saw them open for Einsturzende Neubaten in '85. Keith Brammer from Die Kreuzen was in that band, I think.

Heya, Cecile, Listener James, & JtotheK!!

he had decidedly non-hardcore long hair and was wearing ballet slippers, IIRC

Tony Coulter:

Right you are, Cecile! ('Bout KB, I mean.)
Avatar 12:08pm
Cecile:

I saw him a few years back with Die Kreuzen. Having the time of his life, and he was still a longhair.

Can't say why, exactly, but Venice seems like an unlikely place for an outfit like Gi-Napajo to come from.
Avatar 12:20pm
Tony Coulter:

Venice, Italy, that is!

they love them some Frank Zappa in Italy.

Avatar 12:32pm

@ Cecile: Yep, there are two Orthotonics-ers: Paul Watson and Pippin Barnett
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Henry Cow also very popular in Italy (well, at least relative to other countries!). When they did the reunion shows for Lindsay Cooper recently, there were two in England and one there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

...and Richard Sinclair (Caravan) moved out there some years ago, where he appears to be treated with huge reverence.
Avatar 12:37pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Canterbury wood-elf!! Many, many moons ago I saw a Henry Cow concert poster on wall in Rome. Wish I could have snagged the thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

That may have been the concert they did in Rome with Wyatt in '75. One of his last live appearances. I'd also love a copy of that poster!
Avatar 12:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Think it must have been a bit after that when I saw the thing -- but, of course, it could have been an old poster!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Yeah, looking at this, it could have been as late as '78:
calyx.perso.neuf.fr...
(more amazingly detailed info from the Calyx site)
Avatar 12:53pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, 1978 is much more likely. I discovered HC around 1977 or so, when I was in high school. They were my favorite band for a while there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

This is sounding rather Cow just now...
Avatar 12:59pm
Tony Coulter:

There is a hint of Canterbury/Cow type sounds in there, for sure....

Pretty cool favourite band for a high school kid! I was still stuck on Floyd, Yes and Genesis...

Just tuned in at end of side A of FAFOOT. Swell stuff.

Care to reveal the album cover?

Picked up an "'O' Band" 12" yesterday for a song. Wish I had their entire catalog.
Avatar 1:05pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Dean!

Here is today's mystery LP, which is from Proof of Utah: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

There was a cheerful Anglo-American student punk band called "Headcleaner" here in Canterbury when I was at university in the late 80s. They released an eponymous tape, to sow confusion in purchasers' cassette shelves (remember those?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Great band name, "Proof of Utah". What's the mystery?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
listener james from westwood:

What I was lacking, was the Tape Hiss! I'm saved!
  1:07pm
Dean:

The mystery is the background on which Tony displayed the cassettes. It's our job to guess the LP.

There was in Southern California an AM Christian talk show hosted by a Brother Paul very similar to these clips. I listened to it religiously, and I miss it. The theme song was Loggins & Messina's "Peace of Mind."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

"listened to it religiously"
and non-religiously too, yes?
: )
  1:15pm
Dean:

Indeed, C w-e.
  1:33pm
Dean:

I win today's award for being most boring and predictable. My comment above about the AM radio show prompted me to search every server on the web using a tool called Google for evidence of the show. Just over a year ago, this very show, I commented at 2:24 p.m.: https://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/58831
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
listener james from westwood:

Seeing "short-term memory" and heads needing cleaning reminds me of those tape drives some computers of the day still used for loading programs into RAM. The speed of that process is one of the reasons I check myself when, say, a file takes a "long" time to download.
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Perhaps you should make the same comment once a year, at exactly the same time. Make it a tradition.
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: The name of this cassette reminded me it was time to to clean my cassette deck's tape heads.
Avatar 1:37pm
Cecile:

only mystery with proof of Utah is why all their stuff hasn't been reissued. Crazy talented guys. I think some of them had barely gotten out of high school when their first record came out. I interviewed them and saw them once. They were incredibly fun and nice and a great live act.
  1:38pm
Dean:

@Tony: Happy to bring boredom and predictability to tradition!

@ljfw: I first learned programming on a Wang 2200, c.1976. I know exactly what you mean.
Avatar 1:39pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: I'm envious. I would have loved to see Proof of Utah live.
  1:40pm
Dean:

Re: Proof of Utah -- Is the name a dig against the LDS church? Is it "proof" as in ABV?
Avatar 1:42pm
Cecile:

back in the day, when people first started yelling "free bird" they were among the only people IME to actually do it, and they did an incredible, hilarious version.

I dunno, dean. I think they were goofing around with names.
Avatar 1:43pm
Tony Coulter:

"Look out, it's the mocker. Oh no, not the mocker."
  1:45pm
Dean:

Zeke will sometimes try to kickstart a half-hearted "Free Bird" when the crowd calls for the song.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
JtotheK:

What's the mocker wear for an outfit? (Presume: Turtleneck.)
  1:50pm
Dean:

I bought stereo equipment from a guy who was briefly in Boy Dirt Car. He's now an architect, and he has designed covers for the Okka label.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm

I look forward to this tape! It's hometown history for me, not familiar with the group.

Thanks Cecile! I have a reissue Die Kreuzen ep, and have heard them on area college radio in the past - but I'm very much a novice on this era/scene. (Well, a novice on most eras/scenes, actually... but happy to learn!)

Last night my kids set up their train set, a tiny oval layout, and let it run for something like fifteen minutes. I pulled out Chris Watson's "El Tren Fantasma" to play along with it. The mix was great.
Avatar 2:30pm

Tony, they started hardcore, but moved more to a Birthday-Party-like noisy rock 'n' roll. Also, their hardcore has some of the best, pure smart crazy noisy guitar riffs in it.

I first heard Die Kreuzen when Jello Biafra guested on someone's show on kboo and played them, calling them the most severe, technical hardcore bands he'd ever heard.
I immediately went out and bought it.
