noth·ing/[nuhth-ing]

Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:25am Alessia:

@Bibi salut! it's been a long time! yes We're going and very excited about it! J'ai hate de voir Meridian Brothers, Man or astroman Niessenmondai and such!

Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:28am bibi:

slt pierre ! the octopus vanished to nothing.
slowdive is so damn expensive. im so scared about seeing man or astroman live, i idealized them so much in my teenage years.
@meghan, i bet you'll go for 'nothing much to lose'. i love it, but who doesnt...
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:28am fred von helsing:

Oh God, no. The letters of "In Thong" can be rearranged to spell... NOTHING !
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:30am Meghan:

I saw Man or Astroman live last summer.... they still have it. Not as amazing of a stage show as they used to have, but they still wear spacesuits and it's still fun none the less.....
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:31am Guido from Cologne:

@Dave B
Is a diphtong also for consonants?
Dunno, how'd U pronounce "TseTse fly"?
Something like that.
I'd suggest a TZAP for it ("Time Zone Appropriate Pronounciation")

Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:33am Guido from Cologne:

... one of their best ... IMHO
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:33am Alessia:

Thank you Meghan. I feel relieved, a friend told me that when he saw them he was very disappointed. But still I think it's something you HAVE to see if you get the possibility.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:33am fred von helsing:

Reuniting: Veruca Salt, maybe Hole, soon Babes in Toyland. WHY NOT LUSH ? *snif*
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:34am Alessia:

@Bibi who else are you planning to see?
Btw guys this is the website with the programme in case one of you wants to check it out and join us :) www.villettesonique.com
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:35am Meghan:

It really depends on the venue too..... I used to see them in a small club in Boston. Then the next time I saw them it was outdoors and it just wasn't as good. This last time was not a great space for them, but the tickets were free, so I can't complain. Mary Wing saw them the day before me in a smaller club, so I wonder if it was better there.....
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:35am Guido from Cologne:

Lush missed the "magic shoegaze comeback year"?
(2013 with MBV & Medicine)
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:36am fred von helsing:

I would crawl across a mile of crushed glass to sniff... NOTHING!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:36am Meghan:

FVH- out of that list the only ones I'd care about are Lush! I am still kicking myself for never seeing them live.....
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:36am fred von helsing:

OK so 2013 was shoegaze and 2014 is The Sound of Olympia ? "When I went to school..."
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:37am fred von helsing:

@meghan Yeah a lot of that stuff is an acquired taste eh
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:37am bibi:

@alessia, im sure going to be around for outdoors gigs in the we, they are usually amazing.
i'll go for holden, thats sure, and probably hopkins/4tet.
fuck buttons and the field are really great memories.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:37am Guido from Cologne:

meghan, you're not alone!
I was much too broke during their heyday ...
  Thu. 5/15/14 6:37am pierre:

@ bibi : well, the octopus can't appear when using the app, as I can't login on the friendship community... Or can I?..

Regarding Man or... Well, that's the thing listening to them while being a teenager, I kind of want to see their music live. Plus I don't really mind seeing old bands and musicians, I find it moving, the music then touch me on another level.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:39am Meghan:

I don't know if I was broke or just going to too many shows! ha!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:39am Guido from Cologne:

@pierre
miss the login feature also.
Confusing is, there is a "fave"-feature in the app.
Since i use a tablet i use the browser
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:39am Guido from Cologne:

Broke because of too many shows ...
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:41am bibi:

@pierre, but you never really know their motivation. is it for the fun, for the money, for both... many times you see half of the band not enjoying it at all.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:41am Guido from Cologne:

qfred
Sleater Kinney reunion dawning somewhere, wouldn't wonder.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:42am fred von helsing:

@guido Yeah wild flag was sort of a disappointment, it didn't hit the sweet spot
Thu. 5/15/14 6:42am Sir Richard Slouch:

I gotta put it out there. The Fugs?
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:42am Guido from Cologne:

... missed to put the "?"
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:43am fred von helsing:

been liking CHVRCHES
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:43am Guido from Cologne:

Depeche Mode are still/again great ... i have been told by adept fans ...
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:44am KP:

Hi, Meghan
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:44am bibi:

@fvh, dont confess this in public ! confess this in, hm, churches...
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:45am Guido from Cologne:

@fred
Anyway as for jabet weiss: Quasi are still worthwhile.
Haven't seen the Corin Tucker Band
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:46am bibi:

i read a fun blog essay about a guy explaining why he hated chvrches and how he was sorry to hate them. i kind of feel the same.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:47am fred von helsing:

POUTINE / POUTAIN, it's the sequel to VICTOR / VICTORIA
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:48am fred von helsing:

there's a bar in town with a jukebox with this Edith and some Marlene Dietrich and crazy good retro stuff
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:48am kat330:

Good morning, Meghan! Heard you mention seeing Church. ("Under the Milky Way Tonight" is one of my mood-creation faves.)

Well, I got to work (indirectly) with Church in a video piece Philo ("Shriek") produced for Jeff Vandermeer here: www.darkfantasy.org...
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:48am Meghan:

The Church..... different from CVRCHES.... who I have yet to hear....
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:49am kat330:

Right, THE Church. :)
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:49am Meghan:

Morning Kat! Yes, so many good memories with old Church songs....
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:50am Guido from Cologne:

Fist Star-Click today!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:51am Dave B:

dig that crazy farfisa sound!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:51am Alessia:

Fist Star Click sounds like a pokemon fighting move.
  Thu. 5/15/14 6:52am pierre:

@ bibi : well the motivation behind music is very obscure. And well, if they have taxes to pay well I'll be glad to help. It's funny because I use to be very "against" old bands continuing to play. Now I feel way more understanding as well as not caring that much.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:53am fred von helsing:

gotta run to lunch! While I'm away, play NOTHING!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:53am Guido from Cologne:

Cambodian Rocks. which volume?
... prices in Europe: shocking!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:54am KP:

Just realized who does the "anything" song I was thinking of. Anything but that!
  Thu. 5/15/14 6:54am grass mother:

Man nothing on WFMU this morning
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:55am Meghan:

I am assuming it's the first one, as there isn't a number to it.... Though I will say, lots of Cambodian stuff from that time is great. I will be starting a musical adventure through there at some point.... just sayin'.....
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:55am bibi:

btw, my guitarist is in love with a band called 'rien'. just in case, meghan.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:56am Alessia:

Bibi how will we recognise you there at la villette? Give us some hints.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:57am Guido from Cologne:

It's volume II, track 1
www.discogs.com...
Still too expensive (sipping from US)
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:58am Guido from Cologne:

@meghan
Will U make a Kambodian Premium?
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:58am bibi:

the hint is that fred knows my incarnation since merzbow.
still, i want to see both of you calling out for bibi in the crowd ;)
  Thu. 5/15/14 6:58am grass mother:

I think it was cassettes volume two. Same one that my morning jacket stole that song off of and changed the words to "keep holding onto black metal" and even john schaffer had to check them on that
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:59am Meghan:

Hmmmm, I have it as Volume 1..... well, we shall see. I still have part 2 of my African Adventures to put up as my premium too....
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 6:59am Guido from Cologne:

Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:02am Meghan:

Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:02am bibi:

Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:03am Guido from Cologne:

a budget-version woud be nice!

I really wanna go to Cambodia. My friend says you can live like royalty for three months on $1000.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:12am Dave B:

Sublime Frequencies has some good releases. I think I found that Cambodian Rocks collection back in the day before music blogs collapsed (and the Kim Dotcom fiasco). So any mislabeling is not my own fault.....
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:12am Alessia:

@Bibigeist problem is we really did at Julianna Barwick's gig, calling random strangers " Hey, Bibi!"
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:12am Meghan:

ohhhhh man, I really want to head to that part of Asia. Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand..... eat my way across the continent!

Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:14am Dave B:

BURMA!

I panicked!
  Thu. 5/15/14 7:14am pierre:

@ bibi : I'll be probably wearing a black tshirt (or a wfmu one) and glasses. Then we will be hanging next to le jardin des iles, since the free gigs there are great this year (Juana Molina, Nisenenmondai...) so yeah, my tentacles won't be far from there.
  Thu. 5/15/14 7:15am grass mother:

Ya but there's great authentic Thai food in queens tho
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:15am Meghan:

Best Chinese street food in North America -- golden mall in Flushing
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:16am Meghan:

  Thu. 5/15/14 7:18am grass mother:

For authentic Thai in queens go to Sri Pra Phai. The menu is a binder
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:18am bibi:

@pierre, juana molina ?! i didnt realise, génial. but yr description is quite vague, there will be at least 10 octopusses dressed that way !
JB, thx meghan, good timing.

I didn't know Prince wrote that song.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:31am Deacon Dave:

I can think of nothing when it comes to anything requests!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:32am Dave B:

yep... Price wrote it.

Pharell is working his way into similar territory. A recent interview he did on Howard Stern he mentioned that "Happy" was originally written for Cee-Lo Green.

