@tim i just flew down to north carolina on delta the other day and it was pretty fine. with 2 seats on each side of an aisle, they either paired you with whoever you bought your tickets with or sat you solo. no real fuss otherwise.

as a vaccinated person tho i gotta admit i appreciate the relative laxity regarding masks in establishments down south. first time being inside a business without a mask in over a year feels pretty good. your mileage may vary!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Handy Haversack:

OK, the working, it must end.

Perhaps easing into the drinking with a cider might be in order ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm nathan:

i'm vaxxed and was in New Orleans last week... quite a culture shock going from being screamed at by an unmasked fratboy in a NoLa bar to being told to mask up while on the open-air top deck of the east river ferry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm ChukAmok:

Not sure about JetBlue or Southwest...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Handy Haversack:

nathan, I have become an expert at inserting my beer can under my mask while riding the East River ferry!
  3:57pm Tom from Stirling:

People look better with masks anyway. Right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm nathan:

@Handy they must make custom ones with a builtin beer pouch... i need to investigate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Thanks for the share BB QB JA. That sounds like a decent flight. I'm flying on Delta with my 2 young kids. WIth some restrictions being eased, I was picturing air travel turning into a free-for-all of all the worst behaviors.
Avatar 3:58pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

@nathan hah. yeah. it's weirdly cultural. my guideline is basically - does this business have a "wear a mask" sign? are the patrons wearing masks? not trying to stick out even more than my obviously new york ass already does. even in the same small town here (in tennessee), we just went to a small indoor fruit / homemade jam market type place where no one but employees were wearing masks, and then to a grocery store where basically everyone was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm ChukAmok:

Has anybody tried the beer can in a feedbag trick yet?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Handy Haversack:

I took the ferry home last week after being at the station, Wall St. to Greenpoint. Drank a cider on the top deck as a crescent Eid moon set over Manhattan. Good stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm listener james from westwood:

AMBUH.
Avatar 3:59pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

@tim it will be interesting to see when the airlines change their guidelines. i think that is a totally separate department and the federal guidelines still say masks

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm ChukAmok:

@Brainiac Well, safe travels and try not to have a panic attack. I flew to NYC two weeks ago and it was a bit much going up, but the return was easier to cope with. Gotta get over that first post-pandemic flight, I guess.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm steveo:

Absolutely horrific tape gun, Handy :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm nadidadi:

Isn't ravioli just a mini, pasta-based enchilada tho?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm ChukAmok:

@Brainiac Endorsed. I also took "medicine" before going through security and it definitely helped.
  4:04pm Tom from Stirling:

Ravioli....all that cheese. Sheesh. Cheese. What is the big attraction with cheese anyway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Jason from Houston:

I dunno, karlward. I am a plain cheese person myself. Collina's serves it up with the crema rosa sauce and that's my fave. Been a vegetarian for 20+ years so I am probably not gonna break edge on a BBQ ravioli. LOL
Avatar 4:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...ok - guac in the sense of mashed avo ...not spices to clash with Italian ...there are garlic & pepper overlaps in continents...

Whether you are an educator, a student or merely a student of life, please help us out with a thoughtful letter or email, and please keep them to 300 words. Letters should address the City of Jersey City, and can be emailed to helpus@wfmu.org by May 28th. Thank you for your help.

I love the beach - lakes or ocean (though ocean preferred). What I don't love are the rude, arrogant, obnoxious beach goers. I love the mountains, and it's hard to beat finding like really cool bodies of water and waterfalls where there's also plenty of shade. With that said, there can be some really cool things down by beaches. The bays are underrated usually, and I love the more "natural" beaches, so to speak, instead of ones right in municipalities. It's nice when you're just surrounded by nature and wildlife like at an Island Beach State Park, Sandy Hook, or south Jersey natural areas like in Strathmere or Brigantine. Also Great Kills in Staten Island, which is one of my secret go-to summer spots. Never crowded, even on the busiest weekends. Also a protected beach, so you can swim. And now you can legally spark up in NYS anywhere that allows tobacco smoking.

@kevlicki: I went several times to Cape Cod with my oldest sister and her first husband.

This is bringing up more memories. I went to Long Island to visit my other sister in the 70s. Mastic Beach, Orient Point, Patchogue. Great times.

I grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn which is surrounded by beaches. Manhattan Beach, Brighton Beach, Plumb Beach, Gerritsen Beach, the community college I went to was built on Manhattan Beach (Kingsbourgh Community College) that's all we knew as kids. Beaches, boating and fishing.
Avatar 5:25pm joseloalter:

I went to an inland beach in Asturias, northern Spain. The actual shore is like half a mile away, but the sea water flows inland through underground caves and resurfaces creating a lovely little beach in the middle of a field. Ideal for people who don’t love the conventional ideal of “the beach.”

OK, I'll admit to ONE BEACH i dug & could stay for hours, and that was the north coast of Sjælland, Denmark. In autumn.

Best fish ever, best beer ever, best climate ever. What the hell is that water anyway, the north sea? That. Great stuff. So you get ONE BEACH outta me.

I grew up vacationing at the Delaware beaches, particularly Bethany, and it made me love not just the beach but the whole nautical life. I loved diving into the waves and every once in a while going through the “spin cycle” and washing up on shore with sand all up in my bathing suit.

Wow, the Bandcamp description:

"Twelve inches of evidence of a whirlwind Philadelphia weekend.. They wrote and recorded the record and played a gig and consumed a dozen burritos and a pile of beer and shipped a fella back to Omaha.. The audacious ad-hoc 4 piece ragged combo put in the sleepless 48 hours and this is what we get: 2 raw sides of electric rock action jammed with all the humbucked girth, single-coil screech & low down thud a Tascam 388 can handle. Today’s necessary palate cleanser."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Phillippe:

@Niall technically, I have a beach right outside my door, but its about a foot of mud down to the sand. we live on a river that opens into the Chesapeake Bay. There's a nice community beach that's maybe a 10 minute walk that is on the Bay. I've been in heaven since we moved here

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Handy Haversack:

queems, true! But I think in the summer it gets totally overwhelmed. Two-hour waits to board, I have heard. Ferries are pretty inefficient. Max. capacity is only eighty-eight. We used it in the fall, though, just to ride around and talk with friends and have some beers, and it was great. Walked to the beach, looked at the ocean, had a drink, came back to the ferry. Even then, it was very crowded.

Ha, thanks, Handy! Got distracted with some stuff and forgot to check the comments board, haha. I really make those trips adventures too by bringing my bicycle on a bus or train. And to Tom from Stirling's point, especially because I get cold easily and may not always want to swim, how could you not enjoy standing where the waves are washing up onto the shore while sipping on a beer? Fun grabbing a six pack from Coney Island Brewery. I was actually down there with my dog for a little a few weeks ago. Plumb Beach is also a cool little place, Stillwell. Nice stop along the greenway.
Avatar 5:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

of course that version of Hobbit leads to the mandatory double-feature with Bakshi's WIZARDS, and if we're going in that deep, delivery curry & beersies, and all the trimmings..

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Phillippe:

@Niall pretty humid! Unfortunately August is when the beaches get a little dicey, as the stinging sea nettles move in and the horse flies arrive. where we are (the confluence of the Magothy, Little Magothy, and Chesapeake Bay, just north of Annapolis) water is wide but not very deep except for the channels. You can walk in waist deep water almost a quarter mile directly from the shore.
Avatar 5:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Actually rate the RankinBass 'Hobbit' highly ! Then Bakshi started 'Lord of the Rings' ...not great. Then R&B did 'Return' - also not exceptional... But 'Wizards' is weirdly uniquely great. 'Heavy Metal' - just so much lesser than the Magazine - hard to get past that...

Ryansterlingvirtue, ha, I went there once! Swear I was just thinking about it last night. Went because nudity makes everything funnier. Was definitely weird when it was actually time to just drop my trunks in public though! Gotta get back some time. Nice spot too because I should be able to easily pick up TV signals from the Freedom Tower. Hope WFMU would come in, I guess on 91.1 in that location? There are some classic rock stations around there at least, and you can simulcast The Boss on MeTV (WJLP)'s frequency and get digital sound. Channel 33.13 has The Boss on radio while 33.10 is this really awesome weather channel with The Boss in the background. There are some other radio station simulcasts on that frequency too. You need extra-long antenna elements though because WJLP is a low-v channel on RF channel 3. The More You Know.
