Heather The Jerk  Sureal/Good/Fun/Exciting   Favoriting Sureal/Good/Fun/Exciting Tape  Goodbye Boozy  2024  This l'il gem was released just a few months ago. Heather says "I am a big nerd" After what could have been a great Adult Swim album, “Cable Access TV” from 2021, Heather The Jerk (The Hussy & Proud Parents) is back with 4 new garage rock/punk super fun tracks. Heather the jerk is the solo project of Heather Sawyer based out of Madison, WI. After playing a few shows HTJ released a 4 song ep titled “The Rick Shitty Sessions” recorded by Rick Freuhling of local bands Fire Heads & Dumb Vision. In between now and then Heather played in a couple touring bands and was pretty busy with that. Now she is back with “Surreal Good Fun Exciting Tape”. The tape is comprised of her and her BF Josh and out now (if physical is still sold out – the digital is not) from Italy’s Goodbye Boozy Records.    0:00:00 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Mother Of Mars  Harmonium Detector   Favoriting Harmonium Detector EP  Ransom Note Records  2023  OOOH! AHHH! Released about a year ago, this delightful track comes from Mother of Mars...the latest musical incarnation of New Yorkers Vito Roccoforte & Gabriel Andruzzi. Vito and Gabe are best known as members of era-defining NY post punkers The Rapture and continue their tradition of angular yet danceable, hooky yet challenging musical output. Title track, Harmonium Detector, is based on the concept of breaking up with your cellphone - something Vito has attempted in the past, with limited success! It showcases guest vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki's lush vocals, transporting the listener to a world of rapturous electronic elation. Its intricate layers of rhythm create a unique and mesmerising listening experience    0:05:18 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Beige Banquet  People   Favoriting Ornamental Hermit  Swish Swash Records  2024  TFEB favourites Beige Banquet are back with a new album "Ormanental Hermit". From Tom Brierley’s DIY bedroom studio to the pulsing heart of London’s punk scene, Beige Banquet has morphed from a solo project into a powerful five-piece force, carving their own niche with a distinctive blend of post-punk fury and Devo-esque quirkiness. Gone are the lo-fi whispers of their past, replaced by a cathedral of sound. Guitars writhe and hiss, sculpted by studio precision, while drums pound like the obsidian heart of a leviathan. But amidst the polished fury, the barbed wire melody of their signature bite remains. Brierley’s vocals, laced with poetic venom and urban grit, weave tapestries of introspective ache and caustic wit. “Ornamental Hermit” isn’t a rejection of their roots; it’s a defiant expansion, a sonic DNA test revealing both raw beginnings and studio savvy. This isn’t just a new album; it’s a manifesto on vinyl, a battle cry etched in grooves, a declaration that Beige Banquet are ready to carve their names into the granite face of post-punk.  *   0:08:19 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Frustration  Catching Your Eye   Favoriting Our Decisions  Born Bad Records  2024  Hailing from Paris, France, Frustrations' powerful, potent songs yield a brutal post-punk sound. Just imagine WARSAW meet WIRE meet the FALL and you will already have a good idea of their musical universe. Bad news is : Frustration is an increasingly misnamed band. You know where it’s going from the first few bars : the Parisian gang isn’t about old dogs learning new tricks, and manages to give precisely what we were hoping for. Hence : sa-tis-fac-tion, sorry. The relative classicism of their sixth album, ‘Our Decisions’, will quench the thirst of their fans, whose reputation is well established (we’re not talking about their very real record for bar takings). Their music is driven by a primitive desire that proves sufficiently complex for its expression never to get redundant. Frustration doesn’t teach music history, but definitely know where they came from : Born Bad pillars proudly bear the banner of our bastard french post-punk, bred in the wild, crests slicked back and spurs ready to claw.  *   0:10:42 (MP3 | Pop-up)
