Btw: was reflecting on yer moody blues reverie abt ex gf & her best friend disliking - I always chalk that vibe up to the best friend that wanted more from the relationship & is now envious of the new bf.

yeah, said best friend was envious that i took my gf's attention away from her. when we did shrooms once together when she was visiiting FL, things got so i had bad trip b/c of her. but during that funeral trip, we actually bonded. also awkward, my gf's brother came out of the closet (and her family was conservative catholic) also awkward. but he did take me to a wonderful drag show and later a gay bar, since i was barely on speaking terms w/ my gf. i later once in brooklyn, ran into him at a bar.

- back in the day, may have happily picked up that Liquid2 1st ep at 99Records directly. Definitely scored the ESG there. It was truly a game changer, while it briefly lasted. Like a tiny sneak preview of what Other Music stores provided Years later. - still have all my insane import vinyls from those heady daze!

99Records was so minuscule and cramped (below street level) that if more than 5 or 6 people were inside shopping - you were literally rubbing shoulders & backs & awkwardly negotiating around each other.
Yet the density of it utterly unusual international contents was awe-inspiring!

One of the unsung heroes of the music biz worked there—Terry Tolkin—put together the Guitarrorists album (indie guitar heroes doing instrumental music) and the Neil Young tribute album The Bridge (featuring Pixies' version of "Winterlong," which Kim Deal says is the best thing the band ever did—agree), signed Stereolab, Galaxie 500, Afghan Whigs, managed Butthole Surfers, many many other achievements. Sadly died a few years back.

I don’t believe that was the same guy (always) behind the counter (perhaps it was?) - tall & skinny and rather dark. Anyways, he knew about the most obscure music imaginable. NDW German obscurities, self-released DIY, meaning literally handmade and labeled cassettes and silk screened vinyl in tiny editions. Speaking on the phone with Vivian Goldman, Don Letts, and friends from UK 🇬🇧 arriving off the plane carrying bags of LPs to share & then sell in the store. Crazy small world.
also where i scored the hugely thick reference book on all things indy, DIY, & New Wave called “VOLUME” version 2.0 (mind you, 1982 83 84 well before interwebs) - was impossible to find info of obscure stuff.

Oh man, just looked up some Images of Terry Tolkin - indeed looks like it was he who was most often behind the counter/sharing his incredible knowledge. 1st Einsturz Naubauten (sp) album (with the industrial Pink Floyd back cover joke) on incredible ZickZack label, wirtshaftswunder, der plan, pyrolator!, die Krupps “stahlwerksynphonie”! Homosexuals cassettes, Amos&Sara, The Work, Recommended Records, etc,etc.
