Live Performance by Rachel Ries

As the daughter of missionaries, Rachel Ries spent her early musical life immersed in Mennonite hymns, Suzuki violin and The Carpenters. Ries melded those influences into a considerable talent, with a freewheeling, often breezy storytelling style to her songwriting. Rachel is a frequent collaborator with Anaïs Mitchell, and released her lovely third album, "Ghost of a Gardener," earlier this year. Rachel Ries played live for Irene in advance of a show at the Cornelia Street Cafe.

@Kat, I caught up with a plethora of Baseball Tonight recordings when I got home yesterday, hit the sack at eight last night and slept for 14 hours solid!

Also, if you go - a tip: I went to the Eventim Apollo the night before my own show (last Tuesday) and they let me in to buy merchandise while KaTe was performing. Had the place all to myself to shop and I GOT TO HEAR LIVE 9TH WAVE through the doors for free :) What an incredible bonus that was

@Van, The Mets went 6-3 whilst I was Stateside, that seems to spookily happen when i am your side of "The Pond"! Fenway was close to a religious experience, my first NFL game was scary, memo to myself, don't where a Giants top and cap to a Giants road game!

Sean, maybe they will have the "rescue kit" back in stock by the time you get to the show. It sold out really fast during the first few shows and they never got any more :( I really wanted one.

kat330:

At times I wish I had ears that didn't mind poor instrument or vocal intonation. It can be frustrating hoping to appreciate sounds other people have no problem with. I have no problem with dissonance in well-tuned instruments or voices, but slightly off-pitch is the worst for me.

Oh, another tip Sean: If you aren't in the bottom part of the theater, you likely will not get showed with the confetti. I was upstairs on the left. After the show, I went down by the stage and picked up a TON of the confetti's :)

thinking about taking a poster that reads "Kate, you have to tune into WFMU every Monday at five to listen to the most awesome dj on the planet, you will love what Irene plays, maybe you could do a live slot on her show sometime?" @Irene, would it be ok to do a simple flyer, I have a feeling Kate would really dig what you are playing. I could put something together, let you see it via e-mail and then with your blessing take it to Hammersmith. I have to spread the gospel!

Trenchcoat Wearer:

This is a favorite Genesis album for sure, but it peaks too early with the Broadway Melody of '74 halfway through the first side. Peter in front, Hackett on guitar, Phil in back on drums -- just like it should be!

Thanks for ignoring the anti-Prog broadcast rule!
  2:29pm
ccrides:

There is lambswool under my naked feet.
The wool is soft and warm,
-gives off some kind of heat.
A salamander scurries into flame to be destroyed.
Imaginary creatures are trapped in birth on celluloid.
The fleas cling to the golden fleece,
Hoping they'll find peace.
Each thought and gesture are caught in celluloid.
There's no hiding in my memory.
There's no room to void.

The crawlers cover the floor in the red ochre corridor.
For my second sight of people, they've more lifeblood than before.
They're moving. They're moving in time to a heavy wooden door,
Where the needle's eye is winking, closing in on the poor.
The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out."

There's only one direction in the faces that I see;
It's upward to the ceiling, where the chambers said to be.
Like the forest fight for sunlight, that takes root in every tree.
They are pulled up by the magnet, believing that they're free.
The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out."

Mild mannered supermen are held in kryptonite,
And the wise and foolish virgins giggle with their bodies glowing bright.
Through a door a harvest feast is lit by candlelight;
It's the bottom of a staircase that spirals out of sight.
The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out."

The porcelain mannikin with shattered skin fears attack.
The eager pack lift up their pitchers- the carry all they lack.
The liquid has congealed, which has seeped out through the crack,
And the tickler takes his stickleback.
The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out."
