Listener comments!

Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 11:17am Tony Coulter:

Welp, despite what I said last Tuesday, I won't be playing 7" records today — Singles Going Steady is next week, not this week! SO, instead it's ... more French stuff! The records I didn't get to for reasons of time, not quality....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 11:21am Jeff Golick:

This listener, who missed the prior two weeks due to work-related reasons, is pleased with the change.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 11:25am Tony Coulter:

Heya, This Listener ... I mean, Jeff G!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 11:32am Jeff Golick:

Bonjour!
  Tue. 10/18/16 11:58am Dean:

Delired Cameleon Family, a prog gem.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 11:59am Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Dean!

The film it's a soundtrack for is pretty great too....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 12:00pm Carmichael:

Heya Tony, would they call this "Frog Rock", kinda like Kraut Rock? Or does that cross the rudeness line?
  Tue. 10/18/16 12:01pm JtotheK:

Good Day Tony, Everyone.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:01pm βrian:

Grenouille Grunge?
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Carmichael, JtotheK, & βrian!!

I'm callin' it Frogrock -- with the full knowledge that that's a totally stupid name (which no one uses, btw).
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:06pm Kay:

I think the name's got legs...froglegs, that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 12:06pm listener james from westwood:

Good Tuesday, Tony and all!

Frogrock! That's great. Hi, Tony! I can listen intermittently today, and am glad for those moments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 12:10pm Jeff Golick:

This Plat du Jour is le shite.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Wendy! Glad you're here. Did you remember to bring the Camembert?
Avatar    Tue. 10/18/16 12:14pm V Priceless:

Hey TC!
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, VP!
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:17pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Tony, I did not bring the camembert, but I have some Jasper Hill Alpha Tolman in my desk. Sometimes I keep cheese in my desk here in the newsroom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 12:17pm northguineahills:

ahhhh, Melody!
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Sir NGH!
  Tue. 10/18/16 12:22pm βrian:

Jasper Hill makes beautiful cheese. Some of it you have to eat with a spoon.

How about "Rock Rauque"? Eh, maybe not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

Ah, Serge. Galuoises smoke is slowly filling my room.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 12:33pm Jeff Golick:

There are some good Steve Lacy albums on the Saravah label.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:34pm Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff Golick: Playing three weeks of this stuff is helping my French pronunciation a bit, I think. I'm actually painfully aware of how bad it's gotten compared to when I was a kid when I could actually speak French (my parents sent me to a bilingual school).
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:34pm Tony Coulter:

Almost all my favorite Lacy albums are on Saravah....
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:37pm βrian:

@Tony: Helene Neu has a great youtube series on pronunciation: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, βrian. Actually, it's not so much that I need pronunciation pointers as that my mouth can no longer form the sounds my brain knows it should be forming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 12:41pm Jeff Golick:

"my mouth can no longer form the sounds my brain knows it should be forming" -- only replace "mouth" with "brain," and "sounds" with "thoughts"

  Tue. 10/18/16 12:49pm George:

Good Day Tony, Everyone.Greetings from Greece
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, George!
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:52pm Tony Coulter:

@ JeffG: Never went by "Cool-Tear," no -- but I will say that before Anne Coulter emerged from her rathole it was far more common for people to mispronounce my name. I do have that to thank for....
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

"thank her for"....
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:54pm Tony Coulter:

And by the way, Coulter is not a French name -- it's Scottish.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 12:57pm Tony Coulter:

It's the name of a Scottish town -- apparently pronounce "Cooter" by ye olde inhabitants.
  Tue. 10/18/16 12:58pm Dean:

Folks mispronounced Coulter? Weird. But then I had high school mates with that name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 12:58pm Jeff Golick:

Ah! Good to know one's name origin.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hate to bring this up, but: No one's pledging! We need some help here folks! Please pitch in if you can!!
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:21pm Tony Coulter:

Always a conversation killer -- but you know ... we need your help to keep on chooglin' for another six months.....

