@Listener James from Westwood
That Lata Mangeshkar track was from the 1973 film Naya Nasha. Here is the synopsis:

Reena lives a very wealthy lifestyle with her businessman dad, socialite mom, and widower paternal grandfather in a mansion. She studies in college, is very bored, and joins protesting students who are agitating against rising college fees. She has a crush on their family doctor, Samar Chowdhary. She goes on a date with him to a club and falls for the club's singer, Sharad, who rejects her. Still bored, she gets friendly with Kitty, who in turn introduces her to Rana, and from thence on Reena gets hooked on drugs and starts coming home late at night. Her grandfather notices this and tells her dad, who in turn confronts her, and convinces her to get married to Samar. The marriage does take place but Reena is unable to keep away from drugs, and refuses any treatment. She gets pregnant and is hospitalized. Her parents who have been away, return home several months later to view their grandchild little realizing the horror that awaits them and that soon their daughter will be arrested by the Police, and may face the gallows for shooting a man to death.

Kenzo has me thinking that "Jesse's Girl" riff is gonna loop and loop for 15 minutes. I no longer expect to hear the actual song!

oh my lord
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

I wish that I had Jesse's squirrel.

  Wed. 5/21/14 12:17pm Lulu:

this song is so catchy no matter who sings it
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:17pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, gods, it was about Jesse's hurl all this time!!!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:18pm Amanda:

I know, it's disappointing that they didn't change it to "squirrel" throughout.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:19pm pacific standard simon:

Of course, this being The Scenario, I assumed Amanda was playing the original at the wrong speed, at first.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:21pm listener james from westwood:

Dang, it's college all over again with this Giant on right now. Time to ignore my summer job and write roleplaying adventures while I'm supposed to be delivering files.

Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:27pm pacific standard simon:

I can actually play Sugar Sugar on the uke -- always do the "I'm gonna make your life so sweet" line in my deepest fake Barry White voice, though.

'Bloom County.' Wow. Long time..

The "We're Not Candy" PSA with the singing pills still sticks in my head. Uses Chipmunk vocals, too.

afternoon Amanda and everyone!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:35pm Amanda:

afternoon ndbob! And, I'd be remiss in not saying, afternoon to ALL of you nice folks.

LJFW, I have played that We're Not Candy PSA on the show before!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:35pm Dominick:

Oh wow! Haven't heard this in a long time.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:45pm listener james from westwood:

@A: Oh, yes, you're right! It likely inspired a number of NYC-ad-market flashbacks in me, ranging from Castro Convertible to the Milford Plaza.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:53pm Amanda:

Aaaahhhh! The worst misuse of "Lullabye on Broadway" in history.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:54pm Matt F:

Not many white boys could do this song and come away with their dignity intact but David Jo manages the near-impossible.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:55pm pacific standard simon:

Another 10 years and they'll be dragging David Johansen out of a nursing facility to perform at a glam-rock revival festival.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:56pm Stevel:

Not sure there was a better radio rocker than Radar Love in the 70s. It worked, pumping out of my flying-saucer-shaped transistor, while I ran my Denver Post route.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

While I was walking to work past said Milford Plaza, I heard one person sing th last line of the jingle. This was like 2000, so that tag did its job. An old, emphysematic Don Draper would be smiling.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:57pm bpd:

This song makes me wish I had a burnt orange 71 Chevelle. I feel like each only exists to supplement the other.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:58pm listener james from westwood:

Hells yes, "Radar Love."
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 12:58pm northguineahills:

I didn't think I liked Golden Earring.

This is not helping my work productivity.

Thank you.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:04pm pacific standard simon:

My wife is half Dutch -- she still corresponds with one of her few surviving relatives in The Netherlands.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:08pm Skirkie:

I don't ever think of "The Netherlands" without thinking of crotches because I'm 14 apparently.
  Wed. 5/21/14 1:10pm jay c:

listening to the show for the first time in the comfort of my own home, incredible
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:11pm pacific standard simon:

I'm never ashamed of liking The Monkees, but I have a special dispensation because they were my first favorite band, as a nerdy little pre-teen kid in 1966.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:13pm listener james from westwood:

@Skirkie: I always thought of the underworld vs. the anatomical zone. Likely due to lots of childhood D&D. \m/
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:14pm pacific standard simon:

And yes, Neil really should put in a guest appearance. In fact, they should have rotating guest stars to replace Davy -- it's too bad Harry Nilsson isn't around for something like that.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:17pm Brian in UK:

Hello Amanda, just sorting records and was looking at a copy of the Turtles gatefold album but thirty minutes ago. A concept album, will never catch on.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:20pm Dominick:

Too bad Zappa's no longer around to come out to play Nesmith
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:22pm Dan B From Upstate:

Too many great things in this episode to name. The No Homers Club, the entirety of the stone cutters song, and the nerdy x-teen year old me loved that Patrick Stewart from Next Gen was in it.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:23pm Dan B From Upstate:

Oh yeah. The real phone number is 912.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:23pm listener james from westwood:

"And I'll take this Communist card, too!"
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:25pm listener james from westwood:

"He's gone mad with power, like that Albert Schweitzer guy!"
OMG, the drinking song is the best.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:26pm northguineahills:

"Remove the Stone of Shame", "Woohoo!""Attach the Stone of Triumph!" "D'oh!"
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:26pm listener james from westwood:

They should have started using the Stonecutters song as Dave Emory's in-theme.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:31pm Amanda:

@pss, and they were mine too, when I was a nerdy pre-teen in 1988.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:33pm listener james from westwood:

Eartha en Français? Mon cor!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:34pm listener james from westwood:

Wait, I thought this was Eartha Kitt! Mon mistake!!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:36pm earrie:

Hey maybe they'll do an outdoor screening.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:37pm pacific standard simon:

...and original Cramps drummer.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:40pm pacific standard simon:

Mike Nesmith will charge you hundreds of dollars to sign stuff, according to Michael Shelley.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:41pm Amanda:

Chip Douglas was the original Cramps drummer!?!?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:46pm Brian in UK:

Chip Douglas engineered & produced The Turtles 'Battle'. Has that been said already?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:47pm Amanda:

Ya
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:47pm bpd:

Michael Nesmith also spells his name incorrectly intentionally, then offers to sell you Liquid Paper (at a huge markup) to correct it. But it's either that or your copy of Pisces Aquarius reads "Best wishez, Mikhail Bismuth".
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:49pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, Mikhail Bismuth. Where would Pepto-Bismol be without him?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:49pm Amanda:

@pss, yep, that's what the New Yorker said too. Also, YOU GUYS HAVE TO STOP BEING MEAN TO MY FAV CUTEST MONKEE OF ALL MIKE NESMITH
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:50pm listener james from westwood:

Hey, at least we're not pointing at Marge Simpson's Monkees lunchbox and saying, "That's not even Michael Nesmith's real head!"
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:52pm listener james from westwood:

w00t! FCC-unfriendly singalong!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:53pm Dominick:

But Officer Byrd isn't wearing a seat belt!!!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 1:59pm DeaconDave:

No seat belt, I guess he'll just fly out of the car during an accident
