Sun. 3/27/11 7:28pm Cold Sesame Noodles:

Years ago, my pal Moses ran into Roland Alphonso on the streets of Bed-Stuy. "Hey Rollie," Moses called out to him (all the members of the Skatallites had moved to Brooklyn at various points during the 1960s), "my friend on WFMU still plays your music, man." Moses said that Alphonso was deeply touched. He had felt for a long time that everyone had pretty much forgot about him.

Can you imagine such a thing?!
  Sun. 3/27/11 7:30pm monica:

Cold Ses in the house! great story...
Sun. 3/27/11 7:32pm Don (trip dub):

I forgot how difficult it must be to sustain great gospel vocals ona the extended 12". RIP Loleatta.
  Sun. 3/27/11 7:38pm cheri:

just to let you know monica that you're one of the greatest dee jays on fmu,, have i told you that before?? btw how's butter?
  Sun. 3/27/11 7:39pm Keithster:

Hi Monica, Great show. I'm thrilled to listen live instead of archive, woo woo!
Sun. 3/27/11 7:42pm Cold Sesame Noodles:

Well put, Cheri. Monica and Sunday evenings go together like lungs and oxygen.
  Sun. 3/27/11 7:49pm Azusa:

Just discovered this show (while washing the dishes)... what was the groovy background music you were playing (with the whistling) during your last break??? Made me feel like I was in an Italian movie from the 60s. Will definitely tune in next Sunday!
  Sun. 3/27/11 7:56pm phillyd:

Mmm, the most relaxing part of the weekend-Monica. The ONLY problem i have with the show (and WFMU) is that i can't download shows and put them on my MP3 player. But there are far bigger problems in the world.
  Sun. 3/27/11 7:56pm monica:

Greetings Keithster - swell to have you in real time! Cold Ses and Cherei, you guys are swell...Eevin', Azusa, that was " White Sheets, Tight Bed" by Mastretta - EZ to find on line. Can't tell you often I hear great tracks on WFMU while I'm washing dishes!!
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:06pm phillyd:

e-mail's on the way to passe as well!
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:07pm seang:

always liked Guy Trebay's articles in the style section--that dude can write
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:08pm matthew:

don't forget to call your mother, she'd love to hear from you!
Sun. 3/27/11 8:08pm person who never talks on the phone:

This Lotte Lenya's doing a great cover of that Doors song.
Sun. 3/27/11 8:08pm Don (trip dub):

Big ups to Fine Wine on his Fine compilation. I was just told A&R has gone the way of the rotary phone. I love the phone. Debbie Harry would sing now "You keep me texting on the cellophone." Marianne Faithfull got a new album. She would do a great version of this Doors song too. So would Marlene Dietrich.
Sun. 3/27/11 8:09pm ken in denver:

I remember when a ringing phone was a fun thing, a sign that somebody wanted to talk to me. That was before caller ID, in a time when the people calling were people I actually wanted to talk to.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:09pm son:

i haven't had a land line for years and can't see getting one again anytime soon, but you are totally right. my friends complain that i don't respond right away because now everyone expects that everyone else will have some quick access and MUST respond immediately!
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:10pm marc:

What;s playing now..."I tell you we must die?"
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:11pm Josh:

My phone at home is still connected to the wall by the cord. The receiver is on a long cord so I can talk to you while I pour the coffee in the kitchen.
A few days ago I saw an image of the old rotary dial phone ( I AM old enough to remember!) and wondered if my fingers would still know what to do with one.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:11pm Jeff M:

The back-and-forth humanity of phone calls has its appeal, and sometimes I enjoy chewin' the fat that way, but I have to say my first reaction when I hear that ring is to be annoyed that someone's interrupting my day and demanding immediate attention, instead of politely getting in the queue with an email. I really feel a mixture of dread and annoyance when I see that damned voicemail light blinking.

But we must still always maintain proper copper landlines and wear wristwatches, or those damned snotty Kids Today have won.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:12pm seang:

@marc--that's an old Kurt Weill/Brecht tune I think
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:12pm philosofish:

Still have a landline, but hate to hear it ring -- somebody either wants money or has bad news. Excellent show this is.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:12pm aido:

mona....i mostly use the phone for short conversations like "meet me here" or "meet me there". otherwise i skype if i want to bullshit. it's free. especially long distance. i.m. is a pain in the ass and my jitterbug daughter never answers the phone unless she has to. maybe she'll call back just to answer a question and that's it iknow what you mean, though.
Sun. 3/27/11 8:12pm Dave from Boonton:

I hate talking on the phone. I had a girl break up with me because I didn't call her often enough/wouldn't talk long enough on the phone for her (there were other reasons, but the phone thing was a major part in the break uop).

