Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I so sucked at Pong. Still do. I like Galaga and Centipede. Suck at them, too. Obviously have no hand eye coordination. Kids these days...
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:05pm still b/p:

Pong always reminds me of playing it in a Mister Donut. Ya got some fancy early adopters with it in their home there.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:08pm northguineahills:

My parents still had a Pong game system, and I remember playing it when I was 3-4 years old.
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:10pm Sarah N:

Helloooo all. Not a Burl fan Doug?
All this talk of Pong makes me want to play Ping Pong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 12:10pm Uncle Michael:

The only thing I did not know was what form Doug's anti-Burl expression would take!

I remember when pong came out. I never had the coordination to play real ping pong and tennis rackets were too heavy for me when I was a kid, but pong came out, it was one game that I was not worse than everyone else at.

RIP Budy Emmons. Care to school us a little on him Lane S?
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:23pm ndbob:

glorious weather here too
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:23pm Lane Steelpicker:

Buddy was the biggest thing ever in the pedal steel. He took a rough hewn machine from Paul Bigsby and showed the world how to make them. Then he showed us all how to play it
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:24pm Lane Steelpicker:

Judy Collins "Someday Soon"? Buddy.
Nancy Sinatra's country album? Buddy.
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:27pm Lane Steelpicker:

Speaking of film, Buddy did a cool cover of Once Upon a Time In the West.
He also did a multitrack all-steel version of Pachelbel's Canon in D. I used it in my wedding last year as the processional.
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:28pm Lane Steelpicker:

The man was so important, an honest biography looks like a hagiography.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Righteous. Thx Man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:29pm Holly in NC:

Allan Sherman's version: You're Getting to Be A Rabbit With Me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 12:31pm Uncle Michael:

The Canon is from the album I mentioned on mic.
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:31pm Lane Steelpicker:

When I say he taught the world how to make them, he was half of Sho-Bud (Shot Jackson and Buddy), half of Emmons Guitar (with Ron Lashley), and gave crucial input to two lesser makes (MCI and Derby)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...holy crow - 'redneck jazz' w/ Danny Gatton - I'm dizzy just thinking about it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

That Gatton album is fine stuff.
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:33pm Lane Steelpicker:

It's right purty, Holly. Up to 11 tracks deep
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:33pm coelacanth:

Thanks for all that history,Lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 12:35pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, thanks Lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:35pm northguineahills:

Esquivel!
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:36pm still b/p:

Obits talked about how the instrument is complicated enough for someone to even play competently, never mind masterfully, beautifully and inventively as Buddy did.
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:36pm Lane Steelpicker:

The Gatton record features more classical music. Rimsky-Korsakov, IIRC
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:37pm listener james from westwood:

Ain't a Friday yet dawned that can't be made even better by Esquivel.
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:37pm ndbob:

ah I see NGH and I think exactly alike
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:39pm Holly in NC:

@UM - See what happens when one takes a quick trip to the powder room? Important information missed, that's what!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

His name is actually spelled with an exclamation mark on this album.
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:39pm still b/p:

When Esquivel! stabbed a double "mucho" in there, it mighta been the most amusing musical moment with the woid I ever hoid.
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:39pm Lane Steelpicker:

Still, mine plays itself. I think the notes and they come out of the speaker. But it's taken me thirty years to teach it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

No peeing, Holly!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:43pm Holly in NC:

NOT peeing, UM, was powdering.
No, actually was lotioning radiation sores. TMI ! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm pretty into guitar - & I've not sat @ one of those pedal steel contraptions!...I understand there's knee levers, ritual ablutions & sacrifices to obscure deities involved...all under Wonka's watchful gaze...
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:44pm still b/p:

Ya wanna make FIVE syllables of "paean."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 12:45pm Uncle Michael:

You get dispensation, Holly!
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:45pm Lane Steelpicker:

Still, if you look at my videos on my youtube channel, the one that says "1st and 2nd string raise, The Other Woman", it kinda shows a good view of what we do to play these
www.youtube.com... (I apologize if that's ill mannered)

mmmmm...paella....oh yum....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 12:48pm Mike East:

paella talk is always welcome, and yes, sounds like a great idea!
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 12:48pm Lane Steelpicker:

With my trucking job, I can't gig. And I'm nerdy enough to want to try to help the other steel players, so I do the videos to spread better steeling.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 1:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My word on 'Try Whistling This' by Neil Finn was 'sh! - if this gets out, it could give Pop a good name!'
...Websearched the words SmartPop & all I got was popcorn - but is that a good term ??...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 1:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...when Power Pop got spread a bit thin, I went w/ Guitar Pop (the Hollies aren't especially 'Powerful' a lot...) - not that you're talking about just stuff w/ guitars...nevermind...

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 1:12pm rrg:

Hey. At least half the people here are also regular listeners of Irwin's show. I guess that's not surprising.

Listener Terry A. has been badgering me to add this stream to my life. Hello, Uncle Michael.

Some where I read that Nat King Cole recorded some great instrumental piano jazz but that the record company did not want to release it, because they only wanted to release recordings with him singing because they could make much more money from his singing.

@RRG homes and other places
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

I was just seeing that, EFD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 1:40pm Stanley:

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

Olney has been talking about a Padres/Cubs/Red Sox three-way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 1:41pm melinda:

Good noisy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 1:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...flash, blast, heat, fallout, radioactivity, utter destruction of infrastructure (communication, travel, everything)...okay, I think I got this...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

piece of cake

Yello.

Mr. g. Hallo.

That Civil Defense Spot makes me want to reread Joyce Carol Oates' "You Must Remember This."

I think his baby needs to get a tune-up
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:06pm doctorjazz:

Is that really from a 78?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:08pm doctorjazz:

I was going to say it sounds great, mostly did but showed its vintage towards the end. Phil Schapp would be proud!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

Originally, yes. Not mine though. This is from the paramount records box set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:09pm doctorjazz:

Ooo, wanted that box (cheaped out, though.)
  Fri. 7/31/15 2:10pm Jeff g.:

Lovely segue on the Mamas there, UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:11pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Jeff...not done yet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:11pm doctorjazz:

Great there are so many Red Hot Mamas around!
Avatar Fri. 7/31/15 2:12pm Lane Steelpicker:

Other Emmons trivia that Michael probably already knows: for a big chunk of the 90s, Don and Phil Everly used Buddy in their road band, with Albert Lee on guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

I saw them at TPAC in the '90s...Albert was there. I don't remember if Buddy was.

More trade news: Ben Revere to the Blue Jays.
  Fri. 7/31/15 2:21pm ?:

Hello HDTers. Unc, your lawn comments make me feel a bit guilty about whining before push-mowing my 15' X 50' backlawn. That doesn't even make to the pitcher's mound!
Avatar    Fri. 7/31/15 2:22pm KevinfromBayRidge:

That be me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 2:23pm efd:

I'm guessing the Orioles getting Parra ended their interest in Revere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:25pm Uncle Michael:

I'd guess so. The Parra deal went down?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:25pm Uncle Michael:

I mow on my ass, Kevin. It's just a matter of time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 2:26pm efd:

yeah, it was announced earlier this morning (or maybe late last night)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 2:27pm efd:

Notable to me because the Brewers received Orioles pitching prospect Zach Davies (no relation) in return.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

I'd heard that was the return...didn't know the deal had been confirmed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:28pm Stanley:

UM your ass is grass?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 2:29pm efd:

Some speculation now on Twitter that the Revere deal may not have really happened yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 2:29pm Mike East:

had tumbleweed connection on the TT last week. so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:31pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

Mostly, Stanley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/31/15 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

Hearing anything about that three-way deal, EFD?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 2:37pm coelacanth:

Thank you Michael!

I have this album, but I don't remember this song, not one bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 2:40pm efd:

nothing concrete, UM. Some chatter about a Cubs/Padres deal involving Kimbrel and Tyson Ross, nothing about the Sox being a part of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/31/15 2:42pm efd:

also a separate report that Red Sox are interested in Ross, but didn't mention Cubs tie-in.
