Playlist for This Is the Modern World with Trouble - August 28, 2008

Thursdays 9am - Noon on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Good morning Trouble.

Thu. 8/28/08 9:16am From: trouble

good morning!

Thu. 8/28/08 9:20am From: Tom (The Bactrian Support Network)

Nice Nina Simone opener !! First number you play (and the rest of show too) , but first one I am like sitting in my chair just wondering every Tuesday morning ..! Bonjour !! .. Comment Allez-Vous??

Thu. 8/28/08 9:20am From: Bad Ronald

Howdy Folks!

Thu. 8/28/08 9:22am From: Negator

Poco? Now I know why they call you "Trouble". YEAH!

Thu. 8/28/08 9:24am From: Negator

You know, there's a Poco record in every thrift store in this great nation? Fact.

Thu. 8/28/08 9:25am From: Bad Ronald

the one with the drawing of a horse on the cover?

Thu. 8/28/08 9:27am From: gumby

Did someone say Pokie? I'm gonna catch that horse if I can.

Thu. 8/28/08 9:28am From: Parq

Poco evokes another time so powerfully that just saying the name makes me feel like it's a quarter century ago.

Thu. 8/28/08 9:29am From: gumby

Is that ptchouli & weed smoke I smell?

Thu. 8/28/08 9:31am From: gumby

This is definately the sadest song ever written.

Thu. 8/28/08 9:32am From: Bad Ronald

Sadder than "Ode to Billy Joe"?

Thu. 8/28/08 9:33am From: KapoStrano

Tell Me More and Then Some. All roads lead through Nina Simone and, speaking of Billie Holliday, are you going to play any Prez today? You know it was Lester Young's birthday yesterday.

Love ya, trouble!

Thu. 8/28/08 9:36am From: gumby

Happy belated b-day Prez!
BR - His beer bucket has hole in it, he can't buy no beer!!!!!! That's a tradgedy,

Thu. 8/28/08 9:38am From: Bad Ronald

Gotcha Gumby - I now concur!

Thu. 8/28/08 9:40am From: gumby

Mingus's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" would be an appropriate Prez salute. Not that you need help Trouble, your selections are always The Picks that Click!
BR - He did seem happy though, maybe he's on the wagon.

Thu. 8/28/08 9:42am From: 55fps

Lady Gumby, isn't 'Pork Pie' a tribute to Eric Dolphy?

Thu. 8/28/08 9:45am From: Bad Ronald

It seems he's on the running board of a Ford with his baby...

Thu. 8/28/08 9:46am From: Charles Mingus

"Goodbye Porkpie Hat" is indeed a tribute to Prez. You may be thinking of "So Long Eric."

Thu. 8/28/08 9:46am From: gumby

I ain't no lady, I'm his wife!
I dunno, I thought that was for Lester. it's a good tune anywho. I'm diggin' this crazy horn number too!

Thu. 8/28/08 9:48am From: gumby

Prez is in da joint!!!!!!

Thu. 8/28/08 9:54am From: gumby

Mingus!!! We thought you was dead.

Thu. 8/28/08 9:56am From: 55fps

Thanks Lady Chuck, my bad (I shoulda known betta).

Thu. 8/28/08 10:01am From: listener mark

Good Morning everyone, Good Morning DJ Trouble

Thu. 8/28/08 10:02am From: gumby

Top 'o the Mornin' lm.

Thu. 8/28/08 10:03am From: Adrian in London

I'm listening to this at my Mac wearing light blue earphones, which I had to buy at lunchtime after my black ones gave up the ghost. They look like something My Little Pony would wear. Maybe I should have gone all out and bought the pink ones?

Thu. 8/28/08 10:11am From: gumby

I wouldn't sweat it Adrian if there in your ears you can't see them. But fashion is not my forte. Plaids & stripes whooo-hooo!

Thu. 8/28/08 10:12am From: fishmonkeystew

Here's another vote for Goodbye Porkpie Hat! Mingus for the win!! Good morning, Trouble.

Thu. 8/28/08 10:13am From: gumby

Listen to me? Four or five coffees and I'm Dear Abbie.

Thu. 8/28/08 10:15am From: 55fps

When did Wire get back together. Who's in it?

Thu. 8/28/08 10:15am From: John Prine

Dear Abby, Dear Abby...
Well I never thought
That me and my girlfriend would ever get caught
We were sitting in the back seat just shooting the breeze
With her hair up in curlers and her pants to her knees
Signed Just Married
Just Married, Just Married...

