A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I'll admit (w/ shock? shame? why bother?) that V.Ice was actually a catchy bit of disposableness. My gripe would still be it leans too heavily on the Queen sample - but that's a wider issue...

You don't have to be proper to be sexy in my cosmos, but damn, keep your clothes on and insinuate the sexy.

The only band I ever thought had a really boring stage presence was Low. I was banned from seeing them because I would drink too heavily to keep from being bored to death.

- well - Townshend's never missed an opportunity to gush about Hendrix' performance: He says the Wh♂ were an Act - his ArtSkool installation
- but Jimi was like ballet - really expressing something w/ all means available...
- It seems clear Jimi really resented the obligation to do so later though - in his just 3&1/2 years of accelerated time...

@Cecille In response to your complaint Low has added twerking to their stage act.

I mean I don't want people to perform in hazmat suits or burkas, but the music has to come first. I cut someone like Freddy Mercury a lot of slack because he had such ridiculous vocal skills. And a great sense of humor.

I would like to add only that I had to look up "twerking" on Urban Dictionary. Also "ratchet culture".

I agree. And I love Patti Smith, who is definitely in that mold. But as much as I love them, I really love the concept of a Bryan Ferry coming out in a suit. Or Johnny Mathis! Or just the punk energy which was sexual, but also rowdy and energetic and inclusive.

I'm just not surprised that someone who played something as shallow as Hannah Montanah would turn 20 and become the girl that chose clubbing and talking about sex as her way to come of age.

Devo were about as asexual as you can get, but their stage show was astonishing and brilliant.
Avatar 11:25am

...it'a about these contempo. Pop Performers putting the fine point on the question of what place Performance has in relation to Music. Performance is an Art & always been part of ShowBiz - but if you came out of that Kulture of stoned people listening to 12" slabs of vinyl - you have quite different sensibilities...

- In discussing these people these days - one is always countered w/
- 'Yes - but they're a great Performer!'
- Sure - so is the elephant in the circus & the fleas - but I don't wanna *listen* to 'em all the time...

Cecile, I get bored easily at concerts, but Low's live show transfixed me a couple of times, just from the music alone, no stage presence required. I actually found their live show a bit less interesting as they added electricity and grew less glacial.

- Peter Buck put it really well (paraphrase): I thot w/ Dylan & all that, we'd evolved past the Las Vegas Show idea of Pop - but it's back...

to each their own, Ike. I think I would have loved their 30 minutes of feedback show at a high-profile fundraiser, recently, though, if only to watch the audience.

I love a good show. If/when Kylie Minogue tours again, I will be there. But then again, she has some kind of artistic sensibility and puts genuine feeling into their work.
Avatar 11:32am
Cecile:

Hell, if Miley modelled herself after Kylie, that wouldn't be a terrible way to go. Acting in her 20s, getting involved with smart, interesting artistic men, working to learn the craft of making dance records, planning her own career.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& Kylie defines a kind of sexuality. There's no getting around it...

hell, Miley should even talk to Cher. She flipped houses and sold them so she had the money to come back to entertainment on her own terms.
Avatar 11:35am

And she's so charming. I saw this clip from Paris (where she has tons of fans) where she's doing a live TV bit, and her audience is EVERYONE - 8 to 80, every color. And she's talking to them onstage in French and they are dying from the joy.

- w/ all these tweeny Popsters - you get the heavy sense that every move is carefully calculated by Handlers & Corporates - which is not a Statement that interests me. I appreciate people like Madonna & Gaga can make some sort of statement (?) w/ Media Manipulation - but again, why should I *listen*??...
- The Doctor is trippy but Camp is relevant there too...

Miley Cyrus has a problem regarding the fact that her performance on two songs doesn't have either contrast and therefore lack sensibility. Plus her non stop appearance on the media doesn't show us a very balance personna, her character is only in one direction (pun not intended). It's all marketing, it's a big heatless fat marketing

Indeed !
- it's all a symptom of Media being taken over by Corporates w/ no Artistic Sensibilities
- sure people in the Biz have always wanted Hits & $Money
- but they had enuff sense to do so by making good stuff.
- & it's not just Music - *everything* is owned by one Corporation that's consolidated by yet a bigger Corporation - not by people who either know or care about that Product.
- Including our Government (bought & sold).

I heard your recommendation in the car, Trouble...I gotta get those records. Unfortunately, I also read Adrian's post, which said that I should get both vinyl AND CD copies. Was planning to get the vinyl, but apparently it lacks all of the tracks... (sigh) I'll add it to the list.
Thanks for your great show.