LOBSTERBOMB  Nur In Deinen Träumen   Favoriting Nur In Deinen Träumen Single  Duchess Box Records  2023  Formed in Berlin in 2020, LOBSTERBOMB approaches themes of personal introspection, desire for systemic change and individual growth through a lens of frenetic, loud and catchy indie-garage rock.    0:14:17 (MP3 | Pop-up)
WALL  Last Date   Favoriting WALL EP  Wharf Cat Records  2016  WITH EACH SONIC MOVEMENT ON THE INTRODUCTORY SELF-TITLED EP FROM NEW YORK’S WALL THERE'S A COMMITMENT TO DEFEND A PUNCTUATED DUALITY BETWEEN CURIOSITY AND TRIUMPH. AFTER ALL, WHAT’S A BAND WORTH BUT ITS MESSAGE? A CERTAIN SELF-AWARENESS OF THE VERY QUESTION IS AT THE HEART OF THE WALL APPARATUS AND LISTENING ALONG AS THEY DISCOVER THEMSELVES THROUGHOUT THIS EP IS INVIGORATING AND SCARY. TONE AND RHYTHM WHIRL TOGETHER, LIKE AN EMERGENCY EXIT DOOR CHOREOGRAPHED TO SWING FLAWLESSLY IN TIME TO ITS DAMNED AND CHAOTIC PAVLOVIAN ALARM BELL. FROM THE FIRST RIGID AND CAUTIOUS SECONDS OF THEIR EP, WALL UNLEASHES AN UNCANNY SELF-AWARENESS THAT METHODICALLY SLIPS PAGES RIPPED FROM DEMENTED NO WAVE LEGACIES THROUGH A SHREDDER OF THEIR OWN DESIGN....A TOXIC-NEW TEMPESTUOUS BLOODWAVE OF POST-PUNK, EXACTLY THE TRANSFUSION THE SCENE NEEDS TO STAY ALIVE.    0:17:36 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Wet Dip  Stray   Favoriting Smell of Money  Feel It Records  2023  From deep in the heart of Texas - the trio known as Wet Dip are that jarring, lightning strike of sound like nothing before them. Sisters Sylvia and Erica Rodriguez grew up in the arid, isolated Panhandle region of Texas before making their way to Austin and forming Wet Dip with Daniel Doyle. This album was recorded with Sweeping Promises’ Caufield Schnug, this music has more in common with original 80s no-wave than its modern-day post-punk scions: Wet Dip put forward dissonant, caustic songs only occasionally, even accidentally, ending up with some danceable, bass-driven funky moments. Guitarist Daniel Doyle struggles to tame his unbroken guitar, just barely winning the fight, while drummer Erica Rodriguez displays the right kind of amateurism, slightly behind the beat, holding the band together with scotch tape – but punching above her paygrade. Bassist and vocalist Sylvia Rodriguez embodies the band’s unpredictability, as she code switches between English and Spanish, haunting whispers and vein-popping screams. These tracks linger with you as much for the music as for the heavy lyrics. Some songs explore themes of our modern capitalist hellscape, others center on specifically female pain, angst, and anger at exploitation and sexual abuse. The music is challenging and rewarding and extremely singular in the current landscape...    0:19:12 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Escapism Single

2024

Mined from the depths of another seemingly endless Montreal winter comes our latest release, Escapism, by label owner Sean Kosa. Out Of Body' Utilizes polyrhythmic percussion floating atop of 2600 synth bass. Hi-hats seemingly crafted from sub-zero ice floes splintering their millennia old chemical histories into swollen arctic seascapes. A bubbling synth lead line appears from the horizon and flies skyward into low altitude orbit before disappearing into cosmic infinity.

'Out Of Mind' Kick drums-as-heartbeats nervously jitter beneath industrial dub echoes, as hi hats creep in, templar lattices appear temporarily giving a fleeting illusion of order as headlights flash through rain on the windshield. Low sub bass drones align with strobe light percussion and propel the grinding echoes of a burnt out cobalt star. Gasoline rain falls on patchwork gardens made of oxidized steel cuttings from a lathe in the music factory. Love this? Go find it on Bandcamp!!!