Thu. 8/28/08 10:18am From: gumby

John you are what you are and you ain't what you ain't,

Thu. 8/28/08 10:20am From: Dear Abby

Pardon me, I think I'm gumby.

Thu. 8/28/08 10:22am From: GP

Morning all..Afternoon to Europe
Adrian...at least nobody will sta your phones!

Thu. 8/28/08 10:22am From: trouble

keep it cool people or i will shut this baby down...

Thu. 8/28/08 10:23am From: GP

STA..hmmmm, I think I meant "steal"

Thu. 8/28/08 10:25am From: Adrian in London

I know, someone nicked the 'e' and the 'l'. Loved that Silver Summit track Trouble

Thu. 8/28/08 10:25am From: GP

Trouble, what are you seeing that we aren't? Do you have something like the 5 sec delay where you can kill comments before they can burn into our eyes?

Thu. 8/28/08 10:29am From: trouble

i have the magical power of delete and I have used it this morning...so yes your lovely eyes have not seen all that has transpired. and it is not cool...

Thu. 8/28/08 10:30am From: Derek

My curiosity is killing me. I'm dying to know what's "not keeping cool"...

Thu. 8/28/08 10:30am From: 55fps

I managed to catch it and you're right Trouble, totally uncool!

Thu. 8/28/08 10:31am From: GP

Trouble..its not like you have anything else to do right ; )

Thu. 8/28/08 10:32am From: listener mark

stop it right now or I'll turn this car around. and no stopping for ice cream

Thu. 8/28/08 10:34am From: trouble

bingo! and i like ice cream, so don't get the viking lady mad

Thu. 8/28/08 10:36am From: ?

I am corn-fused! what is not cool here??

Thu. 8/28/08 10:43am From: gumby

Speaking of birds. A hummingbird came up to about a foot from my face this morning, then hung there staring straight at me, then flew off. Now that was cool!

Thu. 8/28/08 10:44am From: Steve

Hi Trouble!
Still listening - Still loving :)
What is it that you teach?

Thu. 8/28/08 10:45am From: dc pat

you're lucky he didn't bite you...

Thu. 8/28/08 10:45am From: listener mark

back to school for the smaller DJs

Thu. 8/28/08 10:50am From: gumby

dc I know there aggressive, but I'm faster. Ha-Ha

Thu. 8/28/08 10:50am From: Carmichael

Good morning, everyone. Nothin like walking in on a Poco conversation an hour later.

I have that horse drawing tattooed on my shoulder. One of my all-time faves, and I'm pleasantly surprised to have had the chance to hear it on WFMU.

Sonny Burgess, too .... Damn, I have to get up earlier.

Thu. 8/28/08 10:53am From: GP

I like this Caroline song She sounds a little like Bjork.

Thu. 8/28/08 10:54am From: dc pat

I've been seeing a lot more humming birds lately. Maybe things are getting juicier and sweeter?//

Thu. 8/28/08 10:58am From: GP

We can only hope dc pat, we can only hope....your comment placed the image of moldy peaches into my mind....which, while not only being almost too sweet, would also be great to hear right now...hint hint.

Thu. 8/28/08 10:59am From: Adrian in London

I thought Caroline sounded like Stina Nordenstam, which can only be good. Unless you're Stuart Staples, of course.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:01am From: gumby

they seem to like our Rose of Sharons, although this one was by a rose bush. I used to put up the feeder, but someone told me that the sugar water ferments to form alcohol and the hummingbirds become addicted, so I stopped. I just had a plum, it was good, not moldy.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:02am From: Harvey

Do DJs get offended by requests in the comment section?

Thu. 8/28/08 11:04am From: listener mark

Had some nice organic pears from Woodstock flea market. Didn't buy any fleas

Thu. 8/28/08 11:07am From: gumby

Two good words about Fall. Seckles Pears!!!! YUM!!!!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:09am From: trouble

harvey i don't get offended, but i can't always accomodate requests due to time or taste constraints. but request away...

Thu. 8/28/08 11:09am From: Carmichael

They probably get offended by comments in the comments section.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:09am From: gumby

Speaking of bugs. Did anyone see in Beijing where they have a market to sell crickets for fighting contests. They could get a mess around my house right now.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:13am From: Bad Ronald

"Psycho" by Jack Kittel would be cool...

Thu. 8/28/08 11:14am From: gumby

Painted up, Powdered up, Bad Country Chicks rule!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:18am From: GP

Michele..M E O W ! Yea baby....( trying to do my best Austin Powers imitation which would be embarrassing if seen any where else other than on the radio!)

Thu. 8/28/08 11:20am From: Harvey

Ah, I was just wondering. By the way, during that esser track I was thinking, "Boy, this sounds like Loser!"

