Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
coelacanth∅:

hey chresti about the last track in the other room i probably have heard it on John's show? but the first place i heard it was Olivia's show. i remember commenting that the bassline reminded me of the necks.
...and i see it has 23 "likes", your's being the first! from Daniel Blumin's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Little Danny:

Nevermind, doc: It was Bobby Martin on vibes. New name to me.

"Fatima" and "Dreamah," rhymed at last
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
JtotheK:

i like this Fatima 45. internet research shows the flip is 'kitchy koo' which brings to mind 'itchy koo' by Hank Blackman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Little Danny:

I honestly don't remember the flip, Jason, but excellent reference!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm

I would imagine that Bob Summers is what astronauts use as their soundtrack when they are walkin' (in space).

Expecting soon to have lunch with Ren Weschler, whose book about Oliver Sacks was recently reviewed in NYT. He has a connection to Danny's Marfa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dylan....Mouse And The Traps.....Art Guy!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Little Danny:

Yep, I've met him a number of times here, and had some great conversations too. Hi Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hey Dean, Ask Wren about Kienholz smashing the guy at the airports desk. I believe it was him that wrote the piece in The Believer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Little Danny:

Oh I definitely wanna hear that story, Franco!
  10:59pm
Dean:

You know, I love Kienholz, but I don't know much about him/her/them.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
melinda:

There's a new book about Oliver Sacks? I'm interested.
  11:00pm
Dean:

But I can ask him. I work closely with his brother. They're both pretty amazing dudes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well then, this is an opportunity to learn something.
  11:03pm
Dean:

Yes, the biography: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/20/books/review/and-how-are-you-dr-sacks-lawrence-weschler.html

@will from Bloomington: ???

Also, hello!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
chresti:

Like this gas..
  11:08pm
Dean:

For sure. Ray, the brother, often talks about his encounters with Slonimsky. Ren is older, so he remembers more. They are the grandchildren of Ernst Toch, an important composer who, along with Schoenberg et cetera moved to LA to escape Nazi Germany.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm

As I write this, I glance over at the book shelve where that collection is ....I know that the cover is blue, but...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Little Danny:

@will: Gotcha, I dig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Little Danny:

@chresti: so do I! Good tastes thinking alike
  11:18pm
Dean:

Ren wrote quite a bit about Slonimsky, I suspect. He was a family friend. Ray's fond recollection is that he named his cat Grody-to-the-Max after Zappa's daughter's hit.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:18pm

Barbara Lewis, remember a hit of her's I loved, Hello Stranger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Little Danny:

Ugh. My streaming computer just squelched itself.
  11:28pm
Dean:

Yep, and Ray remembers that, too. 1981.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, I found it! It's the 20th issue of The Believer - Dec04/Jan05. The issue is titled Slaves To The Visual. In addition to the Kienholz piece, there is an interview with Raymond Pettibon.
  11:39pm
Dean:

Pettibon. To me, he signaled the lapse of LA punk. I've never appreciated his work. Black Flag...boring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

I like Rays work, but I too was never a fan of Black Flag.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:42pm

i guess i have to agree with Dean about *some* musical opinions!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm

Ian S. Port just published a book about Leo Fender/Les Paul. He explains 'that sound' more evocatively and better researched that most of the things written about surf music, and what came before.
