Yeah. I've seen - & I'm in smalltown NewHampshuh - people put signs on their doors saying 'It's OK - we're Liberals/Demos, we got this one, Thanks'... Things about it is: Come Election Day, it's all down to Numbers & getting people to that Poll to mark the box. Which is why mail-in ballots & longer hours or days to Vote - & more places to do it - are what Democracy in the USA are all teetering on Right Now... & yerknow IDs & gerrymandering (candidates choosing voters instead of other way around...) &tc.

I think we'll vote day-of. The early-voting place is a convenient ferry ride away -- except both ferry piers involved are now closed because of corruption, incompetence, and greed. Which means either a 40-min. walk or driving to a place with no parking or I guess maybe one bus would get us within a few blocks? But day-of, it's a two block-walk and the dog can come along, which he enjoys.

Really important mayoral election in NYC this year. I feel like we are at a cross road
Avatar 3:51pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Bruce S.:

By the way excellent set Fabio
Avatar 3:56pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

is he the republican favorite? he can't be right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Handy Haversack:

Rev Rab, NYC had the coolest voting machines, with little switches and a BIG RED HANDLE. When you voted with that thing, you felt like you'd really done something. I was sad to see them go.
Avatar 3:56pm Lixiviated Life:

I climbed a route in the Gunks called "Three Pines"
It was thriling.
I think there's only 2 pines left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Threemoons:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Handy Haversack:

Where is that route, Lix? We like the Gunks a lot and will be nearby later this month.
Avatar 3:57pm Bas NL:

Sounds like a slot machine, Handy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Threemoons:

@HH I MISS those old skool voting machines. I remember being taken to vote with my Mom when I was maybe 3 years old; she explained the whole process to me. Something SO SATISFYING about the ratchety KLANG to close the curtain and then that feeling of accomplishment when you pulled it back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Handy Haversack:

Slot machines used to be cool, too! Now *those* are all digital also. It's a shite state of affairs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Threemoons:

Fun factoid: That old skool voting machine lever noise was one of the many random noises used for the sound effects of the original Star Wars movie (before they put out that beshitted "enhanced" version).
Avatar 3:59pm Bas NL:

Jackpot: Four-years-in-a-row!
Avatar 4:00pm Lixiviated Life:

So I'm gone for a few weeks and this is what I come back to?
(I wonder what's on WBAI now?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Don't know NYC - but of course this is the thing: Republicans have known for a long time that their Policies put them increasingly in the Minority. So - actual Democracy cannot be their electoral strategy. They need only double down on their base to turn them out - whereas being 'Liberal' by definition means tolerance of broader views & a challenge more like herding cats - despite our clear & ever-expanding Majority. It's clear that Government isn't keeping up with Majority opinion. The USA will become more of a Democracy - or something else now.

I lost real interest in Star Wars by 1977 - but their intent to make it a 'lived-in' Futurism was an interesting point - & remember hearing much about their organic approach to Sound FX. Thwacking telephone pole restraint cables for pew-pew lasers for example...
Avatar 4:07pm TDK60:

Is there a band called Pew Pew Lasers? Should be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm chresti:

The Should Be Pew Pew Lasers.
  4:09pm Brian in New Orleans:

that clicking bottle scene was improvised...at least the clicking..."Warriors....come out and plaaaay"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm The Oscar:

Afternoon! My favorite scene in the Warriors is at the end when the prom kids get on the subway across from them, and the two parties awkwardly stare each other down. I've been on both sides of that exchange many times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm mariano:

Not a big fan of the director's cut with the added comic-book graphics, but The Warriors has been a favorite since I first saw it way back when I was 8 or 9. One of my absolute favorite opening sequences in any movie, and yeah, it's a great tour of 70s NYC. That's the real Gangs of New York.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Scott67:

G'day Fab & Strong Ones!
✌😎🌏🌻
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm The Oscar:

Also one of my weirdest film conversation moments came while talking about The Warriors in my old college apartment, and one of my friends picked up some beer bottles, started clinking them on his fingers, and asked, "What's The Warriors?"
  4:11pm WM:

If you liked the Walter Hill movie you should read the Sol Yurick 1965). The tone of the novel is very different from the film.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So if it was set in the 1970s - what's the gangland film I remember where near the end a protagonist wanders into a Folk club & hears Dylan singing 'Times They Are A-Changing' to signify their stoopid street culture was out of time? Anyhow - stoopid street violence reigned again...
  4:12pm WM:

Oops! Sorry for the duplication.

