Blacklight: A real-time website privacy inspector from The Markup

Facebook Strikes Deal to Restore News Sharing in Australia (Feb 22, 2021). Facebook and Google have made deals with the Australian government and Rupert Murdoch - after Facebook briefly removed all news from its platform. It's "Godzilla vs. Gamera" again, except perhaps that Gamera (FB+G) never before so openly blackmailed a national government.

Facebook might put facial-recognition tech in its smart glasses, due to launch this year (Business Insider, Feb 26)

One day in 2000 I was sharing a table with two people at The Lanesplitter. Berkeley had a big Enron office. These people at the table were talking about placing surplus military generators on remote land and putting that generated power on the grid to sell it as imported. I figured out they were Enron employees weeks later.

  6:17pm headcleaner:

btw the price of BTC has already fallen by about two thirds off the peak ($58k) it reached about 12 days after Tesla made its $1.5 billion purchase. And according to analysts, is expected to fall further. So the claim that Tesla is making a huge profit from their purchase seems overblown - if anything, they're likely to lose money
  6:17pm The Butterman:

This shit stresses me out.
  6:17pm headcleaner:

(not that I'm defending Elon Musk or nuthin')
  6:17pm PJ:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm -Ken:

One problem I see with the Markup's great Blacklight tool, is that for the many truly awful sites, they have so much tracking shit on their sites, that Blacklight times out
  6:19pm Kashmir:

The problem is the users of this info give these tech giants their power. Log off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Webhamster Henry:

I like how "algorithm" sweeps so much under the rug as to what an "algorithm" is, or how much human intervention there is, etc. etc. As a guy who wrote a system for sorting incoming mail by looking for keywords in the early 2000s, in that system, it eventually got to an agent who could figure out what the real deal was .

bandcamp.com tests out quite well on Blacklight.
  6:27pm headcleaner:

@Mark - recent reports (see link below) suggest Tesla is in trouble for their buy and that "the shine is off" the Feb 21 peak that was triggered by their announcement. BTW I'm not saying that you're trying to pull a fast one on us - just that stuff has happened since the bullisht report you were quoting. Here's a somewhat more recent take on the Tesla BTC purchase: https://news.yahoo.com/bitcoin-plunge-drags-tesla-down-164223955.html

The Markup followed Facebook and caught them in a lie? Nicely done! Oh feds, what are ya gonna do about it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Webhamster Henry:

For about a year, I've been try to push for a kind of simple idea for establishing trust. Just sign your posts, sign your data sign everything! True or false is not as important as what is the provenance of that report or post. Then, you simply don't trust unsigned messages. The trick is to get less friction in the signing/verification process.

NYC Mesh is great (by all accounts, and based on my own brief interactions with their support people). However, it is sadly still very limited in its reach (due to the fact that you need to have a line-of-sight to a site that already has it... in addition to being willing to go through the hoops to set it up on your own location). Which means ins that in many key areas where it could help the most, it's still just practically not available.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Tome:

last time i donated blood they wanted my SSN ,, so I gave @ the office instead ...
  6:32pm headcleaner:

That said it (NYC Mesh) would make for a great topic for Mark's show

  6:34pm headcleaner:

@yippie - the point is that on the internet, anonymity is never quite what it seems. "They" can find out who you are (or nearly as good: what kind of person you are) very quickly, even if you think you may be surfing anonymously - and even if you're behind a VPN
  6:34pm Roland from Australia:

But, I think I have to actually work with the Legislature. Luckily, our Assistant AG is VERY interested in tech privacy issues. Stay tuned!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm ARB:

Yes but Mark, complaining on your show IS doing something about it
  6:41pm headcleaner:

the only explanation that makes any sense, to me, for the larger peak in BTC price that we've seen since Oct/Nov... is all far-right wackos desperate to "prepare" for the full-fledged civilizational collapse many where prophecying (and no doubt, also trying to bring in effect) as the Trump-Biden contest came to ahead. (No doubt other factors were involved... but my gut tells me that was probably what drove the spike).
