Options September 2, 2014: The Working Life
Yesterday was Labor Day. Hopefully, you had the day off. Let me back up a step: hopefully, you have a job and you got the day off. I was off. Even though I mostly sat indoors working on one computer maintenance project or another, it was still glorious.

I've held many jobs over the years, everything from department store stock boy to assistant baker to factory worker to inbound and outbound telemarketing rep. to catalog director to radio station operations director to pro audio salesman to audio engineer. It's been a strange path to my current job: talk show host and DJ. Along the way I managed to join two unions. Even though I no longer pay dues I like to think of myself as a member-in-good-standing because I appreciate the Labor movement and all it's brought us, even those of us who would never join a union and don't see a need for them.

Tonight, I'd like to hear your stories about the best and worst gigs you've had and what you've learned on the job. Other things to discuss:

one of my worst summer jobs was the night shift loading refrigerated semis at an ice cream plant. you packed the truck as tightly as possible as the boxes came into the reefer by conveyer - you wore a full snowsuit with hood and gloves and then came out to sit on the 80 degree loading dock waiting for the next truck and you sweated like a pig. your nitelife was shot and you slept all day. i lasted three days.

They are only collectible because they are old and people want to pretend to have quality vintage gear.... You said it Chris they sucked then and suck now!!!!

Leaving $ is for good luck. We use the $ for restoration work around the cemetery.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 9/2/14 6:53pm Andrew Waterloo:

I had a job where the people on the factory floor listened to a particular radio station that seemed to be playing 1 of 5 songs every time I walked into that room.

it seems to me that working for a living used to be a source of pride in honing a skill only those in the trade could master. now, in the midst of the information age, trade secrets are becoming a thing of the past and the economy has forced most people with half a brain to do certain things they need done themselves. this has caused at lot of amatuer repairs and restorations that are just not done right, while putting people out of work. technology has turned a corner, and it is only the beginning. with all the smart pill bottle caps, health bracelets, refrigerators, etc., reminding us all the time, we are destined to become a bunch of zombies doing everything computers tell us to do. technology should do what we tell it to do, not the other way around. the "smarter" we make these things the dumber we become.
Avatar    Tue. 9/2/14 6:58pm JakeGould:

I work with computers nowadays. It’s it’s own hell. I mean my mark of success is spending as much time as possible in a dark room staring at a glowing screen? What am I? A mushroom?
