Good news: The State of New York Dept of Taxing and Finance unfroze my checking account. Bad News: They took all of my money.

For my wife's visa requirement, we had to open a joint account, and to prove to the dept of homeland security that we aren't welfare cases, she put $10k of her money in our account. This drew flag w/ the taxing dept, b/c it made it look like I had money when I signed an agreement that I'm unemployed w/ a minimal amount of means to pay my debt. So, I was working w/ a payment plan after I dropped a $1k down payment last July. They initially took $7k from our j oint account, but after proving to them it was her money, they gave it back. Crazy month.

Hopefully good news: I nailed a final interview for a job I actually want here in the City w/ only two other candidates.

One summer I spent many hours listening to a cassette of his, since it was the only one we could play in the car.

The retirement situation in the US started sucking approximately when defined benefit plans gave way to defined contribution, a.k.a. every man and woman for his/herself. Dean: There's an idea: next year there could be a "Singles-o-meter" feature, a little widget on the playlist pages showing the cumulative linear length of singles played during the week...
  5:41pm

A marvel it would be, especially if it tracked the extent of the spiral scratch (to allude to an earlier playlist item), rather than the disk diameters.

  5:42pm
P-90:

Is there a standard "groove length" for discs of different diameters at different speeds?
  5:46pm
Dean:

I have no basis other than intuition for an opinion, but it seems to me there's probably an *average* groove length that's good enough for a fair approximation. But differences in mastering and playing time would cause serious deviations.

Nels Cline and Mike Watt are in the middle of this mess.