I miss doing business on the phone, though. I'm terrible with keeping up with my email with all the spam I get. I prefer actually talking to people for important stuff if I can't see them in person
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:16pm Dominick:

Still using a black rotary Western Electric 500 on my land line.
Use my cell for a pocket watch as much as a phone
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:17pm brucelh:

phillyd, you used to be able to go to archive.wfmu.org:5555, a publicly accessible directory of the DJ's archives, two-letter names, e.g. ML for our hostess, When you go to a DJ's archive page, you can see that an mp3 stream for the previous show is available for a week or two, after that it's just the RealMedia streaming archive. The cool thing, was you could go to archive.wfmu.org:5555/archive/ML, and download the mp3 archive, which you could then put on your mp3 player! Or edit out all that 'talk', and save it as a mix (ML: that's how played your Blossom Dearie tribute @ the PSFC, to great acclaim). I haven't been to the archive for a while, and, today, surprise, you get an Apache server page now!
BRING BACK wfmu.archive.org:5555!!!
Sun. 3/27/11 8:18pm Don (trip dub):

Jut like the PO and writing letters is goin' down. John Lennon would sing, "Hey waita minute Mr. Cell Carrier" just doesn't have as good a ring.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:20pm david:

These emperor penguins rock, Monica.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:21pm Emperor Penguins:

You mean: We RULE
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:22pm Jeff M:

Was Popeye Tuvan?
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:23pm aido:

is this poopdeck pappy on mushrooms?
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:23pm seang:

LOL Jeff M!
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:23pm son:

  Sun. 3/27/11 8:24pm Jeff M:

D'oh! Of course not. Mongolian.
Sun. 3/27/11 8:24pm Don (trip dub):

@Jeff M - Popeye: "Gee Olive you're awfully pretty." Olive - "You're pretty awful yourself, Popeye"
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:26pm marc:

@seang, ok, i don't see Kurt weill/Brecht on the playlist.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:27pm Jeff M:

Oh, wait. Tuva's *in* Mongolia? So much makes sense now.

I will gladly pay you in Tuva for a hamburger.... never mind.
Sun. 3/27/11 8:27pm Cold Sesame Noodles:

OK, now I'M freakin washing dishes. This thing is contagious. Turn it up to eleven, Monica.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:28pm listener gary:

Sunday evening ...dj Monica. Yes, Virginia, there is a civilization. Eureka! we have found it. Best...
Sun. 3/27/11 8:28pm Don (trip dub):

@CSN - Just lost my dinner. Can't find it anywhere. Jump, Jump, Jump.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:28pm monica:

Hi Marc, that was "Alabama Song" as performed by Lotte Lenya...Jeff M, that's what the article said - phone calls are an intrusion. But isn't that why God made Caller ID? .... Dave from Boonton, yes!I Find email way more difficult to manage. But I understand your ex's position - phone calls are more intimate...aido, skype? geez, i amd living in the stone age...philosofish, still a lot of Police Athletic Leagues out there looking for you $$$.....Thanks, david!...DTD, oh man P.O. is totally goin' down....much appreciated, brucelh....Dominick, get me a princess princess phone!...seang, zackly...Yay, Josh! Let's hear it for cords!...Hi Son, i understand if you've parted with it, you can't turn back. I'm still clinging to my old 212....ken in denver, ah the old days...phillyd, say it ain't so...
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:28pm seang:

@marc--that was the singer Lotte Lenya singing the Alabama Song by Brecht(words) and Weill(music)
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:29pm Jeff M:

marc: Alabama Song is Brecht/Weill. And Lotte Lenya is the queen of those songs. Oh, and was married to Kurt Weill.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:30pm listener gary:

...and as for my telephone, I have not used it in years. I have no cell, no texter, no none of that stuff. Bah hum bug. I vant to be aloone.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:31pm monica:

listener gary, i vill honor your request!...cold ses, as you wish!
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:31pm Jeff M:

  Sun. 3/27/11 8:36pm tomB:

As I was leaving for errands, I caught the amazing segue-in-synch from Never on Sunday to Crazy Arms. I return to find this brilliance unacknowledged. Mo, how do you keep the beat going in such disparate genres?
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:38pm Matt:

what's this version of i wanna be sedated playing in the background?
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:42pm JTKMDNY:

People don't know how to write or spell anymore (RUOK?), no less speak intelligentlly. And why would you want to engage in a two party conversation when you can control the content via Twitter so easily? TO me, our social skills have gone down precipitously since e-mail and its progeny.
Sun. 3/27/11 8:44pm Don (trip dub):

Nikki D's background vocalist is Suzanne Vega's great Philly tribute..
Sun. 3/27/11 8:44pm Ramones band arrangements:

Ramones Songbook As Played By Nutley Brass
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:44pm monica:

  Sun. 3/27/11 8:46pm marc:

Thank you MONICA. =)
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:50pm 867-5309:

Hello? You're selling something? Out to swindle are you? Going to tell me another loved one is dead? Threaten me physically or mentally?
Route to an unusable voicemail system.

Good reminder that 'in person' is always better.
  Sun. 3/27/11 8:50pm marc:
