A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Hi Zipperhead7!
Hi Kat!
Avatar 8:08pm ironybread:

Hi Otis! Hi Rich! Hi UltraD! Hi Zip! Hi Kat! Zip - yes, I am in fact DJ-ing Mr. Beans' sweet 16 party! It's in Novosibirsk, but that isn't going to stop me! They've promised me they'll do their best to secure me the tickets I need to get there! (But not back.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Rich in Washington:

I thought I was DJing George Beans' daughter's party? WTF?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:09pm ultradamno:

Hiya ironybread!

They better lay a case or two of PBRs on ya
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Rich in Washington:

my coffee's not quite drinking temperature yet.
Avatar 8:10pm ironybread:

Reminder: As Rich demonstrates, there are actually a BUNCH of great tracks on "Future Shock", not just the obvious "Rockit"! Although we all have permission to play "Rockit" on our shows! And NOT just in exchange for a case of PBR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Rich in Washington:

I'll bet when you play Rockit at that sweet 16 party, a bunch of millennial kids think it's the Miami Vice theme.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Otis:

Future Shock is killer along with the 12" singles released at the time. Fav one is the 12" for Autodrive with Cameleon 83 on the B.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:14pm ultradamno:

What do you get for playing Art Of Noise's Close (to the edit)? Michelob Dark?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Otis:

Or Axel F Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Rich in Washington:

Thats the song I was thinking of!
Avatar 8:16pm ironybread:

For playing "Close (To the Edit)" you get exactly what I got when I played it on my show earlier this year, that is to say a lunch of the vegetarian chili from Trader Joe's, which I bought and cooked myself
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Rich in Washington:

I should dig up Trademark G's mashup of those two songs.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Otis:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm ultradamno:

Seems like there should have been a fire in West Side Story, given the emphasis on the fire escape
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Rich in Washington:

yeah, there was an inordinate amount of fire escape action in that film without any actual fire.
Avatar 🎸 8:54pm Cp304:

i like the midi notes behind the escape
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Rich in Washington:

This record's nuts. The accordionist has pickups on his fingers to try to do percussion sounds but it's horribly recorded.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Will the Sound Guy:

Hi Rich and all!!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:21pm ultradamno:

Kind of funny having 100 Flowers and Urinals back to back on Kill yourself...they should have followed it with Salvation Army and 3 O'Clocks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Will The Sound Guy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Rich in Washington:

I didn't appreciate it at the time but I now really like the artier bands more than the aggro punky bands.
Avatar 9:29pm ironybread:

And flights of angels see thee to thy rest, Otis. Just make sure you're up in time to hear my show tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Rich in Washington:

Was super surprised to see Carl Stone on this comp and I think this is the standout track from the whole shiteree.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm ultradamno:

The New Alliance comps, Chunks and Cracks In The Sidewalk, Feeble Efforts would fit right in here nicely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, I am thinking of those. Also, some of those Freeway Records spoken word records but they'd be a nightmare to playlist - some of the tracks are just a few seconds long.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm ultradamno:

This is great, hard to top Minutemen for me though
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Zipperhead7:

Yeah, Minutemen were the best. They are missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Rich in Washington:

I don't play enough Saccharine Trust on my show.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm ultradamno:

Love hearing Joachim doing his best Stiv Bators here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Rich in Washington:

I think peak SST was when they had ST, Minutemen and Meat Puppets on their roster.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm ultradamno:

Certainly the label had a more focused identity then.

100 Flowers are underappreciated, there really is little significant difference between that incarnation and Urinals, but the earlier name seems to get more respect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Rich in Washington:

Urinals coming up
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm ultradamno:

It got a lot harder for good SST records to distinguish themselves against the field of all the other SST records after awhile. Same with Homestead
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Rich in Washington:

They did get fairly diversified in the mid to late 80s but the larger indies started trawling for bands and SST had some peculiar accounting practices. Nearly every band who left them had acrimonious legal battles with them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Will the Sound Guy:

I bought the minutemen double nickels on the dime and gave it to a friend... I need to get that double lp again. that copy was clean too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Rich in Washington:

I foolishly gave a lot of my hardcore & punk records away in the late 90s and have been slowly buying some back but also buying CD reissues, etc.
Double Nickel is one of those where the CD reissue is just fine with me. I also had, and miss, Three Way Tie For Last.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm ultradamno:

Yeah, there's some pretty funny moments in Border Radio, like when "Craig" from "DDT Records" leaves messages for Chris D that seem to speak to some frustration there.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Zipperhead7:

I understand that Greg Ginn is not universally admired for his business acumen
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:50pm ultradamno:

Well, it did get to the point where Greg performed as Black Flag by himself with backing tracks, attesting to his general popularity among those who've worked with him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Rich in Washington:

Oh wow. I did not know that. Like, live?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Zipperhead7:

Hmm . . . the Bernard Stollman of punk?

the whole flag, black flag thing got all torqued up at the time...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:53pm ultradamno:

Apparently, Nate was talking about this on an Oh, My Soul awhile back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Constantly Choking:

Just tuning in, sounding great! think I'm gonna have to find this comp. With a name like that can't go wrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Rich in Washington:

And then there's Keith Morris' band OFF!.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Constantly Choking!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:55pm ultradamno:

I liked when he started bringing in the theremin and awkwardly tried to "play" it and guitar at the same time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Rich in Washington:

What? Really?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Will the Sound Guy:

that's wild
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:57pm ultradamno:

Yeah, there's stuff of you tube of that.

He may not have been alone but definitely couldn't get a bassist and used a bass machine wfmu.org...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:57pm ultradamno:

Gif of theremin/guitar mastery twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Rich in Washington:

OMG
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Aitch:

Holiday houseguests scatchinhheads to soundtrack, so job well done Rich
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Zipperhead7:

That's hilarious, ultradamno!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Rich in Washington:

This song is making my cat Tigger act really rowdy.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Aitch:

Rowdy is fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Rich in Washington:

Yay, Aitch! I aim to confuse!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Zipperhead7:

Yes, the lamp and stone have stopped arguing. What a relief
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Aitch:

You’re the gateway Rich.it was you that led me astray, but I likeit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Rich in Washington:

I confused myself there for a moment.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:06pm ultradamno:

Also, speaking of Greg's brother, who hates him, Raymond, did you see this from last month? Fallen Art Star Charged with Peddling Raymond Pettibon Forgeries www.artforum.com...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Aitch:

Flobulated
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:08pm ultradamno:

Life Is Fake So Why Not Forge This Cartoon?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm ultradamno:

They did show pics of Belinda watching The Germs during The Go-Go's Rock Hall induction bio package. Probably as close as they'll get to it.

Yeah, 100 Flowers/Urinals, largely same lineup (Urinals were a five piece at some points, but pared down to the core trio...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Constantly Choking:

Can't abide forging Pettibon but I don't really hate that fallen artist's paintings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Rich in Washington:

Gawd. I need to read that!
I do remember Raymond going on a rant about some relatives stealing his art or records or baseball cards or something.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:17pm ultradamno:

There's a fun Flipside Video Magazine you can find on You Tube that has 100 Flowers playing California's Falling Into The Ocean with D. Boon (who, of course, covered Urinals' Ack Ack Ack) and Keith Morris go-go dancing and providing vocal interjections and general roughhousing
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm ultradamno:

...or maybe it was Surfing With The Shah, both songs are on it. It's #2, there's also some Minutemen and Angst on it
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm ultradamno:

It would funny if this Hancock made onto the NWW list
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Zipperhead7:

Pete Cosey is listed on the credits of this LP but his slash 'n' burn guitar seems to have been mixed out of existence
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Rich in Washington:

he really could be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Rich in Washington:

Here you go, Zipperhead7!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Zipperhead7:

OK I hear him a bit now
Avatar 10:33pm ironybread:

Wow, that's Sly on skins? I had no idea
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:35pm ultradamno:

This is agitating my cat. I think she's afraid dancing will break out.
Avatar 🎸 10:35pm Cp304:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Rich in Washington:

This is interesting to me as I am reading about the Coastal and Columbia Basin indigenous people right now.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm WR:

This is too close to be true to make me laugh.
Avatar 10:47pm ironybread:

Oh this shit's gonna get ever darker, WR.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm WR:

Bring it on.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Zipperhead7:

Jeez this is bleak
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Constantly Choking:

yeah, this is a very dark but definitely effective piece
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Rich in Washington:

Imma get a beer.
Avatar 🎸 10:52pm johnec:

Yeah, that was tough to hear. Definitely appreciate the meaning though. Can’t learn if ya don’t know

Avatar 10:59pm ironybread:

Rich, your WFMU icon and Dead Moon were pulsing exactly in sync for about 30 seconds there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Rich in Washington:

I wish I had the energy to go over but cooking for my horde yesterday and flinging my grandsons around has worn me out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Constantly Choking:

Great Set! Much appreciation!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Zipperhead7:

Goodnight everyone! Off to beddy-bye . . . hope I don't dream of smallpox-infected blankets . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:59pm ultradamno:

The men in this band went out so close together. I'm not saying she killed them, I'm just asking the critical questions, Fox News style.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:02pm WR:

Thank you Rich! Thank you Ironybread for the new FST set coming to my mailbox soon.
Avatar 11:02pm ironybread:
