scene in 80s Portland. It's called It Did Happen Here. It's really worth listening to.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:56pm ultradamno:

There was a big outdoor show in Indianapolis that DOA and The Dicks headlined and a bunch of Chicago skins showed up at and they put aluminum can tabs between their fingers for the mosh pit. Nice kids.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Kat in Chicago:

yes, charming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Rich in Washington:

the skinhead thing got awful at punk shows towards the end of the 80s and early 90s. Most punk kids were easy prey and the police weren't sympathetic. I remember swarms of skinheads just showing up at shows and basically shutting them down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Rich in Washington:

I meant, the police weren't sympathetic to the punks. Kinda like today. I would imagine some of those skinheads later became Portland policemen.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Kat in Chicago:

I was JUST wondering if any of the old Chicago skins became CPD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Mr Fab:

Yikes. LA didn't have a nazi-punk problem. But we did the Suicidals. I liked Suicidal Tendencies as a band but I don't recall them ever attempting to distance themselves from those flaming assholes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Rich in Washington:

Maybe one of my last punk shows of that era, I went to see Tesco Vee and the rebooted Meat Men. And all these regular kids suddenly learned that punk clubs were a thing because of Courtney Love doing a photo-op at the Satyricon, Portland's oldest, grungiest punk club.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Aitch:

The punks and the skins both used loads of heroin in Sydney and kind of blurred into each other anyhow.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:02pm ultradamno:

Now this has me wanting to hear Solger
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Pauly from Clifton:

In NYC, Stormtroopers of Death attracted that Nazi skinhead crowd. I hated that Scott Ian and Billy Milano encouraged it as a big joke. What bullshit. I stopped going to see SOD and Anthrax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Rich in Washington:

and all these skinheads decided to converge on Satyricon that night because of the Meat Men but also there was a fight there the following week involving some club regulars.
So, all these skinheads plus all these regular bro type MTV watching boys who suddenly discovered punk clubs were a thing.
It was fucking epic. Just shit and glass and fancy sweaters flying everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Rich in Washington:

previous week, I meant.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Kat in Chicago:

"shit and glass and fancy sweaters" LOL
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:06pm ultradamno:

Guess that DOA show was 85 twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Mr Fab:

"and fancy sweaters flying everywhere" Ha!

Oh yeah Pauly, I remember "Speak English or Die," which did not strike me as the least bit funny, and really put me off them. Yet I had a Jewish friend who liked 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Rich in Washington:

I had a girlfriend gift me that SOD shirt once. She didn't get it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Kat in Chicago:

Is this Moving Parts right now? I quite like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Rich in Washington:

OK, here's a band I never thought I'd be playing here.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:09pm ultradamno:

I saw Anthrax once. They wore native headresses and, you know, sucked.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Kat in Chicago:

I like older Soundgarden
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm ultradamno:

I also saw Soundgarden once, they cover Spinal Tap, it was the highlight of their set for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Rich in Washington:

I went through this stage of liking thrash metal like Anthrax and Celtic Frost, etc. My roommate at the time was a huge metalhead and we'd trade all kinds of music.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm ultradamno:

Covered, that is. Voivod headlined and were awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Rich in Washington:

Soundgarden is actually a pretty good band. Not into their later stuff but I like Kim Thayil's guitar playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Pauly from Clifton:

ultradamno, saw Anthrax a couple of times and was unimpressed. They thought they were better than they actually were.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Rich in Washington:

Well, Voivod are awesome.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Zipperhead7:

Gotta figure that any band that would call themselves "Anthrax" aren't real sharp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Rich in Washington:

I wore out my I'm The Man cassingle
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:13pm ultradamno:

@Pauly I went to see Slayer, who were great but are also dicks
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Kat in Chicago:

Soundgarden was great the couple of times I saw them. I was really sad about Chris Cornell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Pauly from Clifton:

ultradamno, agreed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Rich in Washington:

I saw Cro-Mags open for Motorhead, who were opening for Megadeth. We left after Motorhead. I was deaf for two days.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm ultradamno:

I was always pretty picky about thrash metal, but liked this German band called Deathrow who never really picked up much of a following here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Mr Fab:

I guessed i was amused enough by Soundgarden to ask to borrow one of their tapes from a friend and listened to it a couple times. Can't say i ever asked to borrow anyone's Nirvana albums. Who were not terrible, but I never felt the need to investigate them too deeply.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm ultradamno:

I don't think I ever saw Cro-Mags, I did see Agnostic Front, who I thought were a joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Mr Fab:

Husker Du were the band that had my ears still ringing the next day! Started bringing earplugs to shows after that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Rich in Washington:

my favorite Nirvana story was the time we showed up at Satyricon to just blindly see who was playing and it was a couple of Seattle and Oly bands and one of them was Nirvana. We thought Seattle bands sucked at the time so we didn't go. Probably '89 or so?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:17pm ultradamno:

I remember liking In Utero well enough but feeling it was like a sampler of hip influences of the moment, like a self-conscious demonstration they really weren't an MTV band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, Husker Du were fucking loud.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm ultradamno:

Hmm, I don't remember them being that loud when I saw them. Maybe I got deafened early being up front.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Pauly from Clifton:

Mr Fab, your experience was like the first Motorhead show I saw with Brian Robertson. Loud. It's like I was wearing earmuffs for two days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Rich in Washington:

I remember having immense hometown pride when Nirvana got big but then got really sick of them quick. Nevermind was fun but it seemed really overproduced to me. But must've listened to it a million times. One of the few things my then wife and I could listen to together.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Kat in Chicago:

I wasn't that big a Nirvana fan, but I did own a copy of Bleach for a while. They played Metro a couple of times during the period I worked there, never saw them in a larger venue than that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Zipperhead7:

Cabaret Metro! First mosh pit I ever saw -- Fishbone at CM
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Kat in Chicago:

Nice, Zipperhead! I suspect I was at that show. Yeah it was still "Cabaret Metro" then. I used to do their flyers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Rich in Washington:

Oh wow. Fishbone had wild shows from what I heard. I've unfortunately never seen them live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Mr Fab:

I did really like Nirvana's pre-fame "Sliver" single. Apart from the song, I like how on the pic sleeve, Cobain is standing in front of one of my fave spots at the time, Raji's. At the time Courtney was also in Hollywood, dancing the hoochie-coo at the fabulously-named nudie bar Jumbo's Clown Room.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Zipperhead7:

I think it was around '89. I lived in Iowa City and often attempted to set a land speed record to see shows at the Metro and get back home
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Kat in Chicago:

LOL that sounds like a rejected name submission for what became Sheena's Jungle Room
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Rich in Washington:

I know! I love that name!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Mr Fab:

Aargh, Rich, Fishbone were FYRE! as the kids say. Saw 'em a bunch, tho the last time I caught 'em, too many members had left and they seemed to have lost a step.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:25pm ultradamno:

Jumbo's Clown Room an all calliope stream. Make it happen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Rich in Washington:

I actually like Hole's first couple of singles.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Kat in Chicago:

We were undoubtedly at some of the same shows, Zipperhead. I worked full time there from '88-'92 and was around since '82
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:27pm ultradamno:

I like Live Through This, as sick as I am of it now (Hole popping up on Yellowjackets was stomach turning), awful live around that time though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Rich in Washington:

No more volume freakouts?
I think I know what it might be. Let me know if it's happening again.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Kat in Chicago:

It's been fine since the last flurry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Rich in Washington:

I'm also running my levels rather low, so after the show, be sure to turn down when I stop streaming because the stream's gonna be really loud, comparatively speaking.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm ultradamno:

I think we've talked about a couple of Metro shows we were both at, Butthole Surfers and Chris & Cosey, maybe you did the fliers I posted or something...

Volume doing well now
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm ultradamno:

U-Men, saw them a couple of times. Good band, kind of annoying singer.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Kat in Chicago:

We've definitely discussed Metro shows, ultra. I think you tweeted one of my old flyers but I forget which one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Rich in Washington:

It's gonna take me an hour to backannounce all this. Oh well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Rich in Washington:

I heartily recommend the documentary Hype if any of this Seattle stuff is of interest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Mr Fab:

been diggin all this "grunge" and "alternative-rock."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Zipperhead7:

There's a fine documentary on Fishbone: "Everyday Sunshine."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Mr Fab:

let us now all speak grunge slang: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Rich in Washington:

the grunge lexicon scene in Hype is fucking hilarious. Just literally made up by someone who worked at Sub Pop to fuck with journalists.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm ultradamno:

Journalists, those cob-nobblers!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Zipperhead7:

Yes, many are lamestains
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Rich in Washington:

Tad is definitely a band I didn't appreciate at the time but really dig now.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm ultradamno:

I saw that Fishbone doc. It was fun.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Kat in Chicago:

I saw Tad at Metro once and loved it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Rich in Washington:

Love this song. I always thought the single version sounded like an outtake from My Life In The Bush of Ghosts.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm ultradamno:

I can't remember if I saw Tad or not, I know I saw Ed Hall...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Zipperhead7:

Yes! I am digging this bass line
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Kat in Chicago:

Oh I like this too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Rich in Washington:

There were bands that I saw opening for people that I didn't really watch - would go out back and drink and smoke etc, while waiting for the bands I wanted to come on. It's entirely possible I saw some now 'famous' bands but didn't know it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Mr Fab:

I also thought of Eno/Byrne. Which is a good thing because we really need "My Life In The Bush of Ghosts" to be its own genre.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Kat in Chicago:

I was back hanging out at the bar for some of those bands, for sure. I saw Liz Phair play solo to like four people at Lounge Ax, can't remember who she was opening for
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Kat in Chicago:

I was like "these are good songs" but overall impression was meh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Rich in Washington:

Some of these bands on the Syndrome comps sound a bit On-U Sound adjacent, too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm ultradamno:

I saw Sun City Girls and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 at Lounge Ax, that was great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Rich in Washington:

That must've been awesome, ultra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Rich in Washington:

Wow. I hope I can finish out this set. Where does the time go?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm ultradamno:

Yeah, I remember that club being a long, narrow space, like seeing a band in a shipping container.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Kat in Chicago:

That's accurate, ultra, it was a weird awkward space for shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Rich in Washington:

Speaking of weirdly shaped spaces, Sparks is coming to my town early next year and playing at the wonderful but horrible sounding Crystal Ballroom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Mr Fab:

Future famous opening acts? I used to see Jane's Addiction on the bottom of bills, and a pre-Black Eyed Peas Fergie in a terrible band called Wild Orchid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Rich in Washington:

actually, Crystal Ballroom isn't horrible sounding but just not very good. It's acoustically a nightmare, being over 100 years old.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Aitch:

Sparks have never toured Australia, will probably never get to see them, bummer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Rich in Washington:

That's a shame, Aitch!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Kat in Chicago:

They're playing Copernicus Center here, which should be wonderful and not horrible sounding. I paid considerably more for my ticket than I have ever paid to see a band but I figured it was important to see them while I can
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Mr Fab:

Lounge Ax actually sounds like it's laid out like CBGB, which was a long, narrow space, with the bar running along one side.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm ultradamno:

It was like a running joke here about touring bands being made to open for Zero Boys, so I've seen a lot of iconic hardcore bands as opening acts. Die Kreuzen comes to mind.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm ultradamno:

@Mr. Fab Yeah, the bar was like that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Kat in Chicago:

I recall it being a bit more boxy up front than CBGB, but similar
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:54pm ultradamno:

Flier from I think the second time I saw U-Men twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Rich in Washington:

I saw Die Kruezen when their first LP came out and they were insane. So good. I couldn't believe how extreme they seemed at the time.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Kat in Chicago:

Die Kreuzen were super popular here back in the day. Very good band.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Zipperhead7:

Richard Lloyd's book "Neobohemia" is an interesting take on the Wicker Park area in Chicago. Utra, was that the Die Kreuzen show with the dry ice fog?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Aitch:

Thanks Rich, happy birthday lungs
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Kat in Chicago:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Zipperhead7:

Great show,Rich. Cngrats on third anniversary!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:01pm ultradamno:

There was a review of the Zero Boys 80s ep in an issue of Touch and Go (written by the aforementioned Tesco Vee) that referenced a copy of Effigies Bodybag single that had "Jello's not so cool, he likes the Zero Boys" inside it, likely direct blowback from being forced open for them at Crazy Al's

@Zip that was a later, probably October Days show at No Bar in Muncie

Possibly from that show twitter.com...
