September 24, 2008: special spacial program

Listen to this show: RealAudio

Artist Track Album Label Format Comments Year

Open Bar Mitzvah or Torah Torah Torah!
Thalia Zedek & Chris Brokaw of Come  Do I Love You?   Knitting On The Roof  Knitting Factory  CD  A little skit for the skittish, to begin the bumpy portion of the program. Bumpy because I was dazed from leaving the rural midwest, being thrust in Torah carrying fame for a Bar Mitzvah service in NJ, and then bouncing from the East Village to WFMU. Oi and Oy.  2000
J Mascis  a little ethnic song   Guitarrorists  No. 6  CD  Isn't that a quaint little title? I love songs that are soothing and sweet but repetitive to the point that they start to feel like water torture.  1991
Quickspace  Hadid   Hadid/Queen Of The Downs  Kitty Kitty Corporation  7"  Ecstasy was a terrible drug for me to try. This song reminds me of walking slowly up a Park Slope street, walking the dog I was dog sitting, walking with heavy feet to the apartment, putting on Hadid by Quickspace, and literally falling on the floor with a crash upon the first notes. I had a bruised forehead the following morning. It's a good record by the band that used to be Th' Faith Healers.  1998
Catherine Howe  It Comes With The Breezes   What A Beautiful Place  Numero  CD  This just has that early 70's feeling where psychedelia and easy listening connect and songs have titles like "It Comes With The Breezes". For some reason, someone told me if I liked this singer I would like the video of Patti Smith singing "You Light Up My Life". I can't see the connection, but if you are so inclined it's on youtube.  1971

Music behind DJ:
some
sort   of  animal    recorded  sounds

the slow steam rising off a coffee cup is selecting these songs
Josephine Foster  Garden Of Earthly Delights   The Coming Gladness  Bo'Weavil  CD  So incredibly beautiful, this feels like either the happiest or saddest music ever.  2008
Matteah Baim  Wounded Whale   Death Of The Sun  DiCristina  CD  A strangely calm song from this Metallic Falcons member, strange because I learned in school that a wounded whale reacts quite violently. By the way, I just saw this album for about $2 on Amazon and I recommend it highly!  2007
Spokane  Middle School   Little Hours  Jagjaguwar  2 LP  Over the past few years this band have created music that is beautiful and hushed. It's the perfect soundtrack for just before dawn, that moment when you have some senses alert and some asleep and everything feels like impressions.  2007
Gonzales  Armelodie   Solo Piano  Universal  CD  I didn't think I would fall for this one, being on the fence about Gonzales and his past music. But this really hits the spot in that melancholic, Erik Satie/Les Disques Du Crepuscule sort of way.  2005
Julie London  How Deep Is the Ocean?   Lonely Girl/Make Love To Me  EMI Gold    Gorgeous song sung by a voice of smoke, feathers, and sighs. 1956 recording, reissued in 2003.  1956.2003

weebles wobble but they don't fall down
The Mekons  Come And Have A Go If You Think You're Hard Enough   Me  Quarterstick  CD  This song makes me smile and want to start a drunken pillow fight in the back of a dark stinky sweaty bar.  1998
Kim Tolliver  Come & Get Me- I'm Ready   Come & Get Me- I'm Ready  Chess  CD-R  Outstanding soul singer, with great lines like "I'm serious as cancer/just waiting for your answer".  1973
David Thomas  Enthusiastic   More Places Forever  Twin Tone  LP  Amazing music from the singer behind Pere Ubu- definitely one of those "other 80's" albums that had the sort of emotional qualities many albums of the decade had but at the same time was completely in a different realm.  1985
La Volume Courbe  Ain't Go No/I Got Life   I Killed My Best Friend  Astralwerks  CD  French singer, with guests from My Bloody Valentine, as well as Hope Sandoval and David Roback, with a sideways version of the tune from Hair.  2006
Bobbie Gentry  Poppa Won't You Let Me Go To Town With You?   Chickasaw Country Child: The Artistry of Bobbie Gentry  Shout! Factory  CD  I always try to relate personally to every song I like, but when I try with this one it's disturbing. By the way, if ever you are bored have a look at the great Bobbie Gentry clips on youtube.  2003
Kris Kristofferson  Just the Other Side of Nowhere   Me And Bobbie McGee  Sony  CD  Just a sweet, sad, Lee Hazelwood-ish song that hits the spot.  1971

asleep in an elevator
Red Krayola  I'm So Blase   Hazel  Drag City  Vinyl  Of all the Red Krayola albums, some of them classics, this is the one that reaches me emotionally. There is a sense of the absurd that floats alongside a kind of sadness- this is the lead off song.  1996
Aluminum Group  Wheat & Tare   More Happyness  Empyrean Records  CD  This song is pure seduction, just close your eyes and drift in it and see if you don't agree.  2003
MC Honky  Soft Velvety 'Fer   I am the Messiah  Spinart  CD  There is probably something wrong with me that caused me to once cry while hearing this- there is something so casual and tragic about this and it just sort of sneaks up on you. By the way, it's a side thing for E of The Eels.  2003
Curtis Mayfield  Dirty Laundry   Dirty Laundry: The Soul of Black Country  Trikont  CD  This is something I sing while walking around the small town in Minnesota where I live- it's all too true. 2005 compilation, of course the song is from way back.  2005
Bill Drummond  Going Back   The Man  Creation  LP  A real left field album from Bill Drummond, of the KLF and former manager to Julian Cope/Teardrop Explodes, joined by members of The Triffids. There's something surreal and moving to hear him in his Scottish brogue singing this song.  1996

i was riding my bike down hill when i was thrashed by a raspberry and the impact almost made me fall off the bike, and to get my bearings i stopped and sat by a pond- this set is inspired by how that felt.
Kiwi Animal  Performance   Music Media  Sonic Squid  LP  Duo from New Zealand, one of whom needs to have his mouth washed out with soap.  1984
Will Rigby  Heart's Expired   Sidekick Phenomenom  Egon  LP  There's something of a beautiful animal with only 3 legs nature to this song. For me it captures just how pathetic and sweet love and the failure of it can be. Ex DB's member.  1985
Jad Fair & Kramer  California   Roll Out The Barrell  Shimmydisc  LP  There's something so tragic about the first line. & this captures the surreal psyche hallucination feel of the best Kramer productions. & a subdued Jad is pretty affective.  1988
The Monkees  Opening/The Porpoise Song   Head OST  Colgems / Rhino  CD  This psyche song from the freakout/60's comedown Monkees album and movie "Head" thoroughly captures for me what it was like to do whippits while listening to "We Are The World" in the back of a car in 1988.  1968
Hymie's Basement  You Die   Hymie's Basement  Lex  CD  The coupling of Andrew from Fog and the singer from Why? Another soundtrack to falling down slowly.  2003
The Instruments  Papillion   Papillion  Orange Twin  CD  After listening to this, it's hard to know if it was heard or dreamt- it's like the song version of angel food cake.  2007

cuddling up, cautiously
Claudine Longet  Sleep Safe   Cuddle Up With Claudine Longet  Munster  CD  This the creepiest "lullaby" type song next to Rosemary's Baby. If someone sang me this lullaby I would certainly have a gun under the pillow, just in case.  2003
Marina Celeste  Chansons de Helene   Cinema Enchante  MSI  CD  The singer from La Nouvelle Vague, from her album of songs from great French films (also released as a bonus disc with her Acidule album).  2007
Rose McDowall  Make It Easy On Yourself   Angel Of Ashes: A Tribute To Scott Walker  Transformadores  CD  A voice I have had a crush on since I first heard Strawberry Switchblade while in grade school. Rose brings out the sorrow and pleading desperation in the Scott Walker classic.  2005
Grouper  Invisible   Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill  Type  CD  Haunting and drifting, trance like and hypnotic. It reminds me of the title, but becoming lost in the fog while dragging the deer (can't think of why I would be doing that though) and not knowing what to do.  2008
Sybille Baier    Colour Green  Orange Twin  CD  Sad and fragile beauty, a bit like Vashti Bunyan and early Bridget St John if their music was cast in shadows. Recorded in the early 1970's.  1973.2006
Francoise Hardy  Why Even Try   One Nine Seven Zero  Universal  LP  From the 1970 English language album from Francoise, a beautiful record of folk with rock and psyche tones.  1970

Eyes Wide and Dreaming
Birdie  Sidewalk   Triple Echo  It  CD  Perfect indie pop from Birdie, starring Debsey from The Dolly Mixture and Paul from East Village.  2001
Nosotrash  Pez Globo   Cierra La Puerta Al Salir  Elefant  CD  One of my very favorite Spanish indie pop bands, chill up the spine minor chord loveliness.  2005
Celia Cruz  Es la Humanidad   Son con Guaguanco  Nascente  CD  Perfection....  1968/2008
Emma Nordenstam  Bryggen   Sanger 18-22  Vesper  Tape  The sister of Stina Nordenstam.  2007
Marisa  Taberna da Glória   Viagem  CDR  CD-R  Beautiful early 70's Brazillian singer.  1973
Lisa Li Lund  All My Trials   Li-Lund Ran Away  Smoking Gun  CD  I love her voice! Lisa also sings with Herman Dune, and this is from her solo album- covering a great song, and joined by some of the lovely folks from NYC's Olive Juice studios.  2005

Music behind DJ:
some
sort   of  animal    recorded  sounds

onto the off ramp, slowly
Marissa Nadler  Diamond Heart   Songs III: Bird on the Water  Peacefrog (UK)  CD  I used to go to a club on St Marks (before it moved) called Sine, and my favorite thing would be when a song was so beautiful that it held the audience spellbound to the point you could hear a feather fall. This is definitely the sort of song that would get that reaction.  2007
Richard Youngs  I Am The Weather   Autumn Response  Jagjaguwar  CD  This album is an experience, it honestly is unlike any other I have heard- twisted, nerve wracking, and beautiful all at once.  2007
Silje Nes  Recurring Dream   Ames Room  Fat Cat  CD  Another bit of slightly strange pop, feels as though it is half being dreamt and half being performed.  2008
The Czars  Angel Eyes   Sorry I Made You Cry  Bella Union  CD  Well, I am a sucker for a song like this- deep,. sappy, sweet, and seductive. Have a drink of whiskey, sit back, close your eyes and let this voice wash over you. The whole album is full of covers, each one you can imagine being performed by someone engulfed in shadows.  2006
Ocassional Keepers  Elsinore   True North  LTM  CD  Members of The Field Mice, Trembling Blue Stars, Aberdeen, etc with the sort of perfect pop confection that they have been creating (alongside haunting and dark songs) since I picked up the first Field Mice single from Chris at his pre Other Music perch, Kim's Underground.  2008
Thanks for listening! I am looking forward to the next show. Please feel more than free to send any letters via this page or at andywaltzer@hotmail.com I wish all of you the very very best!!