It was a really good interview. Check it out on the you tubes...

OMG- Dave you had me at this-

Delicious food & football
One of the biggest draws of the event is its collection of street food vendors, many of which only participate in this annual event! From juicy ribs dripping in exotic Surinamese sauce, to spicy Korean tacos that make your tongue tingle, or stalls that stop off in the Middle East and Africa, you'll find tasty treats from all over the globe.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:43am Meghan:

Yep! That's why I said adventure originally! trips are much shorter in length..... hehe
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:43am Dave B:

we will expect a full report with lots of photos
  Thu. 5/15/14 7:44am P-90:

It's a beautiful old city, be sure to visit the Rijksmuseum where all the Rembrandts are. (The Italian resturant across the street is not bad for lunch.) The boat tours of the city through the canals are definitely worth doing. BUT: don't expect an exciting music scene there.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:44am Guido from Cologne:

Amsterdam?
Visit the Rembrandts and the "Coffee Shops" ;-)
... and the northern Venetian atmosphere has something.
... and 2nd hand record shops are way better then in Germany!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:45am Dave B:

getting the "munchies" in A'dam is not a problem. Is Jefff going too?
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:46am Meghan:

oh no? no good music?! that is sad! ohhh, good to know the used record stores are good..... that is important! I plan on lots of record shopping!

No Jeff..... he got to go to China without me..... this is my trip that I've been invited on!
  Thu. 5/15/14 7:48am P-90:

There are a few clubs that showcase the mixed bag of local bands that tour through Europe and hit all the bigger cities. Lot's of Metal cover bands, 80's cover bands, some more adventurous stuff here and there, depends on who's playing when you're there, luck of the draw.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:50am Van in DC:

I got nothin'. Hi Meghan
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:51am davex:

WLIR/WDRE set... eh Davex?
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:55am davex:

You recognized it, Dave B!
  Thu. 5/15/14 7:55am P-90:

Nothing like the more ambitious, idiosyncratic bands that you'd see at clubs in Brookyln or somewhere like that. Check the venues, there might be something enticing. Expect a lot of beer-sticky, mosh-pit-sweaty clubs that cater more to the local working folks and students who want to get wasted and blow off steam. And kids from around Europe, it's like a "Spring Breakish" kind of getaway town for students in nearby countries. And check out the Red light district, some good bars there.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:56am Dave B:

Lived it! (Hometown = Baldwin)
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 7:58am bibi:

This is Fucked Up!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:33am davex:

I just realized that the word "anything" is a particular construction in English. Hard to find a real German equivalent, for example.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:33am bibi:

@meghan, you mean north america is a place where you cannot find a plush version of milou ?! then just stay in europe and never come back.

the temptation to go to Europe and never leave is tempting..... They exist here.... I just never bought one. It's a rare thing to find. Not many places here understand the wonder of Tin Tin....
  Thu. 5/15/14 8:36am P-90:

If you befriend milou in childhood, he's a friend for life, Herge was a real genius in many ways, IMO.

@meghan: bipolar guy did a fine job.

Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:48am Guido from Cologne:

Did I mention them today?
QUASI!
  Thu. 5/15/14 8:48am P-90:

i remember there was a major launch of Tintin merch in N. America in the 90's, animated videos, mugs, figurines, posters. I'm sure I saw a nice plush Snowy in a trendy toy store on Madison Ave. But the stuff didn't catch on, and it"s not around anymore.
I remember when Spielberg made his 3D Tintin movie a few years ago that they said the tied-in merchandise would be much more limited than for the typical cartoon blockbuster, because American kids just don't want that much of it.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:49am bibi:

spatulator's avatar is nearly as cute as meghan's, but it's sadly not animated.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:50am Cheri Pi:

I was hoping for Flipper!!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:51am Meghan:

I never say Spielberg's movie... partially cause it shouldn't be 3D. Let's be honest. it's the amazing line work and drawing style that I love!

The movie was a very loving and respectful tribute, but no, it did not in any real way suggest the particular experience of reading the books.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:53am Spatulator (formerly elwyn5150):

I prefer to think of my avatar as a creepatar.

Ohhh! Good timing - I got here intime for YLT even though I own this CD. :-)
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:53am Guido from Cologne:

Hm ... the plush should be 2d too then ... some consequence must be ...
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:54am Dave B:

bibi beat me to it!
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:54am bibi:

that spielberg thing. pfff.
Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:54am Meghan:

  Thu. 5/15/14 8:55am P-90:

Avatar Thu. 5/15/14 8:55am davex:
