Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I hope the bass player doesn't get a cramp.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 12:43pm Holly in NC:

@pss - migas ..mmm...
OK, now going to test phone network in boonies. Had to move a manual transmission Jeep to get to car I CAN drive. Haven't dealt with manual transmission since a couple of days in the 80s, & I wasn't good then. Took a rather long time to get the damn Jeep out of driveway... and I am now totally shaken. Not my car(s) or driveway, had to UBER careful & gentle!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 12:45pm northguineahills:

Mmmm, Migas! I can make those for lunch if I'm motivated enough. My gf's mom just sent us some smoky salsa de xoconoxtle and some huitlacoche.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 12:46pm Holly in NC:

Long, narrow, winding driveway, with ditches on the side. I am still freaking out.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 12:48pm Doug Schulkind:

Back in I think it was 1988 WFMU gave away a big station-wide marathon prize: An actual camper that had been owned by members of Camper Van Beethoven.

I'm not even kidding.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 12:48pm Holly in NC:

@ngh - jealous!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 12:49pm ndbob:

Wow Holly- I've only driven a manual transmission once.

So, are we all hopping mad and writing our congresspeople re this FCC/Net Neutrality nonsense? boingboing.net...
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

have you *met* my congressman?
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:04pm Doug Schulkind:

My daughter's soccer game got rained out, so I ain't going nowheres.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:05pm ndbob:

@UM probably pretty much like mine
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:05pm Jeff Golick:

Have wondered if/how the net neutrality decision(s) would affect WFMU's web activities...
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:05pm Uncle Michael:

My congresswoman will do exactly what the tea party caucus tells her to do.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:06pm ndbob:

about the same here UM
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:06pm earrie:

Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:07pm Doug Schulkind:

I came thisclose to playing Bobby Bare on my show today.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:08pm northguineahills:

Soccer games can get rained out? When I was a wee one, we played as long as there wasn't lightning.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:10pm listener james from westwood:

w00t! Happy 50th!! Looking forward to the anniversary show!

Good afternoon
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:16pm Uncle Michael:

Hi Tate!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:16pm Uncle Michael:

Are you on the road?
  Fri. 4/25/14 1:17pm tater:

Listening at the office
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:18pm Doug Schulkind:

When we were young, played on fields that were uphill. Both ways.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:18pm Brian in UK:

Thought this was The KLF 'Build a Fire'.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

I wish I had a Scots accent.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:22pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know that Brian...but I will!
  Fri. 4/25/14 1:23pm Dean:

I heard those vibes and smelled Dickerson! Just a couple days ago I revisited his recording of duets with Sun Ra, "Visions." It's a must for every collection!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

Oooh...I need to hear those.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

I'm gld you're listening, Dean.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:26pm northguineahills:

@Doug, I seem to remember playing on parabolic fields as a youth.
  Fri. 4/25/14 1:26pm Dean:

Lord, yes! It's an indispensable record, Steeplechase label, bonus tracks on the CD. I have it on CD (two copies, one a friend's rip), vinyl, and cassette. Bury me in it, folks. Also on Steeplechase for fans of Dickerson, his duets with Richard Davis, "Divine Gemini."
  Fri. 4/25/14 1:27pm Dean:

The pleasure is all mine, UM.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:28pm Brian in UK:

Looking forward to Irwin's Premiun. Almost as much as yours, Uncle.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:29pm listener james from westwood:

Double shot of Lee? This is the best of places.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:29pm Uncle Michael:

his is much better!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:31pm Uncle Michael:

Brian, I didn't mean to sound ungracious. I'm really glad you wanted mine.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:31pm Doug Schulkind:

This blog has that Sun Ra/Walt Dickerson on Steeplechase: musicaenespiral.blogspot.com...
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:32pm paul b:

Hey I gotta go to lunch soon. When are you going to play Blixa's version of morning dew?
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:33pm northguineahills:

Halftime, gonna check up on Bryce. Thanks UM, digging these versions of Morning Dew.
  Fri. 4/25/14 1:34pm tater:

Got your cd and have enjoyed it

Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:37pm Uncle Michael:

take a chance on me, still b/p
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:37pm ndbob:

great rodent themed song here!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:42pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Tate. It was fun to make. I hope I can come up with an idea for 2015.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Just now my cat was about to barf on the bed and I unceremoniously shoved him onto the floor so I wouldn't have to wash the spread. Now I feel a little guilty, but not as guilty as I bet I should feel.
  Fri. 4/25/14 1:44pm 23 Wolves:

This show is excellent, I am having a lazy unemployed day at home and just loving it. Thanks!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:46pm Jeff Golick:

Chris Bell: great music; sad story.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

I feel ya, Doug.

