listening to the Swingle Singers song, is this genre what they call Good Life? My son was telling me about it last night, said it's fairly popular with the college kids which surprised me.

What a lovely coincidence to find some of my old listeners on here like Vincent and Granny--as luck would have it, I'm filling in for Jeff Conklin on a Sunday/Monday in May. It's not listed on the website yet, but it'll be the Sunday evening of the 19th/20th at midnight. But Speaking of folks I miss, I miss Kurt having a regular slot.

(in baroque music) an accompanying part that includes a bassline and harmonies, typically played on a keyboard instrument and with other instruments such as cello or lute.
"the piece is scored for flute, violin, viola da gamba, and continuo"

YETI BOB:

Ludwig Wittgenstein's brother Paul was a pianist who lost his right arm in World War I, and continued his career one-handed. Much of the left-handed piano repertoire that exists was created for him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am
Ike:

Careful saying JA is "on assignment" -- as you implied yourself, some might assume that means he's dead. Oh wait, maybe dead is specifically "permanently on assignment". So if JA is only temporarily on assignment, does that mean he's just visiting Heaven and/or Hell today? What kind of records is he going to bring back from there for us?

@Ike JA is CIA. That opening Everley/Rolnick thing is used in Psy Ops and interrogation.
Avatar 10:03am
Kurt Gottschalk:

tdk, what mark said. 'continuo' is kind of a bass line and was often written without a specified instrument. it's kind of the support part.

yeti, fascinating about wittgenstein, i had no idea.

ike: glenn has been saying that x ray is on assignment for years when he would take a week off.
  10:06am
Mark R.:

PS I had to look it up--my comment was literally cut and pasted from Websters. I thought it was some sort of flute, too!
Avatar 10:07am
Kurt Gottschalk:

looking stuff up is how we learn stuff and stuff. not looking stuff up is how we don't learn. no shame.
Avatar 10:08am
YETI BOB:

the wittgenstein family story is really crazy. the father was a musician, he had 5 sons and he forbade them from going into music despite their talents, he wanted them to be businessmen. 3 of the 5 sons committed suicide (!). then the father decided to let the other 2 do whatever they wanted. Paul became a pianist, and Ludwig became one of the most important philosophers of his day.

yeti, amazing.

Yeti Bob, your Wittgenstein story makes me think about that line from Anna Karenina - all happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way...

..thanks for the explanation. It just sounds funny to me, listing instruments and then "continuo."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am

@Yeti Was Paul Wittgenstein a beery swine who was just as schloshed as Schlegel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
