Favoriting May 13, 2014: Cobra Covers The Hits
I've often talked on air about how important the guitar has been in my life. I can draw a straight line back from what I'm doing now to the first time I picked up my sister's friend Rodney's Harmony Stratotone. He'd leave it lying around our house and I'd spend hours trying to figure out its secrets. When the junior high offered guitar instruction, I dived in. That's where I met Billy K. We did a lot of jamming at his house and mine and eventually formed the band Cobra. Tonight, I'll be joined in the studio by Cobra's drummer, Richie "Ragu" Geldermann, who still plays drums and is also a budding stand-up comedian and actor. Richie will remind me just what the hell I was like when I was fourteen and tell us about his act and acting. I'd love to hear about your high school band and your axe. And I'll ask you to guess which hits Cobra covered. I had a red, white & blue shirt very similar to the lead singer.

Kobra or Cobra?

Ken From Hyde Park:

More precisely, I had a shirt like the one worn by the lead singer. I played cornet in the high school band, but was never in a rock band.

Not only do I remember when tuning forks were commonly used to tune guitars, I remember when I was a kid there were older kids, like high school seniors, more than one of whom would hold the tuning fork in their teeth, they could hear the tone real clearly in their heads, while matching to the strings

growing up in the 60s and 70s we'd ride our bikes all day for miles and miles and hours just to buy a popsicle somewhere. no helmets, no calling home to check in...the biggest concern was getting by the houses that dogs unleashed outside and if you could outrun them.

My first band that played a gig did pretty much all Nirvana covers. I learned to tune my bass from a video cassette. It was a Fender (Squier) Jazz Bass. I named it Yoda, cuz I was a Star Wars geek.
