"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:41am bibi:

hey malcolm, you are blond ! it makes 2.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:45am Malcolm:

blondes have more fun, especially if they are shetland ponies!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:46am Prashanth:

feeling very restless today...but the music is soothing. Thanks John.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:48am bibi:

yeah. or if wearing an impossible 70s haircut and a shiny static mic.
a pity these stars can be clicked just once, this backyard was brilliant.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:48am Prashanth:

reminds me of Karl-Heinz Stockhausen
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:52am maestroso:

G'morning John, George, Pierre, Bibi, Malcolm & Prashanth!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:53am Prashanth:

@bibi and Malcolm: I have a theory about why many, esp. in Asia, consider blondes as attractive. Its simple: blonde reminds us of Gold...and Gold is often conditioned in our brains as a sign of prosperity, luxury, something superior. Hence, the attraction.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:53am Prashanth:

'morning, Maestroso! welcome to the banter republic :)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:54am bibi:

have you intentionnally chosen different languages' tunes or is his discography widely multilingual ?
hi maestroso.
i think prashanth is right, we are signs of luxury malcolm.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:57am fred von helsing:

Malcolm X asked why the white blonde was a cultural ideal. But it is not just his culture. People who've been to the Middle East tell me the same thing.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 6:57am Prashanth:

@bibi: a sign for luxury isn't luxury itself :) Remember roadrunner cartoons?? signs dont work with clever Roadrunners :P
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:03am AndrewC.:

Best thing about being a white blonde, its hard to see I'm going grey. Plus everyone treating me like a cutural ideal of course.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:03am bibi:

argh.
seriously, it was initially sexually attractive to sapiens sapiens who migrated to (northern) europe.
i think now it's more about the omnipotency of western (european rooted) culture.
if it was just about rareness albinos would be the sexual ideal.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:05am pierre:

Also Blond has a connotation of purity, and clean. Whereas dark hair and red hair has both connotations of adventures / temptations.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:07am Prashanth:

@Fred: I dont think its whiteness that counts because what would explain south asians increasingly coloring their hair blonde?.... it also has a social conditioning factor like advertisement models since 50s...the number of blonde models is astoundingly high...and thus the perception of beauty which unfortunately is conditioned by the ad industry is increasingly biased towards blondes.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:07am Prashanth:

@Pierre: Gold...purest metal.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:11am Prashanth:

personally, for no factual reason, I tend to have less trust towards blondes than non-blondes. I dont know where that comes from but its definitely innate. May be its because I never grew up with blondes in my class or friend circles.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:12am bibi:

i think since cultures settled, cultures decide what are the canons (only canons).
in middle ages, slightly fat girls were the regular canon.

@bibi: 'healthy' girls are always attractive to male hormones...dem child bearing hips cannot lie :P
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:17am George of Troy:

"Purposeful Lady..." was my gateway to Ashley, eons ago listening to late night college radio. I didn't realize it was him until years later, but that piece really stuck with me (as most of his work has done since).
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:21am Prashanth:

they should include the Spaceship in Buddha Box
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:21am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I have read that the blonde thing is because it evokes youth & hence youthful vitality - many times people are blonde in toddlerhood & change - & vulnerability & so femininity like that
- & also the genetic selection argument that it is a genetically recessive trait (as is red hair) ; demoralizing to think all one's Romantic notions come down to Darwinist instincts (like the hips, flushed lips & cheeks, &tc.) like this - but here we are...
- If it's breeding instinct for a rarer trait though - why are blonde woman desirable but not so much blond men (like myself) - ?? Barbie is Blonde & Ken is Brunette; this points to Culture more - after all - the ideals of weight & style change greatly even in our own Culture (whatever that is) - & I always think of African customs of distending necks w/ several rings or lip plates - or Japanese ideals being different from 'The West's' - &tc. ...Probably things like weight ideals are an interaction of Instinct & Culture - w/ Culture & changing conditions playing on different instinctual triggers @ different times...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:23am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- like - lipstick - how weird is that if you think about it...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:24am Prashanth:

@RRabbit: "why are blonde women desirable but not men"...good question.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:26am Prashanth:

here's a nice article "The American image of beauty: Media representations of hair color for four decades" written back in 1993. See reults in abstract. link.springer.com...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:28am Prashanth:

in short the authors write: The percentage of
blondes in each magazine, averaged across the past four decades, exceeded the 26.8% base rate of blondes in a White female sample. Assuming this base rate to be representative of the population from which it was drawn, this reveals that society's beauty standards of hair color conveyed by these media did not truly represent the population. This image delivers a message to society that blonde is a prominent ideal of feminine beauty. This message may have contributed to our cultural preoccupation with blondeness, much as media messages about thinness have fostered a distorted view of women's body weight and shape
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:28am maestroso:

Wow, this Wha Ha Ha is unfamiliar to me. Rare stuff.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:29am Brian in UK:

Hello John & co. Sterling H&M work last Sunday.
Bottle & blond are a marriage made in (a cosmetic factory)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:30am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Barbie - based on a German whore cartoon...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:31am Sem Chumbo:

And yet, why are there so few brunette jokes?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...which is not saying I don't like tall thin blondes, of course...it would be hypocritical in my case, after all...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:41am Prashanth:

haha JA...blonde on blonde... you'll never know me... so true :)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:22am Alessia:

I guess, but it's only a supposition, that blonde recalls childhood, innocence and purity, instigating in men's brain the will of giving protection and tenderness which is a thing that a woman doesn't desire to feel towards a man, that's why women tend to mate with dark dudes for example.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:48am common:

good morning john. everyone.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:52am George of Troy:

Fantastic set this morning, John.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:57am bibi:

i cannot blondify the star for this track, and this is an issue, john.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:58am bibi:

thx john, you are so reactive for solving blond problems.
nearly suspicious.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:59am John Allen:

no more dirty blonde jokes!
