Today is my 54th birthday. Many conflicted feelings. But I’m unreservedly pleased to share my birthday with Leon and Linda.

As I always say when a birthday confirms my aged state--"Well, it beats the alternative!"

Any birthday musicians today whose first name doesn’t begin with L?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 3:32am Scraps (scraps):

See, I’m not sure it does.... but I will mostly keep that to myself.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 3:57am pacific standard simon:

Wait a minute -- is this Television's Richard Lloyd? If so, why didn't he take up the vocals? Tom Verlaine sucked at singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 3:57am markr:

OH and Andrew if you're still out there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 3:59am markr:

Don't any women listen to this show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:00am Vincent Nifigance:

Love this Broken Social Scene album so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:02am pacific standard simon:

They know better than to stay up this late, or get up this early. Is what I'm guessing.... don't hit me, honey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:11am Vincent Nifigance:

That whole Superorganism story stinks to high heaven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:12am markr:

You're right. I made it up.
  Mon. 4/2/18 4:14am Grant:

B from Superorganism is the daughter of Robert Scott from The Clean and The Bats. He was telling me about them the other day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:15am pacific standard simon:

I like how Jonathon says "roanunner" sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:16am Scraps (scraps):

“stinks to high heaven” is one of the weirder phrases. who came up with that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:17am markr:

I love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:23am pacific standard simon:

And John Lydon gets so stressed when he can't remember the words on The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. Dude, you're supposed to make up your own words, if the song means anything to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:28am pacific standard simon:

They should have called the album There's A Griot Going On.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:37am pacific standard simon:

Heh heh, Lord Buckley....

Walking the BK Heights promenade. I can almost see Jersey City from here....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:40am pacific standard simon:

Hey, you could go to Gong via Bloomdido Bad DeGrasse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:43am pacific standard simon:

Wow, I grew up with this tune. I think my father saw him at a club and bought the record. After my parents divorced, it was one of the few records that remained that I liked. Miles Davis liked it too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:47am markr:

I understand Miles explicitly instructed Red Garland to play more like Ahmad Jamal, which must be terribly frustrating for a musician.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:49am pacific standard simon:

So good. Thank you, Mark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:50am markr:

I enjoyed hearing it...
  Mon. 4/2/18 4:54am exile-on-hicks-st:

That Jamal was a lovely companion to this slightly sleety, slightly blustery post-dream/ pre-dawn stroll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:55am markr:

Ah yes, I see now the slight precipitation that may or may not be the harbinger of worse weather...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 4:57am pacific standard simon:

We had a lot of the usual '50s and '60s soundtrack recordings around when I was a kid, but the records I remember hearing over and over again were Johnny Mathis, from my mom, and June Christy, from my dad. Says something, doesn't it? There was also a busted Charlie Byrd record that my mom threw at my dad. ;-)

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:07am Scraps (scraps):

That’s my favorite Phil Dick book, =A Scanner Darkly=. Very dark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:08am pacific standard simon:

The Ahmad Jamal was the one that I listened to over and again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:11am pacific standard simon:

I suspect that if I had been exposed to Miles doing "If i I Were A Bell", I would be even more addicted to that than I am now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:12am markr:

Johnny Mathis is coming to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center soon--how old is he, anyway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:16am Vincent Nifigance:

It's like, how dark can this scanner be, and the answer is...none. None more dark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:18am Vincent Nifigance:

Johnny Mathis' taste in music, shopping at Amoeba. Pretty interesting: m.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:21am pacific standard simon:

Can't say which Phil Dick book is my favorite, since it's been a couple decades or more since I've read any of them. I know it's not Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep, because I re-read it after Blade Runner, and liked the movie better. I might agree with you, Scraps, or I might go with Ubik. I do know that I've kept all that I've owned in the hope of rereading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:22am TDK60:

Morning. This Under The Pressure tune by W.O.D. is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:24am pacific standard simon:

Wait, I did re-read Eye In The Sky. That was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:25am markr:

Yeah, don't know why we don't seem to have many of their albums in our library, TDK--I think they're great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:29am pacific standard simon:

Johnny Mathis was born September 30, 1935, which makes him just one week older than my father. He will be 83 this coming autumn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:29am TDK60:

Snowy out there in the NYC/NJ metro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:35am pacific standard simon:

The Patty Waters was lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:36am TDK60:

Mr Thompson, artist who reminds us of the bittersweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:41am pacific standard simon:

@ TDK60 - I couldn't even relate to that until I broke up with my wife. Funny how you can be admitted to the inner circle so quickly.
Mon. 4/2/18 5:42am Dave in Vermont on the phone:

Wow. Haven’t heard Gram Parsons et al in a long time. So good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:43am pacific standard simon:

...and speaking of which...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:46am Scraps (scraps):

Ubik is great, and a little bit weird for a Dick book because it’s funny, not usually a strength for him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:51am markr:

These lyrics could have been written today: "Trigger-happy policemen..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:52am Scraps (scraps):

Aw, Steven Bochko died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:52am TDK60:

Like P.S. Simon said much earlier, my mom had Mathis reckkids around when we were kids. // Marvin's b.day,
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:55am fred:

Thanks Mark, I usually only catch the start of the show before leaving for work, but today is a holiday over here
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:56am pacific standard simon:

Real old timers hang out all night and sleep for a few hours in the morning.
  Mon. 4/2/18 5:56am jess:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:57am TDK60:

Emmy Lou's b.day too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:58am markr:

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road...see you next week, everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:58am Scraps (scraps):

He noted that on the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/2/18 5:59am pacific standard simon:

Now I have to re-read Ubik, because I'm sorta convinced that it was the first Dick novel that influenced a movie: the Carpenter and O'Bannon Dark Star