Data Animal  Bad M.F.   Favoriting Future Primitive  Dedstrange  2022  Future Primitive is the debut album from Auckland / Berlin Techno Punks, Data Animal, on Oliver Ackermann’s newly formed label, Dedstrange. Future Primitive follows highly regarded early singles, Bad M.F & Death Racer, and is a full-blown sonic weapon from the streets. Songs address the decay and breakdown of modern life and the approaching apocalyptic fall out of human behavior. Taking influence from NYC no-wave, British post-punk, and Detroit techno, Future Primitive gives rock n roll a much-needed facelift. The future is simultaneously technological and primordial and Future Primitive is the soundtrack to a species with no future. If the future is fuzzed out nods to Suicide...I'm down.    0:31:29 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Furrowed Brow  Outdoors Man   Favoriting Outdoors Man Single  Notes From Underground  2023  This band is making a return because a) they make me chuckle b) they are hella Fall adjacent, in spirit if nothing else. The track is an off-the-wall prog-post-punk paean to the great stones and valleys of England, and their first self-produced and self released effort. An avant-garde ode to nature and their homeland, the track was designed to be shouted loud and proud. Radiating a sense of nostalgia that’s almost impossible to place, it’s as if the band have taken core-memory melodies from your childhood and reinvented them into a gothic anthem to guide you into later life. The beauty of this track is that you won’t fully understand it, yet it will bring you a fascinating sense of comfort and will grant your mind the opportunity to let loose for four whole minutes.    0:34:18 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Neutrals  Gary Borthwick Says   Favoriting Bus Stop Nights EP  Static Shock Records  2022  I love this because it reminds me of the past. Who is Gary Borthwick?: Well, there are 11 LinkedIn profiles with that name. A Gary Borthwick passed away near Limerick last year (our sincere condolences to friends and family) Otherwise, Gary Borthwick and his tall tales remain an enigma. Neutrals are not to be confused with Neutral...a Russian neofolk band. Neutrals return with a stunning new 4 track EP on Static Shock, after an album on Emotional Response in 2019 and two 7”s on Slumberland and Domestic Departure in 2020. Each song on this EP is a golden nugget of DIY indie pop with clean and jagged guitar work, tunes at every corner and a joyous naivety. Go straight to "Gary Borthwick Says" - a song about a full time bullshitter with lyrics akin to to I, Ludicrous’ "Preposterous Tales" with music which has the charm of prime The Television Personalties and The Times. New Town Dream is another gem and if it had come out in 1979 as an obscure DIY/post punk 7", the kids would be paying £200 for it. Honestly, it’s love at first listem and pure infatuation after repeated plays. This EP will not leave your turntable.    0:38:20 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Luxury Apartments  Wire   Favoriting Wire Single  Eeasy Records  2023  A series of feral, intense live shows around London have created startling word of mouth hype, with the three-piece displaying untamed, unrivalled energy. Barbed wire riffs set against furious, D-Beat level drumming, the band match hardcore's uncompromising stance to a sense of sonic austerity. It's a thrilling, pulse-quickening racket, with the three-piece laying absolute waste...    0:41:04 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Dion Lunadon  Reduction Agent   Favoriting Dion Lunadon  Agitated Records  2017  Dion Lunadon might best be known as the powerful, enigmatic bass player of noise-rock trio A Place to Bury Strangers, but this title alone fails to accurately define a musician as dynamic and expressive as Lunadon, as his first solo effort clearly shows us. Originally hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Lunadon was formerly a member of Kiwi garage rockers The D4. Lunadon eventually relocated to New York City, joining Brooklyn’s finest noise-rocking shoegaze outfit A Place to Bury Strangers in 2010, eventually heading into the studio with the band to record APTBS’ 2012 album, Worship. Lunadon’s stage presence and bass prowess is revered, and it’s interesting to see these qualities transfer over to his debut solo effort. Organs are complemented by quick snare-blasts and blown-speaker bass fuzz...this is honest, frantic rock n' roll....never underwhelming, predictable or boring, instead coming across as a great example of how rock and roll should be executed, coupled with a good example of proto-punk minimalism. Lunadon’s music is relentless and charged and will never sound dated or uninspired.    0:43:49 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Lovely Eggs  Memory Man   Favoriting Memory Man Single  The Lovely Eggs  2024  The Lovely Eggs are back in fine form!! Charged with a hypnotic, robotic Can-like beat and propelled by a fuzzy, mangled guitar tone, Holly's vocals hang ethereally over the song's swirling, mezmerising psychedelia. “I wrote the lyrics and melody to ‘Memory Man' while driving,” remembers Holly. “It was a bit of a subconscious thought stream connected to what I'd been going through personally at the time. The original melody was slightly different to what it eventually became. It was much slower and had more of a Syd Barrett vibe. Then one day when we were in the studio, David was playing a riff and beat he had recorded but didn't know what to do with. So, we wondered what would happen if we mixed my melody and lyrics with this kind of really relentless Kraut beat that David had created and that's how the song came about. Once we knew it would work, we just knew we needed a big robot voice on there, so we put that on and sent it over to Dave Fridmann and he just really liked it and that was that. ‘Memory Man' was born."  *   0:46:09 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Fleur  Tu Es Un Être Parfait   Favoriting Tu Es Un Être Parfait 7"  Soundflat Records  2024  Dutch yé-yé revivalist Fleur returns with two amazing fuzz-driven garage beat tunes in which her appealing vocals are more irresistible than ever. Both A-side You Are a Perfect Being and Let Me Do It! on the flipside are infectious floor fillers that are new highlights in her oeuvre. Thanks to the dream team – Mark ten Hoor (guitar), Peter Kroes (bass) and Arjan Spies (drums, guitar), you know them from The Kryng – who bring their best game as rhythm section and mood makers. Tu Es Un être parfait translates as 'you are a perfect being', and that is actually a quite appropriate description for this 45.  *   0:50:23 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice  Keeps Ya Head Up   Favoriting Keeps Ya Head Up Single  Dougal Shaw  2024  Another new track from a TFEB fave! "JWe've been touring a lot and got a bunch more coming up with the new album out soon. Been learning new songs for upcoming shows, spending a bunch of time in a room together figuring out new sounds, new toys, new instruments to bring this album to life. I've been reading a lot about the genocide that's happening in Palestine, showing up to rallies when I'm home, and generally trying to operate in solidarity with the movement for the liberation of the Palestinian people...The track "Keeps Ya Head Up" stands out for me, it feels really different to anything we've released before and it's been heaps of fun playing it live."  *   1:02:01 (MP3 | Pop-up)
puni.  Roter Panda   Favoriting Roter Panda EP  Wasted Talent Records  2024  I love this track to death. It is everything I love about german chicks talking hard over a slick minimal track. Roter Panda means "red panda" I'm not sure what the significance is, but she also mentions a girl with red hair, bleached by the sun...it's intense, it's German, it's everything...I wish I could find more about her on the internet. :-(  *   1:05:03 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Mag  Riot On Your Own   Favoriting Magnitude  Magdelena Agren  2016  MAG, is a solo project of Magdalena Ågren. She works in the field in between music and performance art and using trombone, megaphone, voice, homemade electronics, loops, and drum machine all at once to build her music from scratch. From the smallest simple element, it grows into a gigantic dystopian lo-fi orchestra. Sometimes restrained and suggestive, sometimes chaotic and wild. Mag’s music is an act of resistance to the perfect and controlling in society. It is music that is written out of frustration and sadness. It strives for deep introspection and expressive power, seeking both confrontation and commonality but doesn’t care at all about codes of conduct. You will experience a powerful pop attack direct from the heart. Magdalena Ågren is based in Gothenburg, Sweden and part of the Gothenburg underground scene. She is also playing in three other bands, like the band BADA (with Anna von Houswolf), SORK and Trapped in a Loop. ”one of the best live acts I’ve ever seen. You could call it cabaret wave. Just one solo performer with a trombone, samplers and a great voice. Think like Dresden Dolls meets Bikini Kill, produced by Thurston Moore."    1:07:25 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Karl Kave, Oblik  Du Fährst Nicht In Den Urlaub   Favoriting Du Fährst Nicht In Den Urlaub Single  Karl Kave  2024  Swiss electronic producer and serial perfectionist is back with a new track and collab with Oblik. For you non German speakers, it is of course a sad song about a boy taking his girlfriend to the train station as she leaves him behind for someone else... It's tragic, poignant and hits all the right notes. I can see the rainy gray Swiss sky and mountains obscured on an unnaturally tidy and clean train station, and smell the grass of the nearby valleys and cow pastures...ahh Sad Switzerland...  *   1:12:39 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Taugadeildin  Her Longing   Favoriting Taugadeildin EP  Alda Records  1981  Taugadeildin was founded in Rekyevik 1980 by Óskar Þórisson and Árni Daníel Júlíusson. Both had started out in the first punk bands of Iceland, Fræbbblarnir and Snillingarnir. Óskar became the singer and Árni Daníel the bass player. Together they wrote a few songs, bought a drum machine and recruited Arnór Snorrason on guitar. The band was was heavily influenced by British post-punk bands such as Joy Division , Gang of Four and Pop Group. They disbanded after this one recording, with Árni Daníel then joined Q4U , while Óskar founded Mogo Homo together with Óðn Guðbrandsson, only briefly reuniting in 2004 for a one-off show.    1:16:05 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Air In The Lungs  19   Favoriting Air In The Lungs  Last Night From Glasgow  2023  Once in a while, you just want a song that reminds you of your youth. This is 19 in a bottle. Joyous, uplifting, let's go to the disco! Air In The Lungs is the new project from Edinburgh-based musician Deborah Arnott, also of the band Blueflint. The album is an atmospheric exploration into bereavement and nostalgia, covering subjects such as worker’s rights, adversity and hope. Upbeat, downbeat, with swelling synths, jagged guitars and atmospheric percussion, it is unafraid to be stark and bare, yet vivid and uplifting...this is a GREAT ALBUM.    1:19:52 (MP3 | Pop-up)

This is a collection of songs shaped by five individuals who embrace music-making as a way to center themselves in times of uncertainty; it’s resilience and imagination given shape. The Leather Lemon is a true sweet-and-sour listening experience, an album as bright and clear as it is fractured and fun.    1:30:17 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Tracked principally live and in close quarters, Let’s Wah Together captures the immediacy and spontaneity of a group of musicians listening to—and playing off— one another with genuine affection, curiosity, and joy. From the skronk n’ stomp of “I’m A Swimmer” to the Japanese Yé Yé beat inflected “Sayonara,” the dense ear-busting wistfulness of “Teen Vito” and the storming acidic drive of “Out! Out! Out!,” Let’s Wah Together is a loud and commanding recommitment to the cooperative spirit and familial love that always marks New York’s most vital eras...    1:35:53 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Talking Flowers  Storytelling   Favoriting Storytelling Single  Rama Lama Records  2023  Playful and multilayered psychedelic synthesizers meets Astrid’s dreamy and mesmerising voice and creates an equally haunting and captivating soundscape that gives the listener a feeling of entering a Twin Peaks-esque world that is both frightening and alluring at the same time. The world of Malmö, Sweden's Talking Flowers is a world one often wishes that the real one would be a bit more like, a world of mystery and excitement and a lot less grey and beige colours. Astrid “draws inspiration from the 60s, both when it comes to songwriting and recording techniques”, something that is obvious both on the debut release and the new Storytelling double single. She describes the new release this way: “When we recorded Storytelling and Bedroom Wall I was listening a lot to Margo Guryan, and we were aiming for that kind of sound in the production. Although as usual I couldn’t keep away from the synths, so it might have ended up in a more futuristic version of the 1960’s.”    1:54:41 (MP3 | Pop-up)
