Howdy! I'll never get tired of this song. $12 to go?
Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 12:02am Andrew S:

i have about 5 favourite versions of Babys on Fire and maybe another 10 in second place.
  Tue. 10/30/18 12:05am Carmichael:

Heya Jessie.
  Tue. 10/30/18 12:06am rw:

Andrew, there are 15?? I only know of about three or four.
Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 12:09am Andrew S:

well truth be told i wasnt really counting but there are at leats 5 eno versions if counting live and there are many great covers
  Tue. 10/30/18 12:09am rw:

Thinking about it, I gave a copy of this Eno LP as a wedding gift a few years ago. The bride walked down the aisle to I'll Come Running.
Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 12:11am Andrew S:

far as covers go i like that minimalist one vby an austraiian band that escapes me right now but it was a hit for them cool version
  🎃 Tue. 10/30/18 12:12am yippie:

the polka brothers played polka talking heads versions in monty hall last sunday nite
  Tue. 10/30/18 12:12am rw:

Here Come the Warm Jets, 801, BBC, Ayers Cale Eno Nico... is there another version on the CD version of 801? That would make 5.
Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 12:12am Andrew S:

the creeps maybe? something like that
Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 12:13am Andrew S:

well realkly couldnt say and dont feel like counting but it's been recorded many times
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 12:14am jj.:

there's also at least one terrible audience recording of it from his '74 tour.
  Tue. 10/30/18 12:14am Dean:

Must confess I'm a selective fan of both Eno and Talking Heads. I like one Eno tune on Before and After Science, "Here He Comes," and TH's first single, "Love Goes to a Building on Fire." Nothing much else from either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 12:15am jj.:

also, hi everybody. all bootlegs tonight as we close out the semi-silent october fundraiser. joe belock will be joining me at 1ish.

Except for -- big irony here -- My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, which I adore.
Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 12:16am Andrew S:

i like pretty much all enos stuff, i have to be in the mood for some of the ambient stuff but its all good
Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 12:17am Andrew S:

cant think oif a talking heads record i dont like either

  Tue. 10/30/18 12:18am rw:

Dean! Those first three Eno records are SO good! Your childhood and my childhood must have been very different.
  Tue. 10/30/18 12:19am rw:

Hey coel, we're geeking about Eno and Talking Heads. Please stop me.
  Tue. 10/30/18 12:20am Dean:

I dunno, rw, I just never quite got what all the hollerin' was about.

Heh, speaking of Ex (see comments on Sam's show)!

When I was a teenager, More Songs About Buildings and Food, Here Come the Warm Jets, and Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) all served as my number one favorite rock album. (Still high up there.)

yep all 3 of thoise are gems
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 12:25am coelacanth∅:

more songs and fear of music are both perfect albums for me. i don't care much for anything the 'heads did after fear of music though.

Jesse i have that version of baby's on fire/i'll come running on a boot called "music for palaces" double album.
  Tue. 10/30/18 12:27am Dean:

At that time, my favorite albums included DAMNED DAMNED DAMNED, Selling England by the Pound, and Dances of the Renaissance by Musica Aurea.
Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 12:28am Andrew S:

no love for '77 coel? Im with you where they dropped off, but not as much for me, i liked all their albums but the later ones not through and through, but there were standout tracks on all of them
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 12:30am Scraps:

Remain in Light is near perfect also for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 12:30am coelacanth∅:

77 has some stellar tracks on it, but then much of side a (if i remember correctly) isn't great, in my opinion. (uh oh love comes to town... sorry! no!) all in all it's a good album anyway.
Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 12:30am Andrew S:

man this set so far is perfect for me

Opposite? Can't wait!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 12:33am coelacanth∅:

i have an excellent Patti Smith bootleg. has the best version of "we're gonna have a real good time together" and an also good "pale blue eyes"
  Tue. 10/30/18 12:34am Dean:

Heck, no! Not all that opposite!

How the hell am I older now than Zappa was when he died...oy.
  Tue. 10/30/18 12:35am Dean:

I'm not a big Zappa fan, either, but I *loved* visiting a friend in Connecticut every year around Memorial Day, when a local publicly supported station traditionally devoted the morning to Zappa. What a great show!
Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 12:35am Andrew S:

it fits right in after that wicked Television jam. When the Mothers were at their weirdest they sound like they were from another planet
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 12:37am Scraps:

Hmm. Zappa and Smith had a similar distaste for the media...

Fave bootleg might be As Though Emerald City, a mix of Genesis's shows at the Shrine '75 and a scarce single from the time featuring "Twilight Alehouse."

Buena Park, CA, used to be the home of a marvelous bootleg storehouse, Beggars Banquet Records. Springsteen sued them. Jerk.

There's a story that circulates among Montrealers of a certain age that Neil Young stopped at the Maples Inn after the 1984 International Harvesters tour stop. Some guy, the story goes, brought him a bootleg record to sign, and Neil was in a good mood and actually signed the thing....

i bought a pink floyd bootleg when i was a teenager. it sounded like it was recorded from the mens' room but it was early workings of what was to become "animals" and some of the songs were very different, though i could tell which songs they each were to become. very interesting.
one of my sister's first boyfriends stole it.

yeah i used to live flaming lips a lot and especially wayne but he became a walking talking gimmick
  Tue. 10/30/18 1:02am Dean:

At one time I had more bootlegs of Todd Rundgren (Utopia), ELO, and the Beatles, than of their legit records. Not that I collected any of them extensively, but I preferred the grittiness.

What's with these musicians?! They bitch about something of theirs being stolen, but even bootleggers have to work to produce their product.

Wow, cool Dead cover by Meat Puppets!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 1:16am jj.:

to me, even in the '90s, bootlegs were always more about tapes you traded with other people than illicit CDs/LPs you bought in stores, though that's probably my dead freak origins showing through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 1:19am coelacanth∅:

i know what you mean Jesse, and i've made many bootlegs in that sense. 'different than pressing them up in large volumes for sale to the masses.
  Tue. 10/30/18 1:20am Dean:

In the '90s rock bootlegs began moving online. During the '70s and '80s there were plenty of stores that stocked them. Heck, Middle Earth in Downey, CA, was one hub of the network, the home of Amazing Korneyfone. It was great fun, because you'd buy the official releases, then find the oddball live shows. (Unless, like me and Rundgren and ELO, you only bought the bootleg!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 1:21am coelacanth∅:

...i guess you could call that great version of i know you rider a 'dead cover, sorta. like calling love in vain a 'stones cover if you play it sort of in a similar style?
  Tue. 10/30/18 1:21am rw:

Only semi related but I saw a rock video on YouTube recently whose ideas and technique were clearly lifted from a friend of mine. When I showed her the video she said, "It's cute. It's nice to have fans". I thought that was a nice response.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/30/18 1:30am coelacanth∅:

Anastasia i read long ago that the 'stones successfully sued someone for doing "love in vain" with their style. so there's validity in saying meat puppets covered the 'dead. (like if you played "cold rain and snow" in their style, it's pretty unmistakably the 'dead's arrangement.

Lotta mythology about Monterey Daltry said that George Harrison and Eric Clapton were under the stage at Monterey jamming with Jimi and Pete, it never happened.

Avatar Tue. 10/30/18 1:46am Adamsworth:

Ben Vaughn is good as hell though, and so is Chilton, and their collab with Alan Vega is another coincidence...If only Vega had been able to make a tv theme song!

In fact you want to talk about fake concerts the entire Band last waltz concert was overdubbed. Except for Levon’s drums he refused to do it. Neil Young’s performance was filmed with a huge chunk of cocaine hanging out of his nose, they had to do what Levon referred to as the traveling booger Matte At the insistence of his manager Elliot Roberts.
