There's a signal processing conference in NOLA soon, and a few coworkers will be going. Any recommendation for a Jazz-loving, multiracial but socially clueless group of scientists?
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 9:24am Jeff Golick:

I see you there, @JtotheK! G'morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 9:24am annie:

check out WWOZ, the blues and jazz station, they have tons of suggestions. you'll never be bored in the crescent city
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 9:26am northguineahills:

I have a friend, who's Japanese gf was detained at LAX. She had a student visa (grad school), but after they went through her phone, they found she had been working (at a NYC gallery), So, she had to buy a ticket back to Japan and told she couldn't return for 5 years. We already got an immigration lawyer on the case.

(My wife is going her second immigration interview process right now since we got married, and she has a lawyer).
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 9:29am Jeff Golick:

Horrifying story, @northguineahills. All too typical, as well. (Hiya.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 9:33am fred:

@NGH: I hope she'll be back soon. That restriction is absurd: students working to pay for tuition and bills is supposed to be part of the "American story". And now it's a crime?
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 9:36am Jeff Golick:

@annie: that's a great suggestion re WWOZ. They're online, @fred! I've only been to NOLA once, so I'm not your go-to for suggestions.
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 9:38am Jeff Golick:

I'll be curious to hear what French visitors to NOLA think of the food there, @fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 9:40am northguineahills:

I can't spell or grammar Sunday mornings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 9:41am fred:

@Jeff: I was more putting the question out there for listeners. Not sure that conference will help with that: only one of the researchers is French

Jeff quick non committal greeting as I will not be attending any media functions in the foreseeable future.

My pact would be to sing like Frank Sinatra in 1955/56.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 9:43am northguineahills:

Well, my wife, when she was in grad school, made sure she didn't work, as she saved up a lot of money. I'm a citizen, came to NYC for grad school w/ over $30K, and that evaporated quickly. I was Teaching, working, and djing, and it still wasn't enough.

The visa semantics today are insane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 9:43am JtotheK:

Really enjoyed that set, Jeff! Gonna have to seek out that Roedelius LP.
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 9:45am Gary:

Soul Jazz! Is it crazy to want to do a whole show of Soul Jazz recordings? I think they began in 1992, which would make them, what? 25 years old this year?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 9:45am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

ngh - can I share your 9:26 on fb - w/ context but w/out names? I think it communicates what's happening.

@Gary: that would be a great show to celebrate a great label

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 9:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Irene Trudell did a well-informed & beautiful tribute to Larry Coryell - maybe focussing more on early work. My take after that is he makes an important comparison/contrast to McLaughlin - also technically stunning, but perhaps straighter to the feeling, w/ broad inspirations across genres (reportedly seeing Hendrix specifically turned him around)...
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 9:51am Jeff Golick:

@Brian in UK: that all checks out.
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 9:52am Jeff Golick:

  Sun. 2/26/17 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

Mr Coryell has yet to tickle my fancy. Jazz guitar has never been in my sweet spot. The outer it gets, the inner I dig it. Generally speaking.
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 10:03am Jeff Golick:

Gotta go stack the Triscuits. Sweet sounds, Brother JG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 10:09am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Doug: As weary as I may get of the Guitarcentric world...& by rights we should all be thoroughly Over It given how much Guitar there's been...I can't shake my love of it & I just respond. I think Jazz is Horn music - Banjos were allowed to keep rhythm - & the Electric Guitar has been eyed suspiciously & been kept on Probabtion...: keep yer WesMontgomery tone & don't act up over there...tho' by now the BillFrissells & such have probably won - it's taken this long...Anyhow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 10:09am fred:

Well, I'm not saying it was the first time I heard it, but it was the first time it got through and I dropped everything and paid exclusive attention to it. I think it's what really counts, and these are easy to remember
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 10:10am Jeff Golick:

Bye, @Doug! Stack 'em high!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 10:49am fred:

Once, years ago, I had a job interview with a bottle of Port Ellen on the table. The bottle was drained, and I took the job

If we wanted to be Yogis & take *decades* - then *maybe* we'd be able to work the control board of our own brains/minds. Not having taken that option - I enjoy moderate alkyhol to relax & be in the moment. & conversely too much caffeine to not fall into the abyss of the moment & to become active. That's more of an addiction, really. LSD (long ago) just stopped teaching me, or being enjoyable.

@Doug: Will the drummer stream DJs get go-hosts this year? I love the stream, but it kinda sounds like business as usual without them
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/26/17 11:38am doctorjazz:

Blind Faith cover?
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 11:38am Jeff Golick:

I can try to answer that, @fred. Basically, only those shows taking place at WFMU (and D:O Radio will move to FMU for our marathon shows) will have live, on-air co-hosts. Remote shows unable to make the trek will have "virtual co-hosts" on the playlists, but not on air.

@doc: HNIA did a whole Marion Brown tribute record, too.

@Jeff: thanks for the info. Looks like I won't pledge to your show this year, but don't take it as a diss. I would if I had unlimited funds. I don't, and I plan to support newer shows

YES LOU RAWLS!

Appreciate your letting me know, @fred, and it all goes to the same place, ultimately.

@doctorjazz: The album is "Stars on E.S.P".

OK off to Discogs I go (this show is expensive :) )

@Jeff: I just found that album on Spotify.

Warren Defever wanted to do a Detroit booty bass record back in 2000. I talked to him after a show, and he said he couldn't find a record label to release it. The indie and booty bass labels were so confused, but the booty bass artists were on board, and he did record it.
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 11:56am Jeff Golick:

That's a nutty story, @ngh.

Iggy's great solo oeuvre. I believe we has now had Slash on D.O. !

Thanks Jeff for making Sundays sane for me in the nuthouse that is F-L-A. Nothing makes sense down here.

Aw, the closing theme.
What a great show that was.
Thanks Jeff and bye all

It's really important to me to welcome newer voices to the station
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/26/17 12:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I characterize Cali as a series of Theme Parks - esp. SoCal. Or - a movie set w/out Direction. Some people love FL (Iggy does) - but I imagine it's easy to get lost there.
Love & Rockets e'erybody.
Avatar Sun. 2/26/17 12:03pm Jeff Golick:

@fred: YES, that's a wonderful thing to do. (I still of course feel new, next to Doug and some of the others, but...) That anyone gives to the station is a lovely and miraculous thing.
