I was introduced to chicken giblets prepared as Jewish soul food years ago by an ex-girlfriends mother.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:10pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:12pm northguineahills:

There used to be a place around the corner from my first job after college that I used to get chicken giblets, unfortunately it's not there anymore).
  Wed. 4/17/19 10:13pm Dean:

I always looked forward to consuming the giblets independent of the meal. A fringe benefit.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:13pm geezerette:

Hope there's some Miles coming up too.

Errol Garner's so suave. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:13pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Websters defines it as the edible viscera of a fowl, aka chicken livers etc
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:13pm northguineahills:

@Erica: usually the liver, but any offal organ (ok, pun away...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:14pm fleep:

Guts.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:14pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh yeah, and when said ex-girl friend went to visit relatives in Florida, she came home bemused by the idea of grits and bagels - what she ate there.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:15pm Erica:

Eh, I prefer the chicken leg or breast thank you. Don't wanna risk eating the liver.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:16pm Franco Twinkie:

Years later, I still love chopped chicken livers.....on a corn tortilla!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:17pm northguineahills:

Since I started to eat meat again, I try to eat as much of the animal as possible (and many organ meat is actually quite good).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:18pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

<<trying to think of offal puns… but they are ALL offal>>
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:18pm Funky16Corners:

Oooohhh chopped chicken livers, in the Jewish style are a DELIGHT!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:19pm Jeff Ash:

50 years ago last week, on April 9, 1969, Buddy Rich and His Orchestra -- billed as "America's most dynamic band" -- played at a college in the Green Bay area. That's all I can tell you about it. The local paper didn't cover or review the show.
  Wed. 4/17/19 10:19pm Dean:

Hell, yeah, with egg, onion, mustard!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:19pm Franco Twinkie:

The ex's mom introduced me to tongue done like an oven roast. The one at Canters can't compare.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:19pm geezerette:

Poor man's pate'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:20pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Jeff! Hopefully they played this!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:21pm Jeff Ash:

Could be. That Buddy Rich show came about 3 months after they recorded this LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:21pm Funky16Corners:

Dean!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:21pm geezerette:

Dean...mustard?!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:21pm Erica:

Hi Jeff! We're just talking about soul jazz and chicken organs
  Wed. 4/17/19 10:21pm Dean:

Hot, hot, spicy, horseradishy mustard. Damn straight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:22pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Canter's! My grandfather's family was a part of the origins of Canter's. My mother LOVED liver, chopped or ptherwise. Me, not so much.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:22pm Jeff Ash:

Hi, Erica. Gonna have to leave those topics to folks more knowledgeable than I.
  Wed. 4/17/19 10:23pm Dean:

But then I consume wasabi by the spoonful.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:23pm Erica:

Haha Jeff!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:23pm geezerette:

On chicken liver? Desecration!...Might try it... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:24pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

OK, i thought this was "Psychedelic Salad." Food on the brain…

That sounds good, too

Those menus haven't changed since Lenny Bruce and Phil Spector shared a table across from Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. How could she be confused?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:29pm Funky16Corners:

@Geezerette - I saw Dizzy when I was in high school 79/80-ish. Tito Puente and Max Roach played on the same bill

Having our first thunderstorm of the spring tonight in Wisconsin.
  Wed. 4/17/19 10:30pm Dean:

I've only been to Canter's once or twice, never encountering Rodney Bingenheimer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - We had a real loud/flashy storm the other night, Lost power at 4:00AM
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:31pm northguineahills:

When I was 10, and just moved Japan, I took my family to a back alley restaurant, and of course, I ordered the grilled tongue (lengua de taco is still a fave of mine.

@Granny: I also won a contest once by snorting a line of powdered wasabi in junior high. It made me tear up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:33pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

ngh, why am i not surprised?!?!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:33pm geezerette:

Franco, "Nippy Neptuna" was a Dupar's thing.
(L.A. lore...)
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:34pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, If you wanted to hang with Rodney, you had to be at The Salt Shaker on Arroyo Parkway about 12:30 on Sunday night after his show on KROQ. He was there as predictable as the sunrise.
  Wed. 4/17/19 10:34pm Dean:

"I ... won a contest ... by snorting ..."

Wow.
  Wed. 4/17/19 10:35pm Dean:

Rodney showed up at one of our shows at Rock Corp. in Van Nuys. He was one of the couple dozen in attendance.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:36pm geezerette:

Larry@10:29: Talk about peak experiences! Wow!
  Wed. 4/17/19 10:36pm Dean:

I believe we also spent time with him at KROQ when he was on air.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:37pm northguineahills:

@Granny: In 2012, I only came in third in a ghost pepper eating contest (there's a youtube video of it), I only ate a half. Since I've been growing my own since moving to FL, I can now eat them like peanuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:37pm Funky16Corners:

@Geezerette - It was a Newport Jazz thing called Unity With Diversity, wit Dizzy and a whole bunch of drummers. A really incredible show.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:38pm Franco Twinkie:

I need to see that menu! I swear the Nippy was at Cantors. But I did also habituate the Du-Pars on Fairfax and Beverly, so maybe I am mixing up the two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:39pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

@ngh, again, it all makes sense in the ngh mythos. FL will do that to someone!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:41pm geezerette:

Franco, I ate a lot of it while doing my homework there. A phase I went through.
  Wed. 4/17/19 10:41pm Dean:

Oh, yeah. Du-Pars. Fun.

Franco, do you remember a place on Pico, Bellini? Used to hang out there.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, Geeze, I will defer to you. I never did my homework at home let alone a restaurant with red leather booths.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:46pm Franco Twinkie:

Bellini? Not on my food radar.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:49pm Parq:

Hi, Larry. Wild sounds tonight. Not sure I could explain it, and it would take a long paragraph if I could, but this is all reminding me of Hawaii Five-0 (the original series, that is). But be that as it may, great selections, great concept -- your next Marathon premium?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq! Perhaps! One never knows, do one?
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:53pm Parq:

Maynard Ferguson (who will probably be coming up by and by, am I right?) also did a , well, very Maynard Ferguson version of "Chameleon".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:54pm Funky16Corners:

No Maynard tonight, but I will def be doing another run at this theme in the future, which will def include his version of Shaft. I have another version of Chameleon by Buddy Rich.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:55pm geezerette:

Cracked me up that you couldn't order tuna salad, just Nippy Neptuna. Menu copy is hilarious.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:56pm geezerette:

God, Lena. Timeless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 10:57pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, this is a really good album. She covers my favorite Nilsson song, too (Think About your Troubles)
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 10:59pm Jeff Ash:

Of course I step away for a couple of minutes and then there's the Hamp on Brunswick I figured would be played. Oh, well, at least I've heard it before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

You know it'll come around in the rotation again sometime, either here or at Funky16Corners

Pretty late jumping on the Beatles bandwagon, eh Ray? (The Beatles had broken up by that point).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:20pm Funky16Corners:

Well, Ray spent about 30 years playing in Duke Ellington's band, so he was busy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:21pm doctorjazz:

I used to DESPISE these jazz covers of rock tunes (classic example-Ella's Sunshine of your Love. I must have mellowed with age, find them cute and fun now.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 11:22pm Erica:

I'll take your word for it Larry. It was meant to be a joke anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:23pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I know, I was kidding around, too
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 11:23pm Franco Twinkie:

All of them, Horace. Get busy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - I think it depends on how good they are. Some of them are just awful, but if the musician in question was into it and having fun they were usually cool
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 11:25pm Erica:

Haha Franco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:26pm doctorjazz:

Speaking of chipped liver...Lox, Stock and Deli has really delicious version.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:29pm fleep:

Art's Deli is 4 minutes from here, and it has taken immense self-control to not get up and get the chopped chicken liver now. The music is too good. Morning will come.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 11:31pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup! Trying to get to the bottom of this nippy neptuna business, I found out there is now a Cantors annex in Pasadena. So tomorrow...

Eagle Rock!?! What the huh! When?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:38pm doctorjazz:

(Can't believe I'm clicky-starring these...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:38pm Funky16Corners:

Indeed. Moreso than just about any of his peers, Herman kept a hot, super tight band together long after almost everyone else. There are clips of the Herd on Ed Sullivan in the 60s that are great.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 11:39pm Erica:

Do the Eagle Rock. (Doubt anyone would get the Daddy Cool reference).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:41pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I remember Dom Deluise singing it in drag in a movie called Haunted Honeymoon
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:41pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Franco Twinkie: 1931, Boyle Heights, actually. The family lived in Eagle Rock.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 11:42pm Erica:

I know who Dom is but I've never seen that movie.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 11:42pm Franco Twinkie:

Erica! I saw Daddy Cool the night before Easter in 1972 at this old theater in Long Beach. My first total paranoid drug meltdown. They were fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:43pm doctorjazz:

Of musicians in this set, seen Blakey (explosive show), and Horace Silver. And,from the 1st set, saw Dizzy many, many times, with his big bands, and very often in NY clubs with his quintet with Jon Caddis.c always put on a great show!

Boyle Heights. It was probably on Brooklyn Ave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:44pm doctorjazz:

(It thought Daddy Cool was what my girls called me...)
Avatar Wed. 4/17/19 11:44pm Erica:

Wish I'd been there Franco. I only know two of their songs from Australian music compilations that I sought out a couple years back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/17/19 11:45pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

FT: yep! According to Wikimasters, the Canter family came from…Jersey City! And the original deli was in JC.
