Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mark. Would anyone object to some giant tiki torches in the sky?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm listener james from westwood:

Evening, Mark, innocent-seeming antenna trees, and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Handy Haversack:

A few cell tower disguises on this our East Coast are landmarked for me ...

Mark! Techyon Drives! The Techgin has Tech sweet vermouth, Tech dry vermouth, and Tech OJ in it, but there's always room for Techtonic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm HyperDose:

You think Carmichael could rig a pulley system tall enough to light them all?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm ultradamno:

Mark! Techtobscured!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Handy Haversack:

If Carmichael can't, no one can!

Hey, James, Ken, HyperDose, ultradamno!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm DjLorraine:

Hi Mark and friends
Avatar 6:03pm Bas NL:

Mind the trees. Hi Mark! All!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm ultradamno:

Hiya Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm coelacanth:

greetings Mark and Annette and techtonicritters
  6:05pm David in London:

Evening Mark and all Technoids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm DjLorraine:

Aha 👀🌵🌳🌲
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

ACME's cool new high-voltage saguaro cactus. The coyote will never guess!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Mark! My kids and I look for a fake cell tower "tree" on rt 44 that is one of our landmarks.
Avatar 6:06pm Bas NL:

The love the detailing with the red lights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm listener james from westwood:

OMG, the cactus one is a gas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Webhamster Henry:

Since it turns out that birds (reportedly) don't bump into big structures that are painted in zebra strips... they should try it on Cell towers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Handy Haversack:

David! You made it! Do I have to have a word with your organization about freeing you to chit chat on the WFMU boards? They have gone too far!

Yo, DjLorraine, coela, Webhamster, Bas!
  6:07pm P-90:

I always enjoy Mark’s NPR-style interview intro music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Mark Hurst:

Hi @james @handy @hyperdose @ultra @lorraine @coel @KfHP @webham @P-90 - thanks for joining in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm coelacanth:

i very much prefer disguised cell phone towers over undisguised ones.
we have them here too of course - even palm tree ones -and there are no naturalized palms here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm tim from washington:

Hey Mark and everyone! This should be a fun show.

There's a generic faux evergreen cell tower near my work that DOES NOT blend in with the surrounding evergreens AT ALL! hahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Mark Hurst:

@P-90 thanks - it's by Kraftwerk
  6:08pm queems:

i am DEFINITELY buying this book
  6:09pm Marci:

Glad to hear this discussion - I've noticed the poorly disguised one in I95 North. And wondered wtf?
  6:09pm David in London:

Handy, I have escaped from durance vile, and am sharpening my rapier of repartee (which in truth is pretty blunt right now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Mark Hurst:

hi @queems - the book is really well done. link to the book on Annette's site at left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm tim from washington:

Hahaha - church cross cell towers. Perfect!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Mark Hurst:

@Bas hi! sorry I missed you at first. thanks for joining
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm HyperDose:

Pleased to be here mark! Hey Handy, queems, & coel. =]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm tim from washington:

It's like the undercover cop with a very poor fake mustache.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm ultradamno:

@DiL Blunt can be good, sometimes that's just the tool
  6:11pm solo mon:

The cross cell phone towers are for 5Gsus?
Avatar 6:12pm Bas NL:

@Mark You spotted my disguise.. :)
  6:12pm Marci:

These things are so tall and unsightly. I wonder what happens to the birds when they are disguised? Do they recognize them as not being trees?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Mark Hurst:

@Bas sorry you looked like a palm tree. But then I thought hey, there *are* no palm trees in Utrecht
  6:12pm The Oscar:

I encountered my first cell-tree in high school and thought it was the funniest thing I’d ever seen. It draws SO MUCH MORE attention to itself than if they just left it as a tower.
Avatar 6:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'grotesque symmetry'
- there's a takeaway...
  6:13pm P-90:

Yes, that faux saguaro cactus is kind of creepy, I keep expecting Wile E. Coyote to pop out of it with a crossbow or something…
  6:13pm queems:

i almost bought a book once called falsche chalets which had a very similar energy. i regret not buying it and i’m not making the same mistake twice
Avatar 6:15pm Bas NL:

The bell tower of a church opposite my street holds eight different cell phone antennae. Great coverage!
Avatar 6:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - it all makes a fabulous unintentional concrete metaphor for a few things now don't it.
  6:16pm David in London:

Christ, that cactus looks more like a Saturn V rocket.
Avatar 6:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...as a meme said - think of all the porn being streamed thru the Jesus statue...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm PaulRobeson1920:

Hi Hi Hi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm tim from washington:

Do the church icon cell towers have a direct line to The Big Guy?
Avatar 6:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

When something becomes obsolete or passe - it is Miniaturized &/or committed to the Museum.
I think of a little 18th Century churche in Boston dwarfed by high-rises all around it. The larger thing is the real Cathedral of the Civilization's Values.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm tim from washington:

RRN - that's a good observation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

If the towers were adopted by major corporations and changed up just a bit (Pepsi drinking straw / Porsche stick shift), would that be an improvement?
Avatar 6:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...probly from 'Darkness & Scattered Light' by William Irwin Thompson...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm coelacanth∅:

RR absolutely.
america...and china. (same thing)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Mark Hurst:

@KfHP don't give them ideas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm coelacanth∅:

Ken i think so.
...if they didn't have laughably bad camouflage they'd still be there, still be as tall, and be uglier and less interesting.
might as well make them amusing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Handy Haversack:

What eye can frame / that dopey symmetry.

