A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

i must confess i've been disappointed when i heard partch.
i long heard about his microtonal system and so on, but the sonic result didint convince me.
he composed a lot and maybe i need someone to help me find my way in this jungle.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:02am glenn:

yeah, i don't really get it either. 12 notes is enough.

All ears. Thanks y'all!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:04am bibi:

glenn, i dont hear much difference. im ok with 53 or so intervals, but i expected a result like nancarrow.
something messy or ver subtle.
anyone, a good intro track to partch own scale system ?
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:05am TDK60:

Partch was very percussion oriented but there are stringed instruments there and microtonal organs.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:08am Roberto:

Smoooooth
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:09am Cecile:

I always thought Partch sounded like gamelan played by hobos.

Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:12am Cecile:

oh, and to add to my recommendation of BOY the movie, the soundtrack is also excellent. Great sountrack music by Phoenix Foundation along with Maori songs, and a few period pieces.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:13am northguineahills:

He also made a lot of instruments in the pentatonic scale. He definitely utilized many hobo narratives.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:14am βrian:

That's on my netflix list, by the way. Merci.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:15am Cecile:

you are welcome, let me know what you think of it.
In many ways, it scratched the itch that "Beasts of the Southern Wild" did not.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:15am tim from champaign:

Alright! I enjoy hearing DJ Icepack! Trouble, could you ask Icepack if he could fill us in on what's in his music and books high rotation?
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:17am tim from champaign:

Cecile - now you've got me curious about Boy. I really dug Beasts of the Southern Wild. Another film I saw recently and really dug was "A Field In England".
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:17am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Good morning Trouble! Hope that you got that scratchy 7 inch I left you at ole FMU. Big ups to DJ Icepack! Maybe you should play Gloria by U2 in honor of Ms. Steinem? Read that article on her in the Sunday Times. My favorite part of that article was this excerpt:
Recently, she recalled, she met a young man in her travels and thought, “If I was younger, we’d have had a great passionate affair for two years and been friends the rest of our lives.”
  Tue. 3/25/14 10:18am Rick:

I'm a huge fan of Taika Waitit.
His short films are great, Eagle vs Shark is flawed, but has a lot of heart and some great moments.
He directed some of the best Flight of the Conchords episodes, and is not only a good singer, comic actor and artist, but is seriously smoking hot.

I recomend starting with 2 cars, 1 night, and Tama Tu and taking it from there.
There's stuff on his page that wasn't there last time I looked!

Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:48am Cecile:

I'm sure there will be more, but you know the pledge drive tapped a lot of people out. Maybe Kate needs to be more considerate about her comeback to touring. :D

you can just keep playing Sun Ra all day if you want
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 10:53am Guido from Cologne:

Kate B. was out of touring since 1979 !?
I remember her shows were complete with a lot of choerography and everything, but even with a considerable amount of playback (had read concert reviews at the time).

I was the oldest girl in a family with older parents, so I had to learn stuff 3rd hand and also from hand me down comics.

I tend to like storylines rather than books. My favorites were Daredevil losing his powers, Dark Phoenix, all of Howard the Duck and Thor battling Galactus.

is this the wonderful singer that passed on way too soon? She sang in Spanish, French and English and was from Canada?
  Tue. 3/25/14 11:33am RHenderson:

Had no idea that John Lurie could do a passable Pharoah Sanders imitation. As I know that he's a favorite of yours - inexplicably - I'll leave it at that.

Spanish? Or was it Portuguese?
A heartbreaking young loss.

I once took a duck-calling class. That was a "hailing" call.

They do that when they need a cab?
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 11:41am tim from champaign:

@Brian - cool! Do all ducks make that call? I usually associate it with Mallards. I love waterfowl so much. One of the bummers about living in the cornfields of central Illinois is that there's hardly any water, hence no ducks.

Did a birthday animation for a friends 50th birthday, ending the whole thing with duck calls.

Indeed!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 11:45am βrian:

I'm not sure, but I think it's a common call for ducks in the midwest, anyway. The equivalent of "Hey, good-lookin. Come flock with us."

saw these cats at a middle school in Cobble Hill - incredible!

I heard the first few notes of this and thought, "Who were we just talking about Marc Ribot with? Oh yeah, Kurt and his friend Urania, who know him and his manager."
