re: business strategy
The ol' Pareto Principle usually always applies -- 80% of your revenue comes from the 20% of your customers. In regard to customer relationships, most business ended up taking all their cues from the airline industry and their frequent-flyer programs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 3/4/17 11:42am JakeGould:

To be fair, “The Martian” does not fall into that category. So hey.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 11:48am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My advice to Hollywood - esp. the SciFi makers: Take some of that $400mil - & hire *one* good starving Writer. Even truly great Directors too often lack a decent Writer. SciFi became ActionAdventure - a vaild Genre of its' own - but not about Ideas. It's Cops & Guns & ArmyRecruitment Ads in Space. Since there's now literally more FutureShock in one's plam device than one can comprehend - & the streets & industries have indeed become a survival epic - perhaps this is understandable...
I adopted the term 'GuitarPop' for when the drummer is maybe not hyped enuff to call it 'PowerPop' ?...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 11:49am Mike Sin:

Many tracks from that 1968 LP seem to have that Paul Revere and the Raiders approach after some of the country influences seeped in.

Thanks. Two years ago, I found on line and tracked down a sax player who had busked with Jimi in Boston and/or NYC. They split up because the sax guy had a family and didn't want to go out of town with Jimi. In the interim, said sax player had addiction and spent time in jail. Now, a survivor, he plays small gigs around NYC. Saw him in a small dive in NJ, where he played along to tracks, with his wife running the equipment. He had great sound and facility - one could see why he and Jimi played together.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 3/4/17 12:38pm JakeGould:

@FrankAbove: Oh, I don’t deny that! Those first four albums are amazing! But past those I really can live without their attempts at pop-metal and such.
Avatar Sat. 3/4/17 12:38pm glenn:

personally, i would rather drink my own blood than come within five miles of a sting concert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:39pm Frank Above:

I think the albums up to Pleasant Dreams are essential. I still like the ones after that, but it could be argued that they aren't nearly as important or good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 3/4/17 12:39pm JakeGould:

@glenn: My first concert was Sting. “Dream of the Blue Turtles” at Radio City. That was when you might convince yourself he was still passable.
Avatar Sat. 3/4/17 12:40pm glenn:

my first concert was b.b. king. a bird pooped on my head.
Avatar Sat. 3/4/17 12:41pm Listener Baby:

Baby.. We would be incorrect if we didn't include Los Lobos on that short list of the best we have.
Avatar Sat. 3/4/17 12:41pm glenn:

an outdoors concert, i should mention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 3/4/17 12:41pm JakeGould:

Speaking of Joan Jett… First three albums with some extra weight on that first album.

RIGHT ON, yes, you can be beautiful and old
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:41pm ChrisB.:

Further to the meet & greet experience: go see a band you like in a small venue. Chances are they're hanging around and would be glad to make your acquaintance.
Avatar Sat. 3/4/17 12:41pm glenn:

los lobos is great, and also the loudest band i've ever seen.
  Sat. 3/4/17 12:42pm Clarke:

love me some early lobos; however, they are pretty much a jam band these dayz - ugh.

Cheap Trick should at least be in the discussion, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 3/4/17 12:43pm JakeGould:

@FrankAbove: What? Of what point in their discography you can forget them?
Avatar Sat. 3/4/17 12:43pm Michael Shelley:

Frank - did you watch that Live At Drylls House?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 3/4/17 12:44pm JakeGould:

@MichaelShelley: To be fair, I’ve seen a lot of bad plastic surgery on people who want to defy age and Joan Jett seems like she’s just overly made-up and not overly cut-up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:45pm Frank Above:

Jake: Are we still talking Ramones or Cheap Trick?
  Sat. 3/4/17 12:45pm DG:

Los Lobos are definitely one of the great America bands. Saw them live many times; their version of "Crossroads" will make you think you're listneing to Cream. Then they'll do a traditional norteno, then a moody, slower piece, then a blues. Versatile & still great. (You listening, Hall of Fame?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 3/4/17 12:45pm JakeGould:

@FrankAbove: Cheap Trick. I think? Did Bun E. Carlos get a facelift?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:46pm Frank Above:

Michael: whose performance?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:46pm Frank Above:

Michael: Actually, it doesn't matter. I haven's seen any Daryl's House performances in a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

What wigs me out is when people get the facelift & they all look the same - & not like themselves. Then - I suppose if it's successful, we might not even notice...

Jake: The first 5 albums are essential. After that it gets spotty. But I think they're in the conversation due to their longevity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:48pm Frank Above:

Thanks Michael!
  Sat. 3/4/17 12:49pm DG:

And yeah, the latter Ramones albums aren't as good, but they actually branched out beyond the 3-chord short songs, sometimes successfully. Case in point: "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" is great (as is much of "Animal Boy"), "Halfway to Sanity" too. Don't know that much after that, but the covers album ("Acid Eaters") is certainly not as good as it could have been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:51pm Frank Above:

Jake: To clarify, I put "Budokan" in the 5 essential list. In fact, it might be their most significant, because the true spirit of Cheap Trick is captured in their live performances. I don't think the studio recordings quite do them justice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Quoth Someone: Having seen how much you can take out & still be Rawk'n'Roll - TheRamones now see how much you can put back in & still be TheRamones.
  Sat. 3/4/17 12:53pm Clarke:

i would say that Cheap Trick has made more consistent product than any other and stayed more true to their original sound than any other - aside from Beach Boys. speaking of demo's - anyone heard any of the Red Ant Demos from Cheap Trick?!? wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:54pm Frank Above:

Thanks for the tip, Clarke. I'll check out those CT demos.
  Sat. 3/4/17 12:55pm Clarke:

oh man - frank!! there is some guy sharing the files online for red ant stuff...
Avatar Sat. 3/4/17 12:55pm Listener Baby:

If you want to talk consistent. Los Lobos leads the pack? 35 years, no bad albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hm - maybe CheapTrick was *too* into JeffLynne...
  Sat. 3/4/17 12:56pm Clarke:

uhhh - i haven't heard any lobos of late that made me want to buy their product.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 3/4/17 12:56pm Frank Above:

Clarke, I'll look it up. I've got some homework to do after Michael's show, so I'll add it to my list.

i saw Lobos this past summer and walked out

Regarding "Move Over and Let Me Dance (pt 1)," Michael, how did you get the guitar so out in front in the mix like that? All I could find on Youtube, the 45s, were versions with Jimi buried so back you could barely hear his playing. Never heard that song before, so a thank-you.
