i think some of motivation behind this 80's move in the experimental music world towards more 'populist' projects was the emergence of the 'go-go' 80's art market whether to capitalize on it or make some comment on it

My sorting of files has brought up one intersection of the NYC experimental folks and the pop world. A 1985 recording, released as a single in '86 personnel:

Bernard Fowler: back vocals
Bill Laswell: bass
Tony Williams: drums
L Shankar: electric violin
Steve Vai: guitar
Nicky Skopelitis: guitar

Words and singing John Lydon. That fun ditty, Rise.

Just heart that Ned has one of his cowboy songs being newly released by Willie Nelson (who did a version of it in 2006) and young country performer Orville Peck.
www.billboard.com...
"Today (April 1), Peck announced his first release on the label: a collaboration with Willie Nelson. The pair will duet on a cover of “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other,” a song originally released in 1981 by Latin country artist Ned Sublette and covered by Nelson in 2006. Peck himself previously performed a rendition for SiriusXM and at his 2023 Hollywood Bowl show."