Good evening to everybody from Greece....Mr Coulter I am very thankful for the great music moments today and all these years ...
Thank you for sharing your music wisdom with us...

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 10/18/16 1:25pm Guido from Cologne:

Germany also here!
great set!
  Tue. 10/18/16 1:25pm Dean:

Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:26pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Guido! Thanks!!
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:30pm βrian:

I heard the crowd at Trump rallies were turning on folks if they spoke using the subjunctive ... so be careful.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:34pm Tony Coulter:

OK -- I'm grabbing some coffee during this longish track. Hope to see some new pledges when I get back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 1:35pm Jeff Golick:

@βrian: also if one acknowledges one's subjectivity
  Tue. 10/18/16 1:36pm Dean:

I should of went to a Trump rally.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:37pm βrian:

@Dean: There you go.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

I'm back (I swig my coffee quickly).
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:39pm βrian:

Coffee chug.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:45pm Mayuko:

I'm late! But listening now. Hello Tony and all.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:47pm βrian:

How shimmers the lucre, Tony? Is it trickling in?
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mayuko! Nice to see you here!
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: The lucre is most definitely not shimmering -- in fact, it's not coming in much at all and I and the station are now way behind goal-wise. Something must be blocking the pipes. WE NEED PLEDGES to, um, unblock our pipes and get the cash flowing again....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 10/18/16 1:54pm Guido from Cologne:

How many Zheul-groups were there?
Any idea?
All connecxted with the mothership?
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:56pm βrian:

I can't help but think it's harder, this being an election year. I dunno.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

@ Guido: There are MANY Zeuhl (or partially Zeuhl) groups, some with no connection to Magma. Off the top of my head I'd say there are at least 30.....
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 1:57pm Tony Coulter:

... that's including groups from other countries and more recent outfits....
Avatar    Tue. 10/18/16 1:58pm V Priceless:

just anted-up, Tony! Thanx for all this great zany music!
  Tue. 10/18/16 1:58pm Dean:

Dang, I gave to this show and to several others. I will try to do so again before month-end.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:01pm βrian:

If only Bernie would stump a little for WFMU ...
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Dean! I am, of course, not trying to guilt-trip anybody -- especially those who already gave. Just hoping this silent marathon thing picks up steam sometime soon -- we really do need your support to keep things running -- and that most certainly includes the streams, which are expensive to maintain.
  Tue. 10/18/16 2:04pm Dean:

It's part guilt, part survival instinct.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:05pm βrian:

The Jacobins will come for the transmitters first ...
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:05pm Tony Coulter:

BIG THANKS, VP!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:09pm Cecile:

hi, were Cassiber French, and did you play them already?
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

Hi. Cecile! Nope, Cassiber were German ... plus one English gent: Chris Cutler (of Henry Cow, Recommended Records, etc)
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

Saw 'em in New York ages ago, btw -- wuz great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:11pm Cecile:

Oh, dang. I guess I just like an excuse to ask someone to play Cassiber. But did you play Etron Fou already?
  Tue. 10/18/16 2:11pm Dean:

Shylock were a great French band, except weren't they Swiss?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:12pm Cecile:

I was blown away by the record. I was in the middle of my rap/SST days when I reviewed it for WCBN, and it still blew me away. I should buy it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:14pm Cecile:

In other news, I did my Ancestry DNA test, and am not directly very French at all, which I suspected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:15pm Cecile:

Mostly English-Irish of all things!
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:16pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Yeah, Shylock were great -- and real frogs I think, not Swiss. There are so many great French '70s bands I haven't gotten to that I could easily do a Part 4 of this special ... but I won't because ... well, come on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:16pm Cecile:

And 2% Finn.
  Tue. 10/18/16 2:20pm Dean:

I guess so. Gialorgues is in France. Not sure why I've thought Swiss all these years. Maybe it's because I thought they recorded the album in Switzerland. Maybe it's because the record has a hole in it, like the cheese.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:24pm Tony Coulter:

This show's pledge-o-meter has not gone up AT ALL since noon. France must be hanging its head in shame. I REALLY need to get some pledges coming in!!! Please help out, if you can -- any amount helps and will be greatly appreciated!
Avatar    Tue. 10/18/16 2:27pm V Priceless:

@ Cecile: did you notice Diane reached her silent fund-raising goal? Strong show of Kamikaze solidarity! Ha!

@ Tony: I've noticed the pledge meter not updating in 'real time', like it used to in the past, at least from the listener end of things! I just pledged about 15 minutes ago - no change!
  Tue. 10/18/16 2:29pm Dean:

I share VP's observation. I donated to Doug's show Friday and the o-meter didn't budge for quite a while. Of course, it's possible it wasn't calibrated to register my contribution, but it has subsequently jumped a percentage point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:30pm Cecile:

No, I didn't. Good for her! Her going off the air has contributed to my crappy autumn mood. I know she'll be back. But right now, I'm sulking.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:31pm Tony Coulter:

@ V Priceless: Yeah, I've noticed my pledge-o-meter not going up after people say they've just made pledges. Possibly they are not actually going to my show due to some programming bug, or perhaps, as you say, there is a delay. Either way, a pledge is a pledge! (By the way, I can't see who's pledging, so I can't check.)
  Tue. 10/18/16 2:32pm βrian:

Prière de verser une petite somme au bénéfice de cette éxperience freeform — WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:32pm Cecile:

I did make sure to earmark part of my small pledge to her show!

I just have to wait until the end of the month just in case someone in my family or circle of friends gets sick or passes. No one should, but I never expected a lot of stuff to happen this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:32pm Jeff Golick:

In light of the fact that you cannot see who has pledged, and that the pledge-o-meter doesn't move in real time, allow me to mention that I have just contributed a bazonkatillion dollars to the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:35pm Jeff Golick:

Do you think people yelled "Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuc" as his shows.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:35pm Tony Coulter:

Ha, Jeff! We will rename the station in your honor. WFMU: Go Lick a Radio
  Tue. 10/18/16 2:35pm βrian:

They say you can't feel a tsunami moving beneath your feet at sea, so perhaps Jeff is onto something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:36pm Jeff Golick:

...just make sure it's unplugged first.
Avatar    Tue. 10/18/16 2:37pm V Priceless:

  Tue. 10/18/16 2:43pm Dean:

Ferrari's kinda sorta Italian, too, no?
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:43pm Tony Coulter:

Not at all -- just the name.
  Tue. 10/18/16 2:44pm Dean:

What's in a name? Speaking of Italians...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:44pm Jeff Golick:

Did you consider any Henri Texier, @Tony, or not really prog?
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:46pm Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff G: I've been slipping in jazz here and there, so he would certainly fit. There just isn't enough time for everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:47pm Jeff Golick:

C'est vraiment vrai.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:48pm Tony Coulter:

One thing about France in the '70s is that the borders between rock, jazz and experimental music were pretty porous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:49pm Jeff Golick:

Slippery...like a...a...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/18/16 2:50pm northguineahills:

  Tue. 10/18/16 2:50pm Dean:

Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:51pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Yep!
Avatar    Tue. 10/18/16 2:55pm V Priceless:

thanks, Tony!
  Tue. 10/18/16 2:55pm Dean:

Flame Dream is definitely a Swiss prog band. Used to hang with the American guitarist they hired in the '70s from the suburbs east of Los Angeles. Last I heard he's now leading a reggae band, go figure.
Avatar Tue. 10/18/16 2:55pm Tony Coulter:

beautiful show!
thanks so much!
pledges will come ...
... we PayPal-pledgers must take the way-around since the option does not exist in the web-form. That's propably why the running is lame.
