Options March 25, 2013: Radio Passover: Baby Got Backlash + The New Birthday Song
For the next Radio Free Culture, join Andrea and her Grandma Phyllis for Radio Passover. While the two munch matza and bitter herbs, they'll present a selection of stories about the intersections between music, technology and copyright law. First up, a story about theft in plain sight. Hear nerd king Jonathan Coulton describe how his cover of "Baby Got Back" ended up an an episode of the Fox TV show Glee unbeknownst to him. Then an update on the FMA and WFMU's attempt to dethrone "Happy Birthday to You," including the radio debut of the winning song.

If there are JM in the AM archives available, there was some presentation this morning about Passover. It aired just after 8AM, I believe.

OOO that spread
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:05pm Ike:

I'm SO chuffed the archives exist, as usual, because I leave work shortly and will miss most of this show.

Great GIF of "yeah that's bitter," BTW.
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:06pm Mike East:

@Ken - I heard that. I commented to my wife about how much effort and attention to detail seems to be involved.
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:07pm Mike East:

@Ken - most interesting fact I heard was the reason they "lean" when they drink the wine....cuz Screw you Romans! Where are you now?!
  Mon. 3/25/13 6:08pm Pops:

Speaking of copyright issues... ♫ "Little Boxes / On the hillside" ♫ and ♫ "It's your birthday / It's your birthday" ♫ = same tempo + notes. Copyright issues aside, there rightfully should be an attribution given to Malvina Reynolds by Blank Tapes.

what was the intro song 2 this program?
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:10pm Ike:

No JM tomorrow morning so we get to hear DJ Marty McSorley over the air instead. I will dig that.
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:19pm Dr. Goot:

Great Show! - www.youtube.com...
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:21pm Andrea:

Any questions for Grandma Phyllis? She's dancing to Baby Got Back now...
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:24pm Andrea:

The intro music was Yacht's "Shangri-La (Instrumental)" available for a free download on the Free Music Archive: freemusicarchive.org...
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:25pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I saw a headline today on the NBC news web site "Shocking new research shows Holocaust even worse than thought"

www.nbcnews.com...

Has she heard that news story?
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:26pm Andrew Waterloo:

This story is a bit jaw dropping.
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:28pm Special Man:

Recontextualising a song by making a cover of it in a different style is such a commonplace idea that it seems a bit self-righteous to be whining about someone doing another pretty similar cover.
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:36pm Danne D:

Very entertaining RFC :)
And Andrea' grandma seems cool :)
Have a good Seder :)
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:42pm Dr. Goot:

Appropriation is the feast of life, violence has become the condiment.
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:43pm Snortley:

So Moses goes up on Mt. Sinai, and the Lord says, "You gotta take my commandments down to my people." Moses says, "OK, how much do they cost?" The lord says, "Nothing, they're free." So Moses says, "In that case, I'll take ten!"
  Mon. 3/25/13 6:44pm amEdeo:

GRANDMA PHYLLIS!!!!
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:48pm Andrea:

Any questions for everyone's new jewish Grandma, my cohost Grandma Phyllis?
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:48pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I wish RFC was every week.
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:49pm Dr. Goot:

Ha, love the Birthday medley!!! Thanks for a great show!
  Mon. 3/25/13 6:51pm FrankenNewYork:

I've been using the first verse of They Might Be Giants' "Time" as a birthday song for years now, it's easy to sing and short.
Mon. 3/25/13 6:53pm jay inthe woods:

Now Kiss From a Rose is a great birthday song.
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:56pm Danne D:

I wonder if that story about the Martin Luther King movie was part of the inspiration for Stevie Wonder to do his Happy Birthday song in honor of Dr. King
Mon. 3/25/13 6:56pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Ha! The greeting-card business was an old Maxwell Smart cover.
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 6:57pm Jeff:

OMG! RMS!
Mon. 3/25/13 7:00pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Happy Passover from the Gentile side, grandma!
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 7:00pm Danne D:

Have a wonderful Seder, Andrea and Grandma Phyllis and all observing :)
Avatar Mon. 3/25/13 7:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

"There's no ice here for my drink. Waahhh!" Modern problems, right? Most of us have it pretty good these days.
  Tue. 3/26/13 7:46pm Ann Salmon:

So happy to receive this.....but slow to download. A note to dear Grandma Phyllis...so glad I met you and had you stay with us here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. You taught me to bake the Kugel. Going to share this with my Bible study group.
