Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

It's an inscrutable day in the neighborhood;
Won't you be my neighbor?
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:05pm other eddie:

this sounds nothing like the topeka in my head.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:06pm Doug Schulkind:

I had such a crush on the student who played the stewardess in my college's production of Company back in 1981.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:06pm fleep:

Saw this on B'way with Dean Jones and Elaine Stritch.

Chris Spedding on guitar here....
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:12pm still b/p:

"Barcelona" will remind me forever of its performance when I was a teen-aged stage crew apprentice at a Jersey dinner theater. I learned on FMU fairly recently that the place became a regional music venue of note in later decades.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:13pm Uncle Michael:

Hi Tate...didn't hear you come in...
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:14pm Stanley:

Hi everyone.
I'm just in and getting down Friday-stylee.
Planning to dink a bunch of beers later on.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

Love that Bobby Darin song!
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:17pm Uncle Michael:

It is, Doug.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:18pm pacific standard simon:

Surprised - thought this was a different Tull song.

Hot spots aplenty.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:20pm Michael:

That image is from something familiar but I can't put my finger on it.

I think it's from 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:23pm fleep:

Steve Miller track name needs an edit. The Vicodin must be kicking in.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:24pm Artie:

Sounding a lot like Steve Winwood on this track.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:26pm Stanley:

Hydrododone! Vicodin! Beer! Is there anyone here who's not in pain?

I may be conflating the memory of seeing "Company" with the cast album, then, I can only vouch for Stritch, only because years later she guest starred in a show I wrote. Did my parents throw away all my old Playbills? Of course they did!

Spanky and them guys were one of the biggest surprises when I started re-evaluating all my youthful musical prejudices and affectations. I really like them.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:40pm Doug Schulkind:

Here's to the DJs who can't get lunch after their shows because they are compelled to remain at their machines listening to the radio shows that follow theirs.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:40pm fleep:

Here's the thing, when I'm wrong, I like to be very very wrong. I just found the Playbill, and I was wrong on both counts. That brain cell went south long ago. Not only did I see it with Larry Kert's *understudy*, I saw it with Jane Russell. Thank you for the correction.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:41pm Brian in UK:

Bob Dorough had an influence on Spanky around this period.
Is that your slipper in the back room?
Fri. 5/24/13 12:41pm Man at office desk:

You rock, Topeka.

Those maracas look tasty, Doug. Try some wing sauce.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:44pm Doug Schulkind:

I prefer salsa verde on my maracas.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:47pm fleep:

Must. Not. Reminisce. Leave it to the pros.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:48pm still b/p:

So Duane plays Spanky's "I'd Like to Get to Know You" a couple of years ago, and I comment that it reminds me of that number in a particular variety show appearance that I describe, and -- this one few-minute thing from television more than 40 years earlier? -- Duane knows it, says it was the Sullivan show AND he's got it on DVD and it s a favorite. Ain't that somethin'?
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:50pm fleep:

Duane's a pro.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:53pm pacific standard simon:

That Spanky song (that UM played) was the official campaign song for John Lindsay's 1972 presidential run.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:53pm still b/p:

I think those Pudding guys only did a quarter-tab at most of whatever makes the bus magic.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:54pm hyde:

Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 12:56pm G:

Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 1:28pm still b/p:

I love the ol' Perry. Some like that one are funny, when the song suggests something riled or raw-revved or rockin' is goin' on, but it's still just....Perry.
Avatar Fri. 5/24/13 1:35pm Uncle Michael:
