I'm seeing the Nakatani Gong Orchestra tonight. I'm stoked. Doubly so because my wife will be playing in the gong orchestra. She said the practice last night was a lot of fun.

Avatar Thu. 3/13/14 4:10pm still b/p:

Some of my favorite Maltese Falcon lines are whacked ones from Sydney Greenstreet:
"Talking's something you can't do judiciously unless you keep in practice. Now, sir. We'll talk, if you like. I'll tell you right out. I'm a man who likes talking to a man who likes to talk."
  Thu. 3/13/14 4:10pm Bjornscht:

Donj't forget Ward Bond and Elisha Cook
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:11pm kat330:

  Thu. 3/13/14 4:13pm Robert:

I haven't seen the whole movie, but I've read the novel, and all that funny stuff is verbatim from the novel.
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:14pm kat330:

And "The Night Of The Iguana," too, of course.
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:15pm Cecile:

I've never seen that one, but I love Prizzi's Honor - surprisingly true to the book.

Thanks for the show today DJ Fabio. And also the typewriter stylings of the commenters.
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:17pm Cecile:

I have never seen Violent Saturday, but it's a hell of a book.
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:18pm dc pat:

oh man, Night of the Iguana--gotta be one Burton's best films
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:19pm Cecile:

Ill Wind by WL Heath (Violent Saturday author) is also an excellent book.
  Thu. 3/13/14 4:21pm Robert:

I've also read that nearly all of that version of "The Maltese Falcon" was verbatim from Hammet's novel, and that the earlier & later films of it were more loosely adapted. The interesting thing everybody notes is that there's never been a movie adapt'n of "Red Harvest" by that name.
Avatar Thu. 3/13/14 4:22pm still b/p:

Night of the Iguana has really good moments. And...ohhhhh, Ava. And Ava's maraca-playing household accessories -- the always-on-call, shirtless boy-toys -- are a laugh.
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:22pm steve:

Je'Taime Je'Taime - had to write a paper on that in college... cool movie, i remember thinking it was kinda David Lynchian.
  Thu. 3/13/14 4:23pm Clay:

Just chiming in to say thanks for your pledges last week during STF and TDS. What a fun time it was! I wish it were Marathon 24/7. All right, Fab. I'm heading over there soon. On-air chest bump in order! Pidge

Avatar Thu. 3/13/14 4:24pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

is that like a "socialist fist-bump," pigeon?
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:25pm kat330:

Iguana gives you blokes Ava, BUT TMWWBK gives us gals Connery AND Caine -- double bang for the buck.
  Thu. 3/13/14 4:26pm Clay:

Rev. --- It is in the tradition of the Barack/Michelle terrorist fist bump. Definitely inspired by that!

Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:29pm dc pat:

what's wrong with Richard Burton??
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:30pm kat330:

Figure I should return the favor once in a while.

The extra fun of Connery in TMWWBK is his playing the "dumb blond" role.
Avatar Thu. 3/13/14 4:30pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

AW MAN, so the "she was a visitor" thing was Ashley as well? I've loved the jabbering HELL out of this piece every time it comes up. Not terribly familiar with Robert A.'s material, didn't connect... waah..
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:30pm dc pat:

speakin' a' which: anybody ever see Candy? where Burton plays a poet with wind constantly blowing in his long hair? funny.

Avatar Thu. 3/13/14 4:32pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

aaah, DCP, I'm a huge fan of Terry Southern's books. Never saw the film of Candy...

We just watched Rip Torn in "Payday" on Sunday. While watching I realized how there is such an immediate recognition of films in that era. Something about the cinematography, dialogue and, of course, always a couple of scenes of bared female breasts.
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:36pm common:

ah man, definately watch candy and the magic christian, rev!
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:36pm dc pat:

the magic christian is pretty hilarious, and Ringo is great in it.

Speaking of films very much of their period -- saw a promo for a showing of Shampoo coming up. Have watched it, but never could get very enthusiastic about the picture despite the....lather it seems to have created.
Thu. 3/13/14 4:41pm distracted by the words:

So good thanks!
  Thu. 3/13/14 4:41pm Bjornscht:

Requiescat, Mr. Ashley. This is reminding me of those video interviews he used to do with fellow luminaries...Terry Riley sitting in a beach chair by a spring freshet.
Avatar Thu. 3/13/14 4:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

yeh, I adore the film of The Magic Christian. Didn't realize John Astin was in Candy (he was the One True Gomez, after all) -- a spiritual hero of mine...
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:42pm dc pat:

Hey I watched your countrymen Dimitrov play tennis the other day--he's got a mean one-hand backhand.

Exactly Rev. He was the master at Gomez.
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:43pm Cecile:

I saw Shampoo and loved it. It's a very low-key movie and pretty unflinching its appraisal of the Warren Beatty character.
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:43pm kat330:

@dc pat: Spoiler alert: the female breasts in that era were REAL. I gather those breasts au naturel disappoint Generation X and beyond.

love gomez. also love: "one hot doggie you shall havie!"
Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 4:44pm Cecile:

Avatar    Thu. 3/13/14 5:19pm Carmichael:

Yes, Dale. The Pinkerton agent, played by Mickey Rooney, had been chasing Evil Roy for years. He tapped the morse code out until his index finger was a stump. He insisted a folk song was written about him. Later in the movie, you can hear a guy around the fire strumming a guitar, singing "Stubby Index Finger".
Avatar Thu. 3/13/14 5:19pm Whooda:

@Milson I remember the dentist in the early 80's who, after his female patients were 'under' would help himself to a BJ from the unconsious patient in the chair.
At the time I wore a found button that read, "My reputation rests in your mouth". My boss thouht that was pretty funny (he was a old gay man).