Thu. 8/28/08 11:20am From: listener mark

TERMITES!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:21am From: GP

BECK!!!@@!!! I believer the term is " SWEET" Nice choice ...Trouble

Thu. 8/28/08 11:23am From: JJZ

Ah, I love Thunder Road.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:23am From: Carmichael

Dick Curless, "Chick Inspector". The most politically incorrect trucker song in history. I think you all would heartily enjoy it.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:24am From: ?

Thunder Road!

I just watched the movie last night. COINCIDENCE??

Thu. 8/28/08 11:26am From: gumby

Beer buckets with holes. Incinerated moonshine. Oh the humanity. :( sob, sob

Thu. 8/28/08 11:28am From: Mickey Mephistopheles

Yum, Whiskey!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:28am From: Pete Townsend

Thu. 8/28/08 11:45am From: cb

your mind" from paul weller's new record. and here it is again!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:45am From: Jennique

Trouble, je t'ecoute et je suis une femme.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:46am From: Laurie

Adrian: Whaaat?? Don't judge!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:46am From: Kid Salami

Bring on the buns!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:46am From: Carmichael

Adrian, we have some pretty swanky gals on this side of the pond.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:46am From: Harvey

I think now would be an appropriate time for "Chocolate Girl"

Thu. 8/28/08 11:47am From: Laurel

Any ladies gonna be left once Joe Belock comes on? hahaha

Thu. 8/28/08 11:47am From: Carmichael

Or "Hey Playgirl".

Thu. 8/28/08 11:48am From: Adrian in London

Indeed. Just slightly taken aback at the aforementioned meat products expression. No judging from over here.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:49am From: victoria

Joe B is one of my faves!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:49am From: Bad Ronald

Don't sweat it Laurie we still love you!
(Not sure if that makes you feel any better or worse)

Thu. 8/28/08 11:50am From: Laurie

Adrian: We can't all be classy like Boris.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:51am From: Carmichael

Boris Johnson?!? HA HA ....

Thu. 8/28/08 11:51am From: Bad Ronald

I guess they call it a bangerfest in London...

Thu. 8/28/08 11:52am From: Carmichael

And a chorizofest in San Juan.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:52am From: Henry Darger

Love those Vivians!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:53am From: Matt

Speaking of girls and classy, I love the Vivian Girls!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:53am From: Bad Ronald

longinisafest in Manilla!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:53am From: Adrian in London

Oh, the horror. Where to begin with Boris. People were being chucked in jail left right and centre in China and they let that idiot go free. On behalf of London, and I am truly sorry. But at least you don't have to live here with him "in charge" Laurie!

Thu. 8/28/08 11:56am From: Carmichael

Let's not get started about our own leader, Adrian.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:57am From: Laurie

No, I just had to spend eight years in a country under the "leadership" of George W. Bush. Boris > Dubya, surely?

And was Ken Livingston really so bad that Boris looked like the better option? Did people vote for Boris because of his hair? Did they really hate those congestion charges that much?

Thu. 8/28/08 11:58am From: owen

ken was also rubbish. 9 billion pounds on an olympics anyone? who needs hospitals, eh?

Thu. 8/28/08 11:58am From: Parq

Speaking of cultural linguistic glitches, they just had the Tomato Festival in Spain. Imagine if someone in the US said to you, "Let's go out and find a bunch of nice tomatos and whack hell out of them."

Thu. 8/28/08 11:58am From: Lady Rachael

yay

Thu. 8/28/08 11:59am From: Bad Ronald

Would you consider life under the current administration a BushFest?

Thu. 8/28/08 11:59am From: Harvey

Well, my hat is off to the freeform ladies. The world could use more like you.

Thu. 8/28/08 11:59am From: PG

Mayor of London isn't terribly powerful anyway.

Thu. 8/28/08 12:00pm From: Bad Ronald

Wonderful Eno tune thanks Trouble!

Thu. 8/28/08 12:02pm From: Adrian in London

People voted against Ken as a way of attacking the hopeless Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who's from the same party. And hey, Ken brought the Tour de France to London! Great show, Trouble!

Tue. 9/2/08 3:38pm From: Chris

Trouble, best set in a long long long time.

They're all amazing by the way, but this one hit home

Thu. 9/4/08 11:11am From: terry

It's not hard to understand,Trouble.
The rich girl was cheered for the same reason that all the celebrities in Hollywood are made so much of everytime one has a kid. Like its so hard to get preggers.
Hollywood glorifies mommyhood so politics is no different.
