Live Performance by Rachel Ries |
||||
As the daughter of missionaries, Rachel Ries spent her early musical life immersed in Mennonite hymns, Suzuki violin and The Carpenters. Ries melded those influences into a considerable talent, with a freewheeling, often breezy storytelling style to her songwriting. Rachel is a frequent collaborator with Anaïs Mitchell, and released her lovely third album, "Ghost of a Gardener," earlier this year. Rachel Ries played live for Irene in advance of a show at the Cornelia Street Cafe. |

At times I wish I had ears that didn't mind poor instrument or vocal intonation. It can be frustrating hoping to appreciate sounds other people have no problem with. I have no problem with dissonance in well-tuned instruments or voices, but slightly off-pitch is the worst for me. |

This is a favorite Genesis album for sure, but it peaks too early with the Broadway Melody of '74 halfway through the first side. Peter in front, Hackett on guitar, Phil in back on drums -- just like it should be! Thanks for ignoring the anti-Prog broadcast rule!
Mon. 9/15/14 2:29pm
ccrides:
There is lambswool under my naked feet. The wool is soft and warm, -gives off some kind of heat. A salamander scurries into flame to be destroyed. Imaginary creatures are trapped in birth on celluloid. The fleas cling to the golden fleece, Hoping they'll find peace. Each thought and gesture are caught in celluloid. There's no hiding in my memory. There's no room to void. The crawlers cover the floor in the red ochre corridor. For my second sight of people, they've more lifeblood than before. They're moving. They're moving in time to a heavy wooden door, Where the needle's eye is winking, closing in on the poor. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out." There's only one direction in the faces that I see; It's upward to the ceiling, where the chambers said to be. Like the forest fight for sunlight, that takes root in every tree. They are pulled up by the magnet, believing that they're free. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out." Mild mannered supermen are held in kryptonite, And the wise and foolish virgins giggle with their bodies glowing bright. Through a door a harvest feast is lit by candlelight; It's the bottom of a staircase that spirals out of sight. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out." The porcelain mannikin with shattered skin fears attack. The eager pack lift up their pitchers- the carry all they lack. The liquid has congealed, which has seeped out through the crack, And the tickler takes his stickleback. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out."

Judy B's been busy again lately. She recorded a version of "See Emily Play" that's worthy of a spin. But anyone with a Fairport thing should definitely check her out with them in '68 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94X6YBArri4

I remember moving from Cali to N.J back in the summer of 69...I had a little cassette player of some tunes I got off the radio...Talk To The Wind and Nights in White Satin played back to back on this one tape I had...it was really heart wrenching to leave Cali and move to an unknown and alien place...it took a while to get used to!!!...smile...:)O(:...