Why is it that, to me at least, there's something cool about actual red-and-white, red-plane-warning-lighted radio towers? Is it just nostalgia?
  6:23pm P-90:

Yes it was Brautigan
  6:23pm garlic lover:

Cool documentary by Adam Curtis named after that poem, All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Carmichael:

Just joined, he he. ALWAYS backread the list ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm tim from washington:

Did Steppenwolf get that line from Brautigan?
Avatar 6:25pm Bas NL:

Near my house is a real tree that in the past engulfed a metal fence. The fence was since removed, but they left a small bit for the tree to lean on. Looks hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm ultradamno:

No palms or cacti here, I'm not sure I've seen anything comparable to this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Ken From Hyde Park:

One less fake cactus - i.pinimg.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Mark Hurst:

@KfHP that is brilliant - do you know the source?
Avatar 6:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Trees also a superb Carbon Sink Machine. For the record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm coelacanth∅:

whoa Ken...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I found it here, Mark - www.pinterest.com...
Avatar 6:30pm Bas NL:

We do have fake pine antenna trees. They have a military style camouflage print.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Mark Hurst:

Just posted to main playlist - thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm paul b:

I know there is one of these in Potomac (Md) near Washington DC. Really startled me when I first saw it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Handy Haversack:

The investigation could get prickly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm DjLorraine:

The cell towers disguised to look natural are deeply unsettling to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm ultradamno:

In the midwest it's probably like, half the area is factories so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm coelacanth∅:

it's a brave new world Mark, don't worry. everything will be taken care of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm bukowski.:

hi mark, i need to re-read this as it's been a while but i'm thinking that this is tangentially related and also of interest: mitpress.mit.edu...

Avatar 6:35pm Bas NL:

Maybe cacti have evolved naturally to the perfect antenna shape?
  6:36pm NikiA:

Ken it's you! you're famous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm coelacanth∅:

haha Bas

...if they haven't, we'll make them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Handy Haversack:

It's Manifest Destiny! CactUSA! CactUSA! CactUSA!
  6:37pm NikiA:

lmao Handy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

They're growing like magic! www.xkcd.com...
Avatar 6:41pm Bas NL:

Mmm.. just noticed.. antennae come in threesomes?
  6:41pm Listener Robert:

I knew Steve West, who would climb tall trees and install VHF and UHF antennas on/in them. He did one DXer's in Parsippany, wanted to put it in an even taller tree!
  6:43pm David in London:

To paraphrase Roger Moore in Moonraker, “Mr Musk, take a giant step for mankind.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm coelacanth∅:

zebra stripes help the guards to see the cell phone towers if they escape
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm tim from washington:

There's an osprey that nests in an undisguised cell tower near my work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm ultradamno:

The birds like the target part of the Target signs for nesting.

Best band name: Lamda Of God
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Webhamster Henry:

Some strip research: sciencenorway.no...
  6:46pm garlic lover:

I don’t think these images are simply unsettling — I sense an underlying beauty but it’s hard to put my finger on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Rick from SC:

Cell phone towers are bad. Worse are all the non native plant species everywhere. Go native
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm PaulRobeson1920:

“…only G-D can make a tree.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Webhamster Henry:

Stripe that is...
  6:47pm P-90:

Mark also used the phrase “crazy spheroid aesthetic”, I’m stealing that for the name of my new German-style electronica band.
Avatar 6:47pm Bas NL:

A single cross would be market monopoly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm NotARealDoctor:

is that St Mary of the Immaculate Reception?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm NotARealDoctor:

Our Lady of Perpetual Coverage?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm NotARealDoctor:

Star of the Five G?
  6:50pm garlic lover:

Distracted from what though?
6:51pm Dave in St Albans UK:

My local cell tower is faulty. I received a network message last week letting me know that remedial repairs cannot take place until nesting birds leave the tower. Expected date unknown. Love it!
  6:52pm chresti:

Road rash!
Avatar 6:53pm Bas NL:

...is your cell phone OK?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm tim from washington:

Oh bummer, Mark! Damn. Glad you're OK. That dude deserves to be made a lesson of on the radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm coelacanth∅:

you should've put your foot through the side of his head
  6:54pm P-90:

The content on his phone must have been FANTASTIC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Next week, you can stomp his ankles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm tim from washington:

Damn right, Mark!
Avatar 6:56pm Bas NL:

Have some pity on the disengaged.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm joe mulligan:

that trip scenario is too classic and completely identifies how people are lost in their own worlds in the city. glad to hear people asked if you were ok
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm listener 126464:

Get a lightphone! Thanks Mark!
  6:56pm David in London:

Thanks Mark. Good night Technoids.
  6:56pm Marci:

I'm angry at that jerk and want to smack him with his phone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Handy Haversack:

As I have said, my superhero alter ego would be Disconnekt, and my power would be a weak telekinesis only strong enough to slap phones out of people's hands. It would grow with depth underground so as to make the subway platforms safe for us, the fast walkers. (Though there would be power spikes at the tops of the subway stairs!)

Thanks, Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm DjLorraine:

Agreed & thank you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm RevErie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Mark Hurst:

Thanks, everyone! Good discussion this evening.
Swag For Life Member 6:58pm bloumejune:

I'm sorry for your experience. I always feel like I need to be doubly aware/alert when out and about to make up for those around me who are distracted by their phones.
In the end, they miss out on the little special moments that can present themselves when being present.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Mark. Glad to hear he wasn't upset that you scuffed his Nikes.
