Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Well, actually I consider the first Butterfield album and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton like two sides of the same coin. Two of the best guitar players in the world. On Cream's first American tour, they shared the bill with the Electric Flag at the Fillmore, and they jammed together. I'm surprised a recording of that night has never surfaced, because Bill Graham recorded every show off the soundboard, so I don't know why he wouldn't have recorded that one, but if there's a recording out there, I've never heard it.

America has always been great in terms of being a cultural powerhouse but in most areas we never have been. I am in agreement with Gerald Horne when he calls the Revolution of 1776 a counter Revolution, an effort to protect land owners "right" to own slaves against the growing threat of the abolition movement in England. America was founded on hypocrisy and has never managed to transcend that fully. We are not and haven't been number one in much of anything good for a while... then again all our trouble and strife has led to some great music and art so... that's nice.

crabapple as i said i do vaguely remember the airline deregulation. i don't know the details and didn't back then...and i have to catch a bus soon so i don't have much time to (turn on my other computer, then) click that link. i'd like to converse with you and i'm thinking we agree on the vast majority of political matters. you do know, though, that a president often works very hard to accomplish something that he doesn't necessarily agree with, because of pressure or threats. also, we've all had moments we're not proud of, and if i think this was the only decent human being in the presidency in my lifetime, i'm saying this *in relation to* other presidents.

...and people in charge rewrite history, so... (for instants if you look at ronnie reagan in wikipedia there's almost nothing negative - as if he was universally loved while he was in office, and didn't set this country up for all-out corporate takeover. ...but then it wasn't really him, it was the bush empire pulling reagan's strings)

Yes there is, Parq. It's a various artists cover comp. The songs may have all been recorded for it.

Anyone ever hear that old "When Pigs Fly" comp? Similar premise-- it had such recordings as Lesley Gore doing "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," and Ani DiFranco and Jackie Chan duetting on "Unforgettable."

Turns out the Like a Version comp tracks are all taken from an Australian radio show by the same name:
