Some context: The WBAI Free Music Store operated out of the former Swedish Evangelical Church at 359 East 62nd Street, which the station owned and housed its broadcast facilities, from the late 60s until 1977 when the station imploded and sold the building to cover legal expenses.

Citizen Kafka revived the Free Music Store in the early 80s, playing at PS 41 on W11th street. I went to most of them. I asked Kafka if there were any tapes and he said the news department record over them.

I had a show on WBAI in the early 80s and I saw that they re-used tapes. Charles Ruas saved most of the ones he produced. That's how I got this.

This is terrific! I saw The Patti Smith Group less that a year later at The Roxy in Hollywood. I was a young man, and Patti really made my blood boil. Her stage manor was very provocative. But yeah, the way she extemporized with with her wild hair sticking up in a ripped tee shirt and army combat pants drove me nuts. I saw her quite a few times, but the first time I was a goner.

The music at this show is a little more subdued. When I saw them, Richard Sohl was playing an electric piano, so the dynamics were different. Also, John Cale played the bass. He fell down and knocked over an amp when they did My Generation.