@23 Wolves: Thank you so much for the kind words.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:48pm earrie:

I hope the cat didn't lose its setup. Or unsaved work. That's nasty.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:48pm still b/p:

Maybe the cat would like a bit of the pizza-reserved bacon as a make-up gift.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:49pm pacific standard simon:

Cats are least cute when they are barfing.

Next week, UM! Always a great show when I'm not too busy getting ready for work to listen.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:50pm Doug Schulkind:

I have a long-hair that is perpetually uncute.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

See ya next week, Simon. Come home with all your digits.
  Fri. 4/25/14 1:52pm Dean:

I'm grateful for that hyphen in "long-hair."
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:53pm Whooda:

I don't know what you sissies are whining about playing soccer on uphill fields. We only had uncleared briar patches that grew over old gravel pits to play ball in. Heck, we couldn't even afford air for the soccer ball.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:53pm still b/p:

I'd sure rather hear Rod do this than the Great American Songbook.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:53pm earrie:

I admire a dog's double-direction pyloric valve. (I think it's the pyloric valve that's a one-way in humans).
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:56pm listener james from westwood:

That's the one between the stomach and duodenum? Boy, I hope so.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 1:56pm Whooda:

A dog's take on double-direction pyloric valve, "Is that bacon I smell?!?"
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:00pm earrie:

As I recall, it's why yakking is such a low-production affair for dogs. Something to immediately reject from the stomach? Out that 'revolving' door it came in.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:03pm still b/p:

Sort of a bungee lunch.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:04pm Doug Schulkind:

This David Essex track is very Steely Danish.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:04pm Uncle Michael:

All I know is that efd must be at lunch.
  Fri. 4/25/14 2:05pm Dean:

"Oh, Darling"?
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:05pm earrie:

@ljfw yeah. heh img.tfd.com...
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

I ain't clicking on that.
  Fri. 4/25/14 2:07pm Dean:

Alright, I'll bite. (Bad choice of words.) Do not...do NOT...take a peak at RateMyVomit while you're lunching, or even just snacking.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

Nice catch, Dean.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:08pm earrie:

It's a simple labelled line drawing of an infant mid yak-stream. Comical to me on some level I can't explain.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:12pm still b/p:

Ride, Butch and Sundance, ride!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

This version lacks Ravenscroft. It's a problem.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:12pm Whooda:

I think you have officially just about covered all possible musical bases today DJ Uncle Michael. Can only expect an opera number before 3:00
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:16pm listener james from westwood:

@earrie: Just spent the last 5 min laughing at that image. (No offense to any parents who've had to deal with this in real life!)
I call and raise 1 dinosaur vomit: twitter.com...
  Fri. 4/25/14 2:16pm Dean:

If opera, let it be Mitterer's Massacre: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_urFgWNj0I
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

Lulu's kicking some ass.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:18pm still b/p:

Little less school-girlish than the "Sir" song/character vibe, uh-HUH.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:18pm Uncle Michael:

Dean...I played opera...once...doing a Tuesday night fill-in for Jesse.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:18pm earrie:

I think the hilarity is in all that artistic detail of the projected.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:20pm earrie:

I fold. Heh! Drowned in dino-spew.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:20pm Whooda:

I can just picture Lulu with heroin-black eyelids and a smoking fag hanging from the corner of her mouth singing Morning Dew.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

When they wrote "wide-screen tv" that was still relevant.
  Fri. 4/25/14 2:25pm Holly:

@Doug re barfing cat on bed - feel no guilt. Done it gazillion times. Hike! :-)
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:27pm efd:

whoops, yes, I was indeed at lunch. Carry on. (And I concur with Holly regarding the swoop-the-cat-off-the-bed move.)
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

Hi Even. How's it hangin'?
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:29pm Uncle Michael:

I think this single is *perfect*.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:29pm Uncle Michael:

Which is amazing...considering that it's sung by someone that has no idea what he's talking about.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:30pm Whooda:

Perfect indeed, except maybe the visual of an eight year old singing lead.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:32pm Whooda:

Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:33pm Gaylord Fields:

I'm currently working on a Michael Jackson special-edition magazine for my day job, and I've spent this week marveling at how uncanny this little kid's singing ability is, with the song UM just selected as absolute proof of his gifts.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:35pm Uncle Michael:

His...and frankly...everyone involved at the top of their respective games. That arrangement and production and the song are all just top fucking drawer.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:38pm Uncle Michael:

Nice to see you, Gaylord.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:39pm ndbob:

good version here
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:43pm Gaylord Fields:

Today I was talking with a work colleague about "The Love You Save" — Michael is so dynamic a presence on that record that you actually forget that it's actually a co-lead with Jermaine.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:43pm Gaylord Fields:

Thanks for being so welcoming, UM!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:45pm Uncle Michael:

Jermaine got a lot of that.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:48pm Alex In Illinois:

Wasn't there a Cheech and Chong bit about a retirement home called "The Last Roundup"?
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:49pm Gaylord Fields:

Jermaine's like Lou Gehrig on a team that already has Babe Ruth. He's a mighty fine singer in his own right (and remember that he was only 14-15 years old himself during the J5's early hit boom), but really...
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:49pm βrian:

The Gratefull Dead? My, my!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

I understand that Dennis Hull was pretty good at hockey, too.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:51pm Whooda:

It was a long walk to get there DJ Uncle Michael but an *excellent* excuse to play the Dead.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:51pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Afternoon Dewwed up! Great show there lad!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

You betcha, Brian.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:52pm Uncle Michael:

If I do another Dew show in a year...I might not avail myself of the excuse. I need no excuse!

Thanks, Bob.

Hey man!... This may be the CAT-free,, but it ain't THE DEAD -free internet!!!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:55pm Alex In Illinois:

Now that I have heard the other versions of this song, well, some of these other versions were pretty haunting in their own way. I am glad I got to hear them all. I think I was missing out until now.

A dear friend went to a concert in the early 80s and partook of the customary mood enhancers. She had great fun and was distracted to the point that, from time to time, she would ask herself, "Who's playing that music? And why are they playing out of tune?"
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:56pm Doug Schulkind:

Morning Dews and don'ts.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:56pm Gaylord Fields:

Just yesterday I was discussing fear of the Dead on WFMU with several station DJs (UM was not among them). All were open to playing certain tracks, myself included, even though I'm not really a fan of the group in general. So expect slightly more airings than the usual almost none of the Grateful Dead on WFMU in coming times.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:56pm efd:

Coincidentally just yesterday I was involved in a discussion about which Grateful Dead song I might ever play on my show. As was someone else here, but I'll let that person choose to speak up or not.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:57pm efd:

ah, well, there's that cat out of the bag (and throwing up on the floor).
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:57pm Uncle Michael:

I'm a goddam Deadhead. So...ya know...
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:57pm ndbob:

I saw the Dead in 1970 - they were really good - can't say I've cared much for them after the mid-70s though
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:58pm Gaylord Fields:

I beat you to it, efd!
  Fri. 4/25/14 2:58pm Dean:

Somebody really needs to play John Oswald's Greyfolded.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:58pm KevinfromBayRidge:

The dead may be the perfect counter-balance to Bryce!
  Fri. 4/25/14 2:58pm Jack:

I always thought the role of mood enhancers at Dead concerts was so that they NEVER sounded out of tune...
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

I will, Dean.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:59pm βrian:

@UM Does that imply you can't dance? (Just something I noticed among devotees I've known and loved ...)
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 2:59pm Uncle Michael:

I think I can dance and that's all that really matters.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:00pm still b/p:

One show...1977, I think. Enjoyed it although psychedics we bought were no good. Concert didn't turn me into a bigger fan of the band.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:01pm βrian:

I first heard the Dead while in a VW bug on a Summer's day in 1975. Heading west on I-69 if that's important.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:01pm Sue P.:

I will not be playing any Grateful Dead on the WFMU airwaves. Ever.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:01pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Be Dead-Strong, Unc!!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:02pm Uncle Michael:

Is this Sue's first comment in my comments!? It was all so very worth it!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:02pm βrian:

(In fact, I think they were dancing about architecture...)
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:04pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Never say never, Sue.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:04pm Sue P.:

it's true. an armed hippie could break in while i'm on the air....
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:05pm βrian:

It's a sleepy bounce, but this bed music does have a bounce. That's a good thing. A necessary thing.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:05pm Gaylord Fields:

@Sue P. Then only at home, when no one will know, right?
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:05pm KevinfromBayRidge:

There ya go!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:06pm listener james from westwood:

The hippie would get frustrated while being buzzed in, then just settle for getting buzzed.
Great show, UM! Many thanks!!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:07pm earrie:

I'm outta here, following the dog back through the swinging cardiac (esophogeal) sphincter, or maybe the pylorus. Well digested show either way, UM.
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:07pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks everyone...even you hippie haters!
Avatar Fri. 4/25/14 3:07pm Doug Schulkind:

What? You're leaving? Just like that?!
Avatar Tue. 4/29/14 6:20pm listener jeff:

Catching up on archive. Way to go UM. Don't let 'em bully ya!
