Sat. 9/24/11 11:13am Jay/ London:

good afternoon Michael just checking in to the number one hits :)

Sat. 9/24/11 11:15am fred:

Hi Michael
That's a timely show for me: I just finished reading John Swenson's New Atlantis, a great book about musicians in NO and how they dealt with Katrina's aftermath

Sat. 9/24/11 11:19am Amanda:

Hooray for this show! Hanging out with friends, amid nonstop great music and food, made for a total #1 hit vacation.

Sat. 9/24/11 11:38am glenn:

deke dickerson also has a fantastic web site.

Sat. 9/24/11 11:42am Michael:

http://muleskinner.blogspot.com/ & a blog!

Sat. 9/24/11 11:43am Peter:

Deke is great. He takes Enon, Ohio's Crazy Joe Tritschler with him for some trio gigs where Deke,Joe and Sugarballs all switch instruments throughout their sets.

Sat. 9/24/11 11:52am BigJay:

Now yer singing my song. LA'S BEST

Sat. 9/24/11 12:02pm kme in chi:

neo-whaaha??

Sat. 9/24/11 12:03pm Fine Wine:

Ah, the show that woulda coulda shoulda been...

Sat. 9/24/11 12:10pm glenn:

to be honest, al hirt's version of java is way better.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:14pm Fine Wine:

I pronounced it (for the first time) "too-SAN." just taking a stab.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:15pm glenn:

he's on an episode or two of treme. i think he pronounces it two - saint, but i could be wrong.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:15pm Michael:

Glenn, we disagree. FW, ahhhh!

Sat. 9/24/11 12:16pm glenn:

floyd cramer also does a pretty good version of java.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:18pm T-Zero:

Michael says it correctly: tuːseɪnt/

Sat. 9/24/11 12:21pm Fine Wine:

there's how it SHOULD be pronounced and there's how it IS pronounced. i was basing my pronunciation on the name he used at the beginning of his career: TOUSAN.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:22pm glenn:

5 packs a day? i'm surprised he can sing, much less breathe.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:23pm T-Zero:

Ah! Well, you would know better than I, FW. Thanks!

Sat. 9/24/11 12:24pm Fine Wine:

One big revelation from Tousan was the etymology of DEESU and SANSU, two of his record labels: creole slang for"gimme 10 cents" and "gimme 5 cents," respectively.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:24pm T-Zero:

Really enjoying this show, btw.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:25pm Fine Wine:

T-Zero: i don't know any better than you. just guessing based on available info.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:26pm Amanda:

The suits were cool but I also liked Lazy Lester in a T-shirt and jeans the whole time.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:26pm Mike Sin:

This has been a great show. I'm getting a nice education as well!

Sat. 9/24/11 12:27pm T-Zero:

FW: Heh, I'm just still waiting for someone on WFMU to play Eric Lindell lol

Sat. 9/24/11 12:28pm glenn:

b? i figure c minus, tops.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:30pm drr:

Eric Lindell, with the unfortunate neck tattoo...

Sat. 9/24/11 12:32pm Fine Wine:

More acoustic guitar on a soul song!

Sat. 9/24/11 12:33pm glenn:

huh. for some reason, i always thought booker t. wrote mustang sally.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:34pm T-Zero:

drr: I know he has a lot of tats but never noticed what the neck tat says.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:35pm drr:

I think it's the name of his kid...just one of those things that 'seemed like a good idea at the time'.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:36pm glenn:

neck tattoos are NEVER EVER a good idea.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:37pm T-Zero:

Oh. Yeah. That's right. It says "Mercy". But I don't know why that's unfortunate.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:37pm Hackensack Slim:

Arch Hall was good when playing his own songs. They got bad when playing long versions of Stormy Monday, etc. Dr Ike usually prevents that kind of behavior. He must have been having dinner at the time. It was a good opportunity to get some fresh air.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:41pm glenn:

maybe stax should have hired better lawyers.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:41pm Fiveash:

Great show, Michael. I can back you up on the fact that Gaylord said the funniest thing ever uttered... Allen Toussaint also set us up for some good laughs with his observations on Cosimo Matassa's late 50s/early 60s wardrobe.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:50pm Julian:

great tunes!

Sat. 9/24/11 12:53pm drr:

what glenn said, basically.

Sat. 9/24/11 12:58pm Michael:

The New Tork Times: "In May 1969 alone Stax released 27 albums and 30 singles." : http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/16/arts/music/16sont.html?pagewanted=all SCOTT YOU OWE ME A DOLLAR

Sat. 9/24/11 4:28pm Bob:

Great show, as usual. Michael, your observation about the equipment the guys often used is perfect. I cringe when I see one of those stupid pegless bass guitars, the worst!
