The most important film I’ve found on Rarefilmm.com is Flight of the Eagle (1982) by Jan Troell. It’s about an real attempt in 1897 by a Swedish explorer to fly over the North Pole in a balloon. I’m sure I’m not spoiling anything to say he didn’t make it. Sometime in the 1930s they found the wreckage of the balloon along with photographs the crew had taken. It’s a great film that I haven’t been able to find anywhere else.

I find the sound of the Codger's voice coming to mind randomly......scary

tim from &c, that is très cool. Thank you WM for mentioning the book, it seems like I will get through this spring of seemingly-never-ending dread with Arctic exploration

Handy Haversack:

steveo, it's The Way to Hudson Bay (U.S. title), by Thorkild Hansen, about the Danish sailor Jens Munk.

Even better, honestly one of my favorite books of all time, is his Arabia Felix, about a Danish scientific expedition to Yemen in the 1700s.

David in London:

I must protest, Handy. As an Englishman, we led the world in pain-laden ambiguously successful, poorly prepared expeditions to rough, hostile lands. And Sir Ranulph Fiennes is still gamely sacrificing his fingers to the cause.

Thanks Handy, I'll look into those.

I recently read a book that covered some of the Russian Tsars' arctic exploration and that part was pretty interesting ("Analogia" by George Dyson). Not sure if i recommend the book as a whole.

This amazing Daniel Menche is making me say that also, if you get a free trial at Criterion, and see their Afrofuturism series, you can see Wyatt Cenac's series with "jazz Othello" 1962 "All Night Long" Dave Brubeck, tiny amount of Charles Mingus