Yeah, Chresti. These days it would probably be: So-and-So & the Should Be Pew Pew Lasers, featuring Guest So-and-So. | I saw Fish Tank a few years back. Grim.

  4:16pm Sean:

only radio show/station that plays Subotnick that I know of. amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm mariano:

WM: I was very surprised when I learned that the novel was an adaptation of Xenophon's Anabasis, about a group of Greek mercenaries trapped behind enemy lines in Persia (during the rule of Cyrus), trying to make it home in one piece.

Carmichael: That's David Patrick Kelly, great actor. He's had a bit part or two in other David Lynch stuff too. He was one of Juana's gang in Wild at Heart.

The Long Good Friday! I need to watch that again. What a combo, Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren.
Avatar 4:17pm Fabio:

@David in London: Long Good Friday is an excellent gangster film. great acting by late Bob Hoskins & Helen Mirren (though she doesn't get as much screen time)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm chris_in_space:

At the risk of stating the obvious, another great film for a time-capsule version of an older New York is The French Connection.
  4:19pm David in London:

Scotty, yes indeed, coming to the final stretch now. How are you mate?

Mariano, there’s a crazy film called Duffer, which is kind of the proto-Eraserhead, and which captures 70s London decay really well, also. Might have to send that your way at some stage.

Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Bruce S.:

Best NYC in the 70s movies Scorcece all the way with Mean Streets and Taxi Driver
  4:23pm WM:

@mariano: Yes, I knew that about the Warriors. @Fabio: I read somewhere that Helen Mirren insisted on a rewritting and expansion of her character in LGF. Originally the role was more limited. This is one example of an actress insisting on a rewrite that actually imporved the film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Handy Haversack:

The first Warrior to die, Tom G. Waites, also directed Kate's first NYC play because this is a very small town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm mariano:

Yeah, I love French Connection. Another good 70s NYC flick is Marathon Man. Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon too.

David: I'm not familiar with Duffer, I'll have to search it out, thanks.

Oh and Biden just signed a bill making Juneteenth a national holiday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm chris_in_space:

@Bruce S.: can't argue with you there
  4:25pm Androu B.:

Howdy, Failure Folks!

Just putting my 2 cents in about "The Warriors":
Most memorable thing about the movie is that it stars Michael Beck, who would be seen on the big screen no less than a year later in "Xanadu". So obviously, Hollywood was working hard to sell his name to the moviegoing masses as the new, hot up-and-comer with promising star potential. But since "Xanadu" bombed big at the box office, he's barely been seen anywhere since, if at all.
Avatar 4:26pm βrian:

Does that mean another paid day off for all of us?

Coolest sounding holiday ever, in any case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wow what a Monologue.

...er somethin' I dunno...
Avatar 4:28pm TDK60:

Wertmuller is a troublemaker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm ChukAmok:

'Network' and 'Serpico' good depictions of NYC in the 70's. 'The Panic in Needle Park' also on that list.
  4:29pm David in London:

Serpico! Around the same time as that and Dog Day, Lumet made a film here called The Offence, with Sean Connery in the closest he ever got to playing a baddie. It’s absolutely harrowing, with screeching electronic score by Harrison Birtwhistle. My mum told me that when she and my dad saw it in the early Seventies, the audience filed out at the end in utter silence.
Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Bruce S.:

Fabio, today's show is just really there
  4:30pm Miss G:

Ahhh, 15 minutes of absorption! Glad to escape from trip-planning frantic-ness.
@4:12 RRN63 the film you are mentioning is "The Wanderers." I tracked it down as a special film for a special friend (reminded him of his neighborhood.) Linda Manz: "Terrah! Ya joined tha AHHHMY!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm chresti:

Yay Juneteenth! Bandcamp too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm chris in the redwoods:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Scott67:

David, slowly coming back to life after a coffee. Was up at 5:30am today, it's 6:30am now, still dark & cold.🍵😎
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm mariano:

Androu: James Remar (Ajax) was about the only breakout star from Warriors. I think he's been working steadily ever since.

David: I'm a sucker for Lumet. There's a good one from around 1990 called Q&A with Nick Nolte as arguably the most evil corrupt cop in moviedom. Only complaint is that it has this horrible opening track. Didn't know about The Offence though, you're full of good recommendations today.
Avatar 4:31pm Lixiviated Life:

@Handy Haversack
It's rated 5.3 (3 stars in the D Williams guide).
It's past Four Horsemen and UberFalls.
Before Beginners Delight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm mariano:

Speaking of Lumet, even though it came out in 1980, I still consider it a 70s NYC cop flick: Prince of the City.

Ha, thanks, Bruce S. Kate and I had just said, basically, "Another success! Why do all our best ideas revolve around booze?"

I just read a Cuban SF book about a sentient robot obsessed with Raymond Chandler trying to use 48 Hours to catch a space criminal to prevent the aliens from abandoning Earth and mankind forever. So that movie has legs!

We have definitely had to use our hands on hikes around there, ChukAmok. The dog loves it for some reason!
  4:49pm rev. turnip druid:

DANG. Missed that SPK piece. Total flashback, that. Nth-generation dubs of old VHS tapes of that material with autopsy footage, circa 198?… jolly days…
Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Bruce S.:

You know I think the Goodbye Girl was or is a good NYC 70s movei too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm chris in the redwoods:

three pitches is no joke. my son is building climbing walls in Hackensack for a few more weeks. will ask if he ventured up to the Gunks.
  4:50pm David in London:

Evening Reverend. I saved you a piece of the carrot cake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Handy Haversack:

There's a climbing gym in LIC, Queens. I went there last weekend to pick up some donated rope for canoes. Everyone was very, very fit. And young. I felt like beer spilled ON a pastrami sandwich, abandoned on the sidewalk outside.
Avatar 4:53pm Bas NL:

Great set growing here Fabio!
  4:53pm Gnomon:

Thank you Fabio, today’s show was exactly what I needed to wake up to.
  4:53pm rev. turnip druid:

EXCELLENT, David I.L. … i may be an atheist/false reverend* but carrot cake WILL guarantee thee a seat in paradise.

*false reverend but legit turnip
Avatar 4:55pm TDK60:

Mmm..Handy. A hot pastrami sandwich on seeded rye bread with cole slaw, mustard and pickle, please! (Seitan pastrami of course)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm chris in the redwoods:

my under six foot stature and excess belly hear you, Handy.
Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Bruce S.:

It's either seitan or satan
  4:57pm Gnomon:

I was planning on going through part of the NWW List and you’re doing it for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Handy Haversack:

Oh, wow, seitan pastrami! Science, PLEASE get on that!

When I went vegetarian, I didn't miss a beat at this ridiculously wonderful deli I lived near. I just kept ordering the Black Forest sandwiches but without the meat. They were still to insanely large to eat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Handy Haversack:

^o
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm mariano:

Miss G: That's good to hear. It's always heartwarming when movie baddies turn out to be nice people.

Handy: Yes, but you're *Katz's* pastrami, never forget that.
Avatar 4:58pm fm Mike:

@Handy Haversack, what was the name of the book??? Also that "beer spilled on a Pastrami Sandwich" is a good metaphor lol. Those black forest sandwiches sound goood!
Avatar 4:59pm TDK60:

There oughta be a band called NWW List. Except these days it would be: So-and-so w/the NWW List featuring Addendum.
Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Bruce S.:

this is great Fabio thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, fm Mike! How did we miss each other last week at the gathering?

