Hello mauri, we are getting five seasons in one day here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 9:34am annie:

not that there's anything wrong with it, there's a melancholy to the show so far. bittersweet
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 9:35am Brian in UK:

Joe, ever heard California 99 by Jimmie Haskell, strange old article, big foldout cover with a spoken story and kindof soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 9:36am mauri:

Brianinuk here it suddenly plummeted to 11C. It's raining all day too.
these songs makes me think of driving up north in autumn cold. love this kind of romantism.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 9:39am sphere:

hey there. was this guy in Chicago the band?
Avatar Mon. 8/29/16 9:39am Joe McG:

@sphere: Yeah, that's the fella.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 9:40am melinda:

I smell a bit of autumn melancholy, too, and I like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 9:41am sphere:

I was a teenage Chicago fan, so this voice evokes a lot of memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 9:43am Guido from Cologne:

Jimmi Haskell:
is also famous as an arranger for classics like "bridge over Troubled water" and "ode to Billie Joe". And Rex's farewell-tune is Haskell's "Rockin' The Orbit" from 1958 LP "Count Down".

I find certain arranger personalities interesting and they're much too often in the shadow of producer's personalities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 9:44am mauri:

no autumn tints nor smells yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 9:44am Nardo:

In regards to Electra Glide in Blue: "The soundtrack album also included a four-page fold-out poster of Robert Blake standing beside his cycle on a bluff overlooking Monument Valley." Oooh boy!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 9:46am Brian in UK:

Robert Blake has one of those red/green air fresheners on his Harley. Bonkers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 9:47am Brian in UK:

@Guido bit like Bill Szymczyk, had to cut and paste that!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 9:48am sphere:

Chicago's Terry Kath was also a very good guitarist who had avant tendencies. See "Free Form Guitar," which takes up one side of their debut 2LP set. Sharrock and Hendrix would have been pleased.

Morning, folks. Thanks for reminding me of Paris, Texas, Joe. I really need to see that movie again. It was all about mood and you could really feel the lonesomeness of the two main characters which was also reflected in the wide angle shots of the dusty old town.
Avatar Mon. 8/29/16 10:01am βrian:

@pantz: My GF showed me that film and told me *nothing* about it beforehand. (As it should be.) I was floored.

I watched The Naked Gun: 33-1/3 over the weekend. I read that the original subtitle was to be "For the Record," but the producers figured too few people would get the joke so they gave it "The Final Insult" instead.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 10:58am Jeff:

Which it still is, but now I'm prepared to celebrate that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:19am Tim 07030:

I believe this is the last song Sinatra ever recorded for Capitol.
Avatar Mon. 8/29/16 11:20am Joe McG:

@Tim: Wow, I didn't know that. I may play Frank, not sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 11:21am annie:

sure, play frankie
Avatar Mon. 8/29/16 11:22am Joe McG:

OK, Annie, I will.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 11:24am annie:

anyone remember back in the 70(?) a singing sensation of john mccormick? he had some weepy songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:24am Tim 07030:

Yeah, his last sessions for Capitol overlapped with his first sessions for Reprise, he had to fulfill his Capitol contract, and I seem to recall reading in the Capitol box set that "I Got A Right..." was the last thing he recorded. He doesn't exactly give it his all.
  Mon. 8/29/16 11:25am SeanG:

it was Steve Marriott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:25am fred:

I love these 30's records. Gene Austin sounds much more recent that the previous songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 11:26am ChrisB.:

Buck up, Joe. Prosperity is just around the corner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:27am Jeff:

@ChrisB: I sure hope so!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:33am Jeff:

Nice. Last two words of Blue Prelude are the title of the next song by Francis A.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:33am Brian in UK:

Cottage For Sale, In The Wee Small Hours and this one. Wonderful. Riddle and Jenkins.

MD - Love the Surface Noise on 78s
Avatar Mon. 8/29/16 11:35am Joe McG:

@Jeff: "Blue Prelude" is kind of the earlier version of "Good-bye," both written by Gordon Jenkins. What a song, in any version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:35am fred:

I get a lot of grief from saying I like Frank Sinatra and Dolly Parton
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 11:35am annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 11:36am Lewis:

@fred - just put on another fmu t-shirt and know in your heart that you actually think about the music you listen to and like...
Avatar    Mon. 8/29/16 11:36am Sem Chumbo:

@fred: I always like to think that its none of my business what other people think of the music I like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:38am Brian in UK:

@fred it says less about them than you.

One of the few days I get to hear Avant Ghetto live and the man is off today. Bah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:40am MD:

My Dad, as a young Man, had seen Billie live enough that he got to know her and would say hello.
He even would buy her a drink now and then. To transfer all his old 78's was at times quite moving...I MEAN THESE WERE MY POP'S RECORDS! WE ALL KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS AND FEELS LIKE!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:41am Brian in UK:

@MD take this tissue my friend, no really.
Avatar Mon. 8/29/16 11:42am Mayuko:

@Lewis: I have so many WFMU T-shirts that someone once sent me snail mail with WFMU instead of my name, and I did get it
Avatar Mon. 8/29/16 11:43am Joe McG:

@MD: Wow, MD, amazing story. @Mayuko! This is maybe just the opposite of your happy summer show from Saturday. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/29/16 11:43am annie:

best thing to hit the airwaves?? radio
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:44am Jeff:

@MD: True. And so amazing that he had a saying-hello-and-sometimes-drink-buying relationship with Billie Holiday!

Apologies for the audio-nerdery, but please tell me that if you're taking the trouble to record all those records, you're recording in some lossless format (FLAC or WAV or AIFF or ALAC or the like)! The worst case would be MP3, which has terrible trouble with sharp impulses (like, you know, surface noise on records).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 8/29/16 11:44am Brian in UK:

Great show, Joe. Chin up everyone and keep smiling.
Avatar Mon. 8/29/16 11:45am Joe McG:

I think its a melancholy time of year. Summer ending. This day sucks for me the last two years . Lost my ma 2 years ago this time and got wiped out on my bike by a car a year ago today. Made me wanna hibernate but said nahhh . So far so good today. Nice show Joe.

Joe, it's pronounced Tony KOS-ZIN-ECK
  Tue. 8/30/16 6:02pm Joe McG:

Thanks, Mark. I had no bloody idea how to say his name.
Thu. 9/1/16 5:31pm Mark in Toronto:

While he was born in England, he is/was Canadian and lived in Toronto. He had local airplay (probably a Can Con thing) in the '70s and had a hit with "All Things Come From God"
