'Evening, all. Bleurgh, a bit tipsy and might pass out soon, heavy week so far, but I'm glad FMU is out there.

So far been lucky in BK: moved to Carroll Gardens in 2001, still only (only!) pay $1,650 a month for a one bedroom.

You want crazy rents, try San Francisco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35am

Lived there too, from '95-'98, though I managed to live in a house where the most I paid was $285, on Oak between Buchanan and Laguna, when the Central Freeway was still there. Now, of course, it's ridiculous...

Speaking of Montreux, any Alexis Cole, who's performed there a couple of times? Amazing vocalist.

Rent is expensive here, but in downtown LA there are still SROs and dingy old apts, we have only begun to gentrify. SF is saturated, there is no poor part of town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am
mariano:

Never lived in LA, but a lot of the most formative music and films for me are LA-based, the whole 80s LA hardcore scene, plus movies like Repo Man, Pulp Fiction, Chinatown, and Mulholland Drive.

That is an amazing video. It's amazing how different species seem to know how to ask eachother for help. A cat once stopped me and tried to get me to cut out a knot -- it kept shoving the knot into my hand when I would try to pet it. Strange cat, it also posed for this pic: 31.media.tumblr.com...
You can see how much fur there was to get matted.

@Mariano - love all films you mentioned, esp. Chinatown. LA Confidential?

Hey DJs, all: ever heard of Stony Island, a long-neglected 70s film about a struggling Chicago funk band? Great movie, leads all played by real funk musicians, all music, far as I can tell, recorded live:

I bought that Les McCann CD (Swiss Movement) 16+ years ago at a famous Manhattan record shop: The Colony on B'way at Times Square. Anyone remember that store? They had so many great hard-to-find titles in stock before the internet days. Thanks for playing it; brought back so many great memories. I heard fmu play that record when it was first released back around 1973 I think. I love it when fmu plays those old hits from yesteryear.

@CDT: don't remember that store, moved to NYC in '98. Lots of things, like Kim's, have closed doors since I've been here, sadly.

Hi mariano, yep, you're right about things changing fast. The Colony was located on the northwest corner of B'way and 49th. Do yourself a favor and go to this site to read about The Colony. It might make you cry, but if you went there like I did, you will cry. Go here:

No please, @CD: living here is heartbreaking enough as it is! Used to work at 1585 B'Way. Will go to the site though. In other news: I'M THE SLIIIIIIIIME!!!!!

No you're not, mariano, I am. Ever see FZ perform that song on SNL? He had this huge TV on stage that at the right moment, hundreds or thousands of gallons of this disgusting slime poured out. It was absolutely great. I have it on dvd if you need it. You should try to view it on YouTube if it's posted. Greatest Slime performance ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57am
mariano:

No way, @CD! I remember, as a kid, seeing Zappa performing "Dancing Fool" live on SNL, but never "I'm the Slime." Thanks a mill for pointing me in the right direction. Btw, ever see Zappa in '63 on the Steve Allen Show?

Hey Mariano, recently, while listening to fmu, I've heard SOMETHING regarding Zappa Plays Zappa but I don't know what it was in reference to. Can you or anyone help me? I think I heard Irene Trudel talk about tickets to Zappa Plays Zappa but that tour is over so I don't know what it was about. Any help from anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44am
mariano:

No idea, sorry, @CD. Was it maybe Dweezil on tour?
Avatar 2:46am
CDToaster:

Mariano, I don't know; all I heard was ZPZ and tix for Friday but that tour is over. Not a problem, I'll just listen to her show again on the archive. It was a great show anyway and definitely worth hearing again. Thanks for the turn-on again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50am
mariano:

@CD: yeah, you too! Brought back some memories, that video. Write Irene -- in my limited experience FMU DJs are very cool about writing back, especially about music matters.
Avatar 3:02am
CDToaster:

Thanks for the advice, Mariano. You are correct.

Jay Schiavone:

I might have gone with Major Lance's version of "Gypsy Woman," which Curtis produced for his own label.
