Is it me, or is there a failure of sound emanation?

Stellar show so far. I was reading a thesis about noise, but I gave up. This is too compelling

Joy does not exist without suffering
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 3:25pm Michael 98145:

{ On January 8th 1970, in a car accident a few kilometers outside Athens, the contemporary music world lost one of its most exciting and provocative talents. Although Jani Christou was only 44 when he died, he was regarded by many as one of the leading composers of his generation. He was controversial, highly talented, and greatly admired both in his own country and abroad. And yet although his name remains respected in contemporary music circles to this day, performances of his music are extremely rare. }
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 3:27pm coelacanth∅:

haha! if you duckduckgo "joy does not exist without s" the first (& only) auto-fill-ins are:
surgery
sound
someone
sugar
...i'll take the sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 3:30pm chresti:

As long as it starts with an 's'@coel
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 3:31pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 3:34pm fred:

@coelacanth: Sarah Benhaïm. It's it French, unfortunately, and is unlikely to ever be translated. It's a Ph.D thesis is sociology/aesthetics about DIY noise defended late last year, WFMU is mentioned a few times. If you can read French, I can send it to you (it's not too academese, but 760 pages though)

Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 3:41pm coelacanth∅:

fred, je ne lis pas le français! Thanks for the offer though.
...is it interesting?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 3:42pm fred:

@Ike: sorry about summoning you earlier, but Garbecue was mentioned, and I felt I had to throw in some Felder dis, which I felt wouldn't be complete without naming you
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 3:43pm coelacanth∅:

-anyway i guess that falls into my mind's category of things to avoid, in an effort to keep my own creative juices as much my own as possible.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 3:50pm TehBadDr:

This makes me feel like a should be wandering around in the Carnival of Souls.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 3:51pm Ike:

@Fred, not a problem at all. I appreciate any dis of Don Felder at any time and in any place.

I hope there will still be a Garbecue this year. The parking lot may or may not still exist by then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 3:53pm fred:

@coel: so far, yeah. But I'm biased because the thesis is about the local noise scene I know very well. But the academic/formal approach is weirdly refreshing, coming from someone who was part of the local scene even before starting her research. And many in the noise scene are not foreign to academy or music theory. I'm only 5% through, but the defense was fun: academics on the left, noise show regulars on the right (70/30 ratio), with a musicologist dissecting "A Cunt like you". Weird to see these people in daylight, but we take community and support seriously
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 3:56pm Michael 98145:

@fred. wow. your activities are much more interesting than mine.

@Michael 98145: I just happen to meet interesting people, mainly by wearing WFMU T-shirts (never discount the power of these). And some blind luck. Mostly WFMU T-shirts though

Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 4:34pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

It's not that I would celebrate puffin mass-death, it's more of a singular thing... they just look so damned SMUG... one dreams of punting their smug little bodies off the rocks & into the sea.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 4:35pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

or a catapault might be better. A nice, colossal iron-age catapult to fling the smug little suckers into the roaring distance...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 4:37pm fred:

@RTD: I didn't mean pizza party as in celebrating puffin deaths. I meant puffins as an ingredient to that debunked hypothetical pizza party
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 4:38pm geezerette:

But how can you not love something called Puffin? It's so funny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 4:40pm steveo:

"A nice, colossal iron-age catapult to fling the smug little suckers into the roaring distance"
Why does that make me think of turtles? Or more specifically the McConnell sub-species
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 4:43pm chresti:

Yeah! Catapult McConnell!
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 4:43pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

hm... pepper-stuffed puffins might be a thing. Or a dried/preserved high-protein thing like puffin jerky.. This could be my new enterprise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 4:45pm Michael 98145:

@chresti, i'd support a Kickstarter !
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 4:45pm fred:

@geezerette: Sorry, I wasn't paying enough attention (I'm slowly getting through a friend's Ph.D thesis, it's in French, which makes it tough for me)

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 4:52pm Andrew Waterloo:

you can eat puffin if you promise to leave the rabbits alone.

Philip Wilson was a great drummer. I remember hearing him with a band Deadline at CBGB way back when. I think he was first drummer for Art Ensemble of Chicago and played with Julius Hemphill as well. He died too young.

@RTD haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 5:13pm fred:

@coel: I think RTD is vegan, but he's ready to break that vow to eat puffins, sacrificing his purity to rid the world of these cute birds. In lieu of flowers, send sriracha

geez, uhh...(!)
okay -kind of...
i mean, i've seen cute spiders too then!

I'm essentially vegetarian when I cook, but when I go out to eat (which is rare), I like to keep my options open. I was vegetarian in my early 20s, but found out trying to stay one on a grad school budget on the Upper East Side was impossible....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 5:30pm fred:

@RTD: This "Now, anything goes" seems somewhat ominous. I'd still take a chance if you ever come to Paris (not much meat on me, that makes it safer). Is you playing over here in the cards?
