Indian summer (n.)
"spell of warm, dry, hazy weather after the first frost" (happening anywhere from mid-September to nearly December, according to location), 1774, North American English (also used in eastern Canada), perhaps so called because it was first noted in regions then still inhabited by Indians, in the upper Mississippi valley west of the Appalachians, or because the Indians first described it to the Europeans. No evidence connects it with the color of fall leaves, or to a season of renewed Indian attacks on settlements due to renewed warm weather (a widespread explanation dating at least to the 1820s).

...except there's no need to say "gin Martini", since a Martini is a gin drink.

That thing people call a "vodka Martini"? Not a Martini. Just an abomination.

Farewell Mr. Hefner, may busty angels sing jazz in your grotto of clouds. Or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
Meghan:

While bartending, I always asked gin or vodka.... as most people drink some abomination of a martini.... There shouldn't be chocolate or fruit flavoring. Though my favorite is when people order a dirty martini and then say- It's so strong..... Yeah, it's pure alcohol. and yeah, it's salty. That is exactly what you ordered!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Michael 98145:

hey, gz'ette. that's probably gonna be -some- funeral, huh?
Avatar 12:50pm
Jeff:

Oh, I know - when you're actually doing bartending as a job, you need to give the people what they want. Since I'm an amateur cocktail-maker (see the base definition of amateur - for the love of it), I get to impose my opinions on whatever I serve.

I do remember one time I was at a party, a neighbor asked for a Martini, I made one, and he practically choked on it. "This has gin in it!"

I wasn't even trying to be a dick (that time). I'd totally forgotten that people like "vodka Martinis", and especially it hadn't occurred to me that the word "Martini", no modifier, might mean a vodka drink in anyone's mind.
Avatar 12:50pm
geezerette:

Yeah,Michael, let's crash it and count the blondes who love long walks on the beach and are astro-physicists in their spare time!
Avatar 12:51pm
Parq:

Not having any taste for gin, I am fine with vodka substituted for it in an otherwise properly made martini, gimlet, etc. What yanks my chain is this new trend of throwing in any ingredients that amuse you and calling it a martini as long as it's served in conical stemware.

mmmmmm, I used to hate gin, but then it became my summer go to. I think there are many types of gins, so you could easily find one that makes you happy.... (I personally am not a fan of Hendricks, for example)
Avatar 12:54pm
Jeff:

In a local bar a few nights ago, I heard someone order a "vodka soda".

What the everloving fuck is that about? That's something I (blessedly) had had no conception anyone might drink before that. Just slightly off-tasting alcoholic fizzy water - eww.

It it had been a proper cocktail bar, I believe it would have been entirely proper to 86 them for that order.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Michael 98145:

btw, this is great music. thanx.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Meghan:

Oh! I have an answer for that! That is a drink you order to be able to drink longer. I got a lot of those orders in the past. It's like drinking Bud Light all night. You don't get drunk as fast. At the Pixies, one of the women in our group ordered a tequila and soda. That was a new one for me.

Gin can be so bracing and refreshing. And the botanicals and the dry-Vermouth funk and some olive brine are a very particular good thing which makes drinking a cocktail glass full of cold practically-pure liquor a decent experience.

The music's so good that I'm listening even though the amp croaked last night!

Jeff:

Cool, @Parq. Note that I've found that people who've been convinced they hate gin often actually like the gin-and-lemon-juice cocktails I serve them. The gin botanicals are an essential part of the drink, making it more brisk, but aren't so far forward as to overwhelm.

A good Aviation does this well. If you aren't afeared of a little absinthe as well, check out the Corpse Reviver #2.

Coffee break to continue rant? Sadly, streaming is expensive, as well as archives! Think of it as the amount of shows on regular stream, along with alternate streams, podcasts, etc, going back to early 2000's..... That is a lot of data!