It was Red Dust, by Yoss: restlessbooks.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm chresti:

Haha TDK60.
Avatar 5:01pm fm Mike:

@Handy I skyped in with LCBD! I gave everyone a wave :)
  5:04pm Miss G:

Wow, I put in the headphones for these pieces, great. The scent of the decaying peonies in the vase getting stronger. The blue fairy lights I put up to test for a party glowing behind them. Perfection.
Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Bruce S.:

Do people in Mount Hope actualy call the station WMFU? and what happens if they don't?

Fabio, i can say with total certainly i am enjoying your selections today. always stuff i've never heard and want to hear more often.
  5:13pm Miss G:

chresti, I would love to have all y'all over for a party! In the aughts I was part of an online hobby that had meetups in Manhattan, people came from all over. Was so fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Handy Haversack:

Jason, back at you, Comrade.
Avatar 5:15pm Fabio:

@ Miss G: I'll second that -- met Mr. Kelly years ago at a party, he was very nice, soft spoken, intelligent, very unassuming and a gentleman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm chris in the redwoods:

yup, its mutual and equally apportioned, Jason.
  5:22pm Miss G:

re: Mr. Kelly I should add, that Seido Karate is point fighting, not smash in the face fighting. <the real purpose of this martial art is cultivation of character.>
Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Bruce S.:

Really into this set Fabio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Like Horror Movie people traditionally have often turned out to be especially unpretentious & appreciative & charitable & stuff... & perhaps something akin in the HeavyMetal community (altho' Rawkers can't be bet on)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Handy Haversack:

Giving away Clay's Gremlin! Fabio, you devious mastermind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm chresti:

Jason, backatcha!
Miss G, sounds like fun! We went to our first post-pandemic party a couple of weeks ago (everyone vaxxed) outside at a friend's spectacular Altadena home. I have a feeling there will be many parties and get togethers in the coming year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Handy Haversack:

chresti, was it fun -- and exhausting? That Glistener Glathering last week was a total blast -- and I could have slept for a year afterward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm chresti:

Handy, it was! Much good food and company, and yes, exhausting.
  5:39pm Miss G:

I'm exhausted already from packing -- I'm afraid I'll bring 3 sweaters and 0 toothbrush. (Do y'all still be getting swag? I fear mine will arrive when I'm gone. . .)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm chresti:

Where are you going, Miss G?
  5:41pm Miss G:

chresti, a few hours away in Virginia, it's just I haven't slept overnight anywhere in forever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm chris in the redwoods:

Miss G, maybe you could contact Joe McG to put a hold on your swag, if that's a thing?
  5:41pm David in London:

Is it the Gremlin with the denim interior and the built-in flowbee?
Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Bruce S.:

I don't want denim interior,it would be to much denim
  5:43pm Miss G:

Thank you chris, you make me realize, I should put a note on the door of the nice young man down the hall (who wakes me up every night when he comes home from his restaurant job <G>)
  5:44pm rev. turnip druid:

ooh. this.
Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Bruce S.:

I'm finding it pleasurable to say Denim
  5:44pm rev. turnip druid:

i mean, everything else as well.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Carmichael:

Has anyone mentioned Panic in Needle Park?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm chresti:

I've never seen Panic in Needle Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Handy Haversack:

Carmichael, surely someone must have -- at some point someone must have said something!
Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Bruce S.:

Good one Carmichael
  5:49pm Miss G:

And since Fabio played OST from Klute last week (week before?) i'll say that it has some great street scenes. And the last scene in the huge garment district space brought back a lot of memories!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm chresti:

I've seen panics in other parks, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm chris in the redwoods:

i have not seen or heard of that one, Carm. but it sounds absolutely horrifying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm chresti:

Panic in Needle park definitly has the vibe
