Writer Tim Riley called 'For Sale' the yin between two yang (upbeat) Movies. The dark side of peak Beatlemania. Which is ...great, right ?! I think of McGuinn saying TheBeatles were FolkRawk from the get-go, matter of fact (tho 'RubberSoul' gets all the cred for that)... & TheBeatles never stood still - tho 'For Sale' has a lot of Classic R'n'R Covers on it. So the 'Early' period is not entirely homogenous... Fellow who does 'Cocaine & Rhinestones' likes to lambast TheBeatles' attempts @ Kuntry...

The Suspect (1940, dir. Edward Siodmak)
Charles Laughton wants to marry Ella Raines but has a *horrible* wife to deal with first.
The Letter (1944, dir. William Wyler)
Bette Davis, wife of a rubber plantation manager, shoots an importunate suitor in the first minute of the movie. But is there more to the story?

Well it's funny, I really wanted to hear what he would say about Wilco because I've always found them to be a really really good band but not a great one or one I find very interesting, and I thought he was pretty insightful about their shortcomings. Then I listened to the one about REM and it seemed to be on a lower plane, critique-wise. His partner is not on his level and that doesn't help.

When I graduated high school in upstate NY, the drinking age was 18. The day we graduated, we were across the street at the Old Coach, in our caps and gowns and the old guys were buying us drinks - as to welcome us into adulthood. I thought it was cool. And I think when you graduate high school, are now able to be charged with a felony, be drafted, be able to vote - well, all these things are entry into adulthood. I think you just have to teach your kids about the dangers and show them good habits, and let them know they can trust you if they come to with any questions or issues. (and there's a lot more than just booze to teach them.)
I think young people at 18 are fully capable of being adults if you let them.

John L:

My college had a bar on campus and, since I was in a 21 and older dorm, we were allowed keg parties. I also developed a taste for Wild Turkey, which resulted in a few blackouts. One especially stupid night I also did mushrooms and coke; the next day several people commented that I looked like death. I'm just lucky I didn't hurt anyone else.

Weed stores have proliferated far beyond what I would think demand could possibly be. I don't get it. It's worse than frame stores! There's one on my block, THE Puff N' Stuff, and I don't think I've ever seen a customer in it. The GRAND OPENING balloons are starting to look a little sad.

Yo, SQUINTS! I usually listen to Brainen's show on the GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO stream in real time on Saturdays and this show on the Archives later, but decided to join Mr. Shelley's program today. Good stuff to listen to and interesting comments as well. Hope you are luxuriating in your weekend respite from work. And a fond farewell to the FROGMAN!

Yep. 5'8-9" and 135 soaking wet. Possibly only a weak bladder saved my life then. Smoked dope if it was offered but wasn't going to let that stuff cut into my vinyl habit. Took actual heed of the 6th grade drug education (1971). "That'll kill ya. Check. That'll kill. Check."

Stopped even smoking dope and pretty gave up hard liquor mid sophomore year in college. Recognized my finitude. Pretty much a beer guy since then.

I've smoked dope on ceremonial occasions or to be polite with friends maybe a half dozen times since. I'll nurse a whisky before singing but that's about all. I do like a gin martini to start if the weather's nice. But just one.
