Favoriting July 12, 2008: Just Back from Austin
We got in at 5 am Friday morning, from San Antone, after more than a week in Texas. Mostly Austin, visiting old friends, eating mexican food and hearing mucho music. Then a few days in the hill country west of town-- Enchanted Rock, Lost Maples, Rio Frio, with a final stay in Utopia, Texas on the Sabinal River. I brought a lot of this music back with me.

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Comments
Big Guitars from Texas  Boomerang   Favoriting This Texas twang reminds me (and you?) that I'm back on the radio
Grupo Fantasma  El Sabio Soy Yo   Favoriting Latinfunk out of Austin, these guys hit it big over the past few years; check out their newest CD, Sonidos Gold (High Wire Music, 2008)
Rick Trevino  Ojitos Traidores   Favoriting Country crooner returns to his Chicano roots; from Los Super Seven's tribute to border radio: "Heard It Through the X" (Telarc, 2006)
Marcos Loya  Yo Te Quiero   Favoriting Movie music by Robert Rodriquez, from the soundtrack to "Once Upon a Time in Mexico"
Del Castillo  Perdoname   Favoriting These hot guitar brothers are one of Austin's favorite bands these days; from "Brotherhood" (Smilin' Castle Records, 2006)
Del Castillo  El Corrido de Don Lulai   Favoriting We saw them last week at Nutty Browns, an outdoor space in Dripping Springs-- 1/2 hour west of Austin. Great live show, with a Texas sunset, enchiladas y cerveza
Juno Reactor  Pistolero   Favoriting More music from filmmaker Rodriquez, who also plays guitar on these tunes
Los Lonely Boys  Love Don't Care About Me   Favoriting On record, they are a little too pop. But live, these three brothers from San Angelo-- Jo Jo, Henry & Ringo Garza-- sure can rock.
Del Castillo w/ Willie Nelson  I Never Cared For You   Favoriting Beautiful tune; we heard them play an instrumental version of this, no Willie.
Grupo Fantasma  Perso Fra / Mesquites   Favoriting I just love this stuff; hope you do too!
Chingon  Cuka Rocka   Favoriting This is Robert Rodriquez's own band, also from the "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" soundtrack
Cuarteto Don Ramon  Pachuco Boogie   Favoriting On the liner notes, it says this is actually Don Tosti's Pachuco Boogie Boys-- recorded in Los Angeles in 1948.
Monstas  Chicken Wings   Favoriting Austin drummer Ernie Durawa-- originally from San Antonio-- is one of the main forces in this fine band; check out their debut album: "Meet the Monstas"
Texas Tornados  El Pantalon Blue Jean   Favoriting Doug Sahm & Freddy Fender are now gone but Flaco Jiminez (playing accordian here) and Augie Meyers play on! Drums by Ernesto Saldana Durawa.
Texas Tornados  Adios Mexico   Favoriting The Tornados recorded two versions of their first album, one in Spanish & one in English. (WB, 1990)
Freddy Steady  Narum's Harem   Favoriting Freddy Steady is Freddy Krc, longtime Austin all around everything. This is from a 4-song soundtrack to a (probably non-existent) movie called "Masquade a Go Go"
Los Jazz Vatos  Tres Palabras   Favoriting One more from Ernie Durawa, this time a cut from his jazz combo.
Cachaito  Tumbao No.5   Favoriting Cuban bassist Orlando Lopez-- nephew of the late great bass player Cachao (Israel Lopez), who some say invented mambo-- has a superb new album: "Cachaito" (World Circuit, 2008)
Sabor Kolombia  El Mix tracks 6&7 excerpt   Favoriting Not sure about title but great music; from DJ Rupture's 2008 WFMU Marathon CD
Chicha Libre  Sonido Amazonico   Favoriting Title cut to the fine fine album from this Brooklyn psychedelic cumbia band; the CD was put out by Barbes Records this year. And they play there a lot.
Mano Negra  Drive Me Crazy   Favoriting This is the first time I heard of Manu Chao, back when he played with this crazy multiculti combo
King Tubby  Who's Dub   Favoriting King Tubby takes the Heptones tune--"Who's Fooling"-- and mixes it up a bit; from a new CD called "King Tubby On the Mix, Volume 2"
Manu Chao  Prince Fatty Remix Instrumental Version   Favoriting This guy is everywhere! From "Politik Kills" on Nacional
Many Chao  Chris Blackwell & Paul "Groucho" Smykle Remix   Favoriting It's always hard to read ManuChao's covers but that's okay; it's what's inside that counts!
King Tubby  The Human Race   Favoriting King Tubby does the Symbols
Orchestra Baobab  Pape Ndiaye   Favoriting I missed them when they were in NYC recently but this is from a new CD on World Circuit called "Made in Dakar"
Harry E. Quashie  Anadwofa   Favoriting A popular number here at WFMU, this tune is from "Living is Hard: West African Music in Britain, 1927-1929" (Honest Jons Records, 2008)
Newham Generals  Tetsuya's Theme   Favoriting From "Lagos Shake" A Tony Allen Chop Up" (Honest Jons Records, 2008)
Leni Stern  Ousmane   Favoriting So many American musicians have been going to Africa to record & collaborate; jazz guitarist Leni Stern went to Mali to work with some great players and the result is well worth it.
Rex Lawson and this Rivers Men  Oko   Favoriting Vampisoul recently put out a collection of Nigerian and Ghanian highlife from the 60s & 70s
Mono Mono  Kenimania   Favoriting They weren't kidding: "Nigeria Rock Special: Psychedelic Afro-Rock & Fuzz Funk in 1970s Nigeria" (Soundway, 2008)
The Hygrades  In the Jungle   Favoriting Wow. More.
Tinariwan  Arawan   Favoriting Rock & roll from the deserts of Mali, from "A Rough Guide to the Music of Mali"-- a collection of the best of the best
Steve Turre  African Shuffle   Favoriting In 1995, Steve Turre put out a fabulous CD called the "Rhythm Within"-- with a great band and his own "sanctified" shells. This number has help from Andy Gonzalez, Stanton Davis, Dimati Dinizulu, Milton Cardona & others.
Chucho Valdes  Caravan   Favoriting The CD is "Briyumba Palo Congo: Religion of the Congo" on Blue Note Records, recorded in Havana in 1998. This is, of course, one of the most recorded songs in the world-- and this version is one of the best!
The Coffin Daggers  Caravan   Favoriting A different take on this classic, recorded in Brooklyn between 2002-2004; bandmember Peter lives across the street from me here in Jersey City!
Henry O  Crackin' Up   Favoriting Henry Ojutkangas, from Finland, has the blues; Texas drummer Ernie Durawa is going to Europe soon to tour with Henry. Check him on the web at musicmobile.fi

Hi all: Nice to hear from you; I'm in a groove, with less than a half hour to go. Will try to fit stuff in but, if not, next time. Check out old shows on the archive; write more to stevek@wfmu.org. (Andy: I heard you on the air a while back, when you were in town. Hope all is well.)

Things are good...sipping a beer with a friend, listening to your show while the sun sets- how bad could that be? Living in the country, nice...but hearing the run down of upcoming live shows makes me yearn a bit for NYC (saw Rachid Taha and Dengue Fever last week- great show). We have a great bluegrass festival once per year, though- it's fantastic. Other than that, married and all, fixing to move to Minneapolis...if ever you are around these parts, let me know!
