this may be blasphemy but I have recently become aware that the band was much tighter (and to some degree more appealing?) with only one drummer- i am not totally convinced of this theory but i have been getting into this era (wall of sound etc) a lot more lately

It was a pretty significant event, in peoples' minds. Black Americans didn't even have voting rights until 1965, so WATTSTAX was, especially for a younger generation who could still envision hope, a very empowering event. Obviously the struggle continues up a very steep grade, even now.

my introduction to stax records was when we squatted in the 2nd floor of a house in the black mountains in north carolina and found a stack o' stax.
... (maybe 40% stax) didn't get to hear any of them until i moved back north some time later but it did grab them all.
mostly modern gospel and parliament & funkadelic

When I first heard WFMU I was in Nutley, NJ. I was so excited I got on the bus and went over to Upsala College to the old WFMU house to hang out. I ended up running to the library for records for an absolutely insane DJ. He's in an old photo of DJs sitting on the front stoop. Still can't figure out his name.

Well the DJ wasn't old. A young adult. I was 15. The DJ was so enthusiastic, his hair disheveled, his shirt in disarray. He was raving because there was a rumor the next Grateful Dead was going to be free of charge! Hee.
