Favoriting The Wiggle Room: Playlist from March 5, 2024 Favoriting

A different show every week! Rotating DJs include Jon Nelson's "Sheena 'ssembly Required" (Tape Manipulations, Digital Deconstructions and Turntable Creations),
MarkTime (vintage radio airchecks), and Krys O (aka Sister Krys - WFMU alumna 1985-1991, longtime Church of the Subgenius monk. Playing cinematic ephemera, schizoid weirdos, all styles served here). Plus: surprise guests galore. (illustration courtesy of https://www.jimflora.com/)

Favoriting March 5, 2024: Lost Media Archive presents The Terrifying Tale of War of the Worlds from Album Globe Records w/ Music by The Orb
Believe it or not, the SAME label that released the "War of the Worlds" LP I played last month (which had nothing to do with the HG Wells tale) also released this OTHER "War of the Worlds" record. I only have the Test Pressing of it. Intermission music included by The Orb.

This story is... for kids? It's sounds like an X Minus One story.

Mr Fab:

So HG Wells invented the alien-invasion story? Or was it just the first famous one
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Mr Fab @8:15
I think he's pretty early on, if not one of the first. But something tells me there was probably one or two before him that are not as well known. (Or, more likely, not as good.)

Edgar Rice Burroughs was nearly a contemporary (Welles was a little older) and Burroughs had a lot of stuff about aliens and Martians and whatnot, but I can't put to mind an INVASION story. Verne wrote about US invading the Moon, so that's sort of the opposite.
Avatar 8:19pm
BC Sterrett:

I wonder which tale came first, this one or his tale of "First Men in the Moon" where humans are the alien invaders.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
Austin Rich:

"First Men in the Moon" was a few years later. War of the Worlds was first.

I am convinced that if they did a modern radio drama like this the background music would fly The Art of Noise and the Residents
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
Austin Rich:

Though I think Verne's novel about invading the moon pre-dates all of it, who died around the time Welles was really getting a head of steam about sci-fi.

I like story albums, as they are often sort of weird, and good for radio. I like Disney albums, as they are often over-designed and over-produced in the best way.
