Artist Track Album Label Comments Special

Set 1: some great rock. (Listen to this set: Real)
Jonathan Kane  Pops (track 2) (Listen: Real)   Options February  Table Of The Elements  Jonathan Kane's brand of blues rock, a definite western feel, gradually & slightly builds, easygoing.
Richard Lloyd  Field Of Fire (CD 1, track 9) (Listen: Real)   Options Field Of Fire Deluxe  Reaction  One of the great rock songs ever. This is the original version - not the remixed and shortened version on CD #2. I understand why Lloyd remixed the entire original album (it's contained on CD #2 of this 2 CD set) but, in this case, at least, the original is magical.  ***
Marble Sheep  Tears (track 1) (Listen: Real)   Options Message From Oarfish  Captain Trip  I sat down to listen to this album, expecting more of the great psych rock Marble Sheep often comes up with. I was momentarily taken aback, I admit, because I wasn't hearing psych rock at all. As luck would have it, we have here, and also on track 3 of this CD, some great straight-ahead rock. This track: a sustained exuberant blast is more like it!  ***

Mic break between Sets 1 & 2. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Real)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Options Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 2: the old radio show portion of the evening. (Listen to this set: Real)
Gunsmoke  Hero's Departure   Options Originally broadcast December 18, 1960  (no label)  There's a new guy in town, and he's a war hero - or is he?

This is one of the last episodes of one of radio's great series, honed down to its essentials of well-defined characters and a story style that makes it easy to imagine you're right there in it. The ending of this episode carries a punch.

"I just changed the truth a little bit, Marshall. It made me seem important."

Sure, it takes place in The West - or, as they call it in France, Le Far West. So, you could call it a western. But Gunsmoke was and is to this day far more than this. And that's why it's one of radio's great series. Unless you're among those who say it IS the greatest.

And check the 2 commercials at the end: the first is for a laxative cereal (still on the market), and the second is for a sleeping pill called Mr. Sleep. Simpler times.....

Mic break between Sets 2 & 3. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Real)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Options Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 3: the psych rock portion of the evening. (Listen to this set: Real)
Oneida  Preteen Weaponry Part 2 (track 2) (Listen: Real)   Options Preteen Weaponry  Jagjaguwar  Slow, acidy & druggy, heavy, builds gradually & moderately, quieter last few minutes, sudden end.
The Warlocks  Stone Hearts (track 3) (Listen: Real)   Options Phoenix EP  Birdman  A sunnier feel, psych rock, harmonica, sustained.
Up-Tight  1994. Jan at Ritz (track 1: faded out by -3:00) (Listen: Real)   Options Sweet Sister 1994 - 2003  Up-Tight  Monster Japanese psych rock. The music on the CD is arranged from earliest (this piece) to most recent at the end.
The Warlocks  Jam Of The Warlocks (track 6) (Listen: Real)   Options Warlocks  Bomp!  Their 1st album. Anticipatory start, like the band's getting ready for what's to come - a piece of at-times ecstatic psych rock.  ***

Mic break between Sets 3 & 4. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Real)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Options Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 4: quieter & darker - to start. But it warms up. (Listen to this set: Real)
Maurizio Bianchi  Aurea Aetas (track 1) (Listen: Real)   Options Das Platinzeitalter  Incunabulum  Airy, deep & dark, soft & quiet, deep & soft surges, gets somewhat active for a while, good for a feel of an experimental outer space, good at above quiet volume to bring out the slight storminess. Das Platinzeitalter translates as The Platinum Age.
Giancarlo Becuzzi & Fabio Orsi  I'm Happy Here (Before The Rain) (track 2: faded out by -2:22) (Listen: Real)   Options Muddy Speaking Ghosts Through My Machines  A Silent Place  Quiet and gentle guitar --> warm but mysterious music with echoey voices in the mix.
Aidan Baker  The Sea Swells A Bit... (track 1) (Listen: Real)   Options The Sea Swells A Bit...  A Silent Place  Feeling of water, deep-ish, slow & calming, you do feel like you're being slowly lifted and set down by the sea, develops a gentle edge underneath, slowly quiets down last few minutes.  ***

Mic break between Sets 4 & 5. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Real)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Options Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 5: 2 very different ways to relax. (Listen to this set: Real)
Musicians of Sekolas Tinggi Seni Indonesia  Gending Tunggul Kawung (track 2) (Listen: Real)   Options Gamelan Of Central Java I: Classical Gendings  Felmay  Instrumental, quiet, meditative.
James Blackshaw  Past Has Not Passed (track 2) (Listen: Real)   Options Litany Of Echoes  Tompkins Square  Quiet start, then a luminous folk-oriented guitar over a darker base. Sweet music.  ***

End of show mic break. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Real)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Options Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Most - if not all - their stuff is out on the Captain Trip label. Their url: www.captaintrip.co.jp. I'd recommend: Whirl Live, and Marble Sheep Meets Circle Triangle Square.
